Our dear Tom's Tavern is closing tomorrow, and has been super-crowded with long waiting lines for days now.
People are enjoying Tom's grilled/not fried burgers, and healthier fried chicken (cooked in canola oil) and indescribably yummy onion rings, and everything else they've enjoyed over the years--one last time (or two).
I decided to go for a last visit to Tom's yesterday night, with an old friend. They had run out of quite a few of the special comfort foods Tom's is known for, but reassured us they would have more tomorrow. They had not anticipated the huge crowds.
So, basically, one more regular, historied, non-yuppie restaurant in Boulder is going away.
It's been a successful restaurant all along, but after owner Tom Eldridge died recently, the family worked very hard to keep it going and decided after much consideration to close.
The family owns the building, it's in a prime location, the sky's the limit, I suppose.
A fond farewell to Tom's, a restaurant/bar that has been very good at what it does.

This place actually cracked me up.
The outside facade gives the impression of a cool 50's style diner. The inside looks like a bomb went off in a Denny's and they never bothered with repairs.
Waitresses looked dirty, as did the entire restaurant including the floor and bar area.
I did not eat, but the food actually looked pretty good. Supposedly this place gets voted the best burger in Boulder frequently.
If you are looking for a place that is dramatically different from the bougie Pearl Street norm, check out Tom's Tavern.
