My husband and I love VR. We had never rock climbed until we walked in the door this past June and since then we have been hooked. It's very family-friendly, we climb with our son who just turned 5 two weeks ago and we also sneak over occasionally to climb with just the 2 of us. They keep things fresh by updating the walls often. The staff is friendly and very helpful. We now not only have a family membership but we all own our own gear since we go there so often. Highly recommend!

Our little one has developed a love for climbing things (even stuff she shouldn't) so for my birthday I decided why not take her to a climbing gym for the hell of it and see if she likes it.
Our daughter had a great time! The front desk staff was really friendly and good with kids. I hadn't climbed in a couple years, but they were understanding and passed me on the belay check even though I needed to be reminded about a couple things (once I remembered, it clicked). They were chill about me belaying our daughter (who's about to turn 2), and my wife helping her climb by taking some weight off. Overall, very nice staff with common sense and good heart.
The gym is really good, especially for Manassas area. From what I could see, they had a big toprope climbing area, a big sport climbing area with overhead climbs (used to love them when I was younger) and a big bouldering area. It's almost as big as something like Earth Treks, but the customer service is way better here.
I don't climb often anymore, but whenever my daughter wants to climb again, we'll be back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nargess G.Fairfax, VA042Aug 2, 2023

We just hosted a birthday party for our 7 year old daughter here. It was amazing! Many of the kids had never been climbing, but the staff was so supportive and patient with them. They explained everything in order for the kids to be successful and everyone had a great time. Everything ran smoothly. All of the staff was helpful and responsive. It was easy to order pizza and have it delivered and the party room area had ample space for the kids to refuel after they got a lot of climbing in. I am so glad we went with Vertical Rock for the party. It was worth the money spent!

The facility is great but can I just say...the staff is PHENOMENAL!!! Elijah helped my three young kids climb and he was incredible with them. My son was so scared to climb to the top of the blue wall and Elijah coached him through and helped him one step at a time without making him feel pressured! My son was ecstatic and so proud when he completed it! He was absolutely glowing! I knew this was going to be a great adventure with the kids, but Elijah made it perfect! We couldn't have asked for more!!! Way to go Vertical Rock!

They were patient with my autistic daughter. They were knowledgeable and I will definitely return for more lessons and practice in rock climbing.

Recently the music (and perhaps staff) have taken a nose dive. The music has been offensive, head banging screaming heavy metal type music and it is loud. Apparent.y, the staff on duty determine the type genre of music and volume - and customers need to grin and bear it. I have raised my concerns several times - things calm down for a few days - then back at it. Most climbers are there for the climbing and social aspect - hard to converse with music blaring. When the music is blaring the climbers are raising their voices at each other to be heard. The other day at VR Manassas there was pleasant music - I commented to the lady at the desk - she said she picks play lists that she thinks most people will enjoy - funny thing is I think she is new and gets that customers are looking for a pleasant experience - give her a raise! There are however, some staff members that don't give a crap about what customers want but more about what they want and at the volume they want. At the desk in Tyson's a couple weeks back a lady customer was at the counter trying to converse with the staff - there was difficulty due to the volume of music - I asked the music to be turned down, it was, the lady customer at the desk said thank you to me. The routes - good - the gym (Manassas and Tyson's) good - some of the staff are not functioning as if the gym and customers are the first concern, the music is still sketchy at times and the volume is almost always too loud - it's as if the music was the main event instead of being background music for climbing... maybe it's time for some "no music" days... this might encourage staff to perform associated duties / tasks such as checking the restrooms for paper products, damp mopping the floor or crash pads, emptying waste baskets, etc...
Maybe start hiring staff that excel at customer service - climbing experience not needed.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 7, 2022Previous reviewBest climbing gym in Norther Virginia.
The other climbing gyms in the greater Washington D.C. area are crap in comparison to Vertical Rock. Some may be larger, have taller walls, or more staff, but the overall quality of the other climbing gyms just doesn't compare well to VR.
The staff at VR are super friendly and knowledgeable. And the climbers at VR are friendly and inviting. No matter your experience level the VR climbing experience is awesome. Can't wait for VR at Tysons to open. - MyNameIsNot B.VA, VA01Jul 6, 2022
Overall the gym is small. Front desk is friendly and I enjoyed the setting by Shane. They don't set very often and some of the routes are still the same when I go in 2-3 months later. Things are sketchy like there are screws just laying around in the bouldering area. I assume they are left by whoever is putting the rocks up. I would watch your children to make sure that their landing space is screw free. There also doesn't seem to be any people walking around and making sure everything is safe or people are tying in correctly. The girls bathrooms have locks that do not work and have not worked since I started climbing there. So be prepared to put your foot on the door to stop anyone from intruding. But the climbers are friendly and the workers are always cleaning.

I am absolutely appalled. I was visiting town for about two months and signed up for a month-to-month membership, and was told that I could cancel at any time (and indeed if you go to the website, they heavily advertise that you can "cancel anytime"). After emailing that I want to cancel my membership, I received an email stating that they require 30 days notice to cancel month-to-month memberships and would be charging me for an additional month after I left town!!!! That's an extra $100, during the economic crisis that is covid. I would have effectively had to cancel my membership the same month that I started my membership in order to not be charged the additional month. This is NOT okay; the climbing community deserves a better quality community environment.
Note that Earth Treks---the next closest gym that's probably 3x the size of Vertical Rock at the same price---does not require a 30 days cancellation fee. Support a gym that supports you.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Eric B.Manassas, VA676121Mar 10, 2020Updated review
We opted to join as members and have found this to be a really fun place to hang out as a family. The staff is super knowledge, supportive, and friendly. The kiddos are getting in a good workout while building confidence. Love the community they've built and look forward to coming lots more!
