Oh, the memories.
I used to not be a lazy alcoholic. Okay, I used to just not be lazy.
My friend Jenn and I used to stock up on the organic apples my mom used to buy, and bike the trails after school.
My cousin Ken and I used to cross country ski the trail in the winter.
My friend Jess (Okay, not Jessica R, but yes, another High School friend of the same first name, last initial) and I  used to ditch school (we HATED our seventh period class) and go sit at the "waterfall'. Then we'd get ripped and try to climb it.
My old boyfriend Krist and I used to fill water bottles with vodka and hike the trail.

If you get a little off the beaten path, there is a teensy tiny little cemetery that is good for exploring.

Wow. I guess I used to be more active than I thought. That probably explains why my ass was 95 lbs. back then.

Oh, and what Jessica R. said.

I smoked a lot of good bud here when I was a kid.  Good times.

Great place to trail run and nature walk. Not too far from Chicago. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of complete peace and quiet. You can hear the distant buzzing of machinery or something from the central core that is Argonne. It's a bit weird to be in a forest preserve that surrounds an energy laboratory. Se la vie, I'll take what I can get as far as places to trail run in the Chicagoland area.

Awesome biking trails here at Waterfall Glen!  This forest preserve is beautifully kept, on the grounds of Argonne Lab (my hubby kept joking that the well water he drank powered him up with extra nuclear energy).  The terrain is pretty hilly, and thus presents a good challenge for bikers and runners alike; the trails are for the most part nicely paved and fairly wide, and shade is provided by nice large trees and foliage interspersed throughout the area.   The trail itself is a nine mile loop, easy to follow and not too crowded with too much traffic.  We are training for a 3 day bike charity event and did this loop twice today, which is normally not a lot of mileage for us; but the amount of hills and valleys challenged us and caused my ass to really feel it!

Living in the Chicago area and training for the marathon?  I highly recommend coming here for your long runs.

There's enough variety, both in terms of hills and flats, as well as environment (marsh to prairie to forest back to marsh again) to keep you interested.

It's a beautiful place and while I hated my shorter runs during my training, I loved my long runs once I started coming here.  Whether I was running alone and soaking it all in, or running  in a group and sharing the experience I'll always have fond memories of this place.

As a tip, you'll need to carry your own water with you because there really aren't any places to take a sip.

I agree with the above reviews, although I'd be a little hesitant to use this terrain too much during my Marathon training as the hills and valleys present themselves so often that your odds for injury rise accordingly.  However, I do use it occasionally to break up my routine and truly enjoy it's beauty.  Try it for yourself.  One bit of advice...if you go in the early evening during the summer, wear glasses as very large flying insects tend to dive-bomb as you run in certain areas.  Or maybe they only do that to me (lol).

Beautiful preserve, where we went on a class field trip. Its a perfect hiking spot, and its quite relaxing.  If you are in the mood for a great hiking/biking/running experience, definitely check out Waterfall Glen

This is a great place to go running and biking.  The trails are really well kept and the atmosphere is amazing.  Its far enough outside of Chicago that you can finally feel like your in the country.  They conduct a great race here each year in the late summer called the Waterfall Glen Xtreme 10.  Definately check this place out to get some fresh air and/or exercise.
