Uncle Tai's is a well established Chinese restaurant located in Boca Raton. The weather was nice and we sat outside to enjoy our lunch. They have lunch menu on the weekend as well. We ended up ordering from the dinner as well since lunch didn't have fish option.
We ordered shrimp dumplings steamed, these were really good and I would order this against. The hot and spicy shrimp entree was just ok, it had a tangy sweet and spicy taste instead. The fried rice were good since they were not very oily like other Chinese restaurants. (But they don't cook them in soy sauce, so if you want that, then ask the server while you order). The sliced fish in Szechuan sauce was really good and flavorful.
I like this restaurant and the quick/efficient service. Good place to eat Chinese food if your looking for a proper sit down sort of place instead of Chinese pick up. ~Helpful 20Thanks 0Love this 16Oh no 0 - May 16, 2018
I wish I would have noticed Geoffrey K's review before stopping here, but I missed it.
Initially we wanted to eat at a different restaurant in the mall, but due to the heavy downpour, their outdoor tables were soaked and inside was cramped. With limited options in the mall, we decided to stop here. Should have heeded the reviews and the largely empty tables during a relatively busy time at other spots.
Service: Negative stars are not an option, but in all my reviews and visits to restaurants as an adult: this place ranks pretty much at the very bottom. Impossible to find a server. When one does show up, its with such poor attitude that you feel like they don't want you as a customer. It is the most insane treatment and attitude to have as a restaurant. Orders for brown rice: ignored. Request for salt and pepper: ignored.
Food: Maybe one can overcome rude and bad service if food was out of this world. But even that's not the case here. First of all, the menu is nothing special and even leaves out many popular asian dishes. The prices are way over the top for the quantity and quality presented. $22 for beef entries and $19 for most chicken entrees. Are you kidding me? Again if you are serving high quality ingredients, maybe, but that's not the case here. Throw in the fact that one meal arrived cold and it becomes a bad experience. The only item that was ok was the Hot and Sour soup, but then again I have comparable ones from a cheap buffet.
Overall: Dropping $100 on a meal for two and walking away "MAD" is not a pleasant experience. Traveling for business is not a glamorous life, so after a long day at work, its nice to have a decent meal and a beer. This place took that away from us. We would have been better off finding a Panda Express: better food! I am sure at some point this place was hitting all the notes, but seems that the owners just don't care anymore. My coworker didn't eat most of her meal and told the waiter it was bad. No one bothered to stop by to ask why and even attempt to remedy the situation. We will be staying in the area for a while on a project and this place missed the chance for quite a bit of repeat business.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sam M.Boynton Beach, FL1175466471Jan 11, 2018
Uncle Tai's is located in the Boca town center right next to Rocco Tacos and Brio, both of which are my favorites on Military Trail. The restaurant is nicely decorated compared to usual Chinese places and offers excellent cuisine with excellent service.
I have been to Uncle Tai's only for lunch and usually order from the Lunch menu but browsing through the dinner menu the prices are pretty reasonable for the quality of the food served.
My favorites are the Hot and Spicy Shrimp and the Garlic Shrimp, which i usually order with the Shrimp Fried Rice.
The staff is very hospitable and they are always looking to accommodate the customers. Once we had an office meeting and showed up without a reservations and they got a table of 12 setup without any hesitation.
The food and overall service is awesome. 4 stars but I have to go to Uncle Tai's for dinner one night.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Jason P.Coral Springs, FL77683815476Dec 29, 2017
This is old school Chinese American cuisine for snowbirds seeking boilerplate stuff like they remember from the old NYC neighborhood in the 1970s. It's a farce. This is not the Uncle Tai you remember. Move on. He left you for Houston in 1979. These are his descendants looking for a money grab.
There is nothing Hunanese about it despite the marketing verbiage. There's nothing wrong with Chinese-Am (which I love) but my god, is this place incredibly overpriced for dinner -- and being in this high-end mall with valet parking is no excuse for gouging patrons considering the prices at the other restaurants here are more or less reasonable.
I've had lunch here and it is ok. Nothing authentically Chinese on the menu, which is fine given the target demographic, but I can find equally good or better Chinese-Am for a lot less elsewhere.
Worst of all they do not permit diners to eat at the bar (singles, couples, in threesomes, whatever) which is what I found out tonight. That's a stupid business practice considering we are more likely to order drinks there than at a table as a single. Who the hell wants to eat at a table by themselves? I was told I could have a two top in the dining room if I waited 30 minutes. Crazy. I wasn't doing that when other couples were waiting. Didn't want beef in black bean sauce with a wonton soup that badly.
I walked out and ate at Sushi Ray next door. At the bar, where they were happy to serve me, as a single diner, and I ordered an expensive sake in addition to my dinner.
How do you say go shove it up your ass in Cantonese? Never coming here again.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Nov 27, 2017Updated review
Food Decent
Price High Average
Service Terrible!.... we had the most rude and condescending server who took our order ..... I guess his tuxedo bow was too tight and cut off the polite part of his brain! Rest of the servers were OK!
This is such a beautiful restaurant and it's a pity that some of the staff is so ill mannered! When one spends so much money eating out the least one expects is polite service!
I was so hoping to give a better review this time than my previous visit but things have not changed... sigh!
MANAGEMENT NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Aug 7, 2014Previous reviewInvited here last month with some friends and have been here before and had a pleasant meal.
We reserved a table for 6 one week in advance but upon arriving were placed on a cramped table for 5 and they were going to place a 6 th seat there. I looked around and there were lots of empty tables as it was 9 pm on a week day and seeing the table for 6 was open I decided to sit there to which the hostess became very persistent that it was a table reserved for a party of 8! Total BS!!
The meal was decent as it had been in the past, though the earlier encounter lent a bad taste to the entire meal.
WHEN WILL MANAGEMENT REALIZE THAT IT DOES NOT PAY TO ANTAGONIZE YOUR PATRONS...... hence the 2 stars!
(We left as the joint closed and noticed at NO TIME DID A PARTY OF 8 enter after we did)
We may be back if the Management acknowledges this review! - Jul 1, 2017
When my mother in law insisted we go to Uncle Tai's we were a little leary due to Yelp reviews.
We were a party of five. We ordered wonton soup and egg rolls, both very good. Noodles served in usual Chinese restaurants are not served here. Then we ordered a spicy beef dish which everyone loved. The broccoli however was uncooked. Next we had a crispy whole red snapper which was amazing and delicious. Brown rice was ordered separately as was string beans. The fish was enough for three people.
We were told they have Early Bird Specials if you come earlier.
All in all the food was great as was the service.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 60810577Oct 29, 2016
We arrived and expected a crowd, it was the eve of Halloween, and the rain put a damper on the evening celebrations.
My mom raved and warned the prices were a bit steep but the food was exceptional. Coming from New York City I expected much different pallet here in Florida. But I wasn't disappointed. The hot and sour soup was flavorful and aromatic.
Next came the chicken with black bean sauce and the spicy shredded pork and vegetables. The chicken was the stronger of the two. The pork was a bit plain.
Then the bill; over $50 for the 2 dishes and soup. We left satisfied and full. A nice meal overall but a little expensive.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Evan G.Newport Beach, CA03Dec 25, 2017
We have been customers here for the last ten years and these past 4 years have gotten worse and worse. We had to wait over 2 hours for our food tonight. When we asked about the wait the owner told us firstly that we had not been waiting as long as we had. And then told us we should leave if we want. At that moment our food came out.
The beef was burnt to a crisp, the chicken dry, the only good thing we ate was the white rice. We will never be coming back here and would advise our friends to stay awayHelpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 12, 2016
Over the past 20 years our Asian food tastes evolved from Chinese to Thai and Sushi. Been years since I have been here. Invited for lunch by a friend who frequently dines here due to proximity to his office.
The ambiance for a business lunch is wonderful. Quiet and refined. Beautiful table setting. I must agree with another Yelper that the staff is a bit cold. No real interaction.
We ordered off the lunch menu. Tried the crispy beef and the ducked with plum sauce. Came with soup or salad. The tofu vege soup was delicious. The duck was also very good. Difficult to eat the beef with chop sticks because there was some grizzle that had to be cut by a knife. Certainly delicious.
Sticker shock for a luncheon menu. Upper teens for entrees.
I would say if you have a desire for Chinese food in a beautiful setting this may be the place for you.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
