I always want everything I see in here. What really made me enjoy Therapy is the woman who was working. She was such a funny and welcoming person and was so helpful in chatting through some of the quirky things that I stopped to look at. I ended up leaving with a cute Jonathan Van Ness sticker for my water bottle, and incense lol. I'd come back just to find more random things, support the shop in my neighborhood, and chat with the fun staff!

Pros: I love their whimsical furniture and knick knacks. This is my go-to store for gifts for friends or random fun pick-me-up items for me (I mean, it's called retail Therapy for a reason!). Great location on MacArthur.
Cons: The last two times I've tried to go there the store has been closed with a sign saying they were away for lunch. Including at 4pm when they were scheduled to close at 5. The guy that works there appears slightly moody sometimes, outright unfriendly other times, and sweet as a summer peach others. It's odd.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 4811797230Oct 6, 2016
Love this store! I always go to the one in Alameda when I'm catching a movie. Despite lower prices on Amazon, I try to support the local businesses. It's got a great collection of things to look at, inspire creativity and buy as perfect gifts.
I came here at 1:30 the other day - middle of the day but they were closed. Closed for an hour for lunch which was frustrating because I made the trip to pick up some presents and just didn't have the time (or inclination) to come back again. I don't expect a store like this to be closed in the middle of the day.
Also - lame side note, last time I bought 2-3 cute notebooks here ... but their price stickers are so strong that when I went to peel off the price sticker (which you do before giving a gift), it totally ripped up the paper notebook. Ruined the cute design and messed up an otherwise thoughtful gift. At this rate, I will stick to the one in Alameda which is a shame b/c I was SO HAPPY when they opened this location.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aiyoyo N.San Francisco, CA610Jul 31, 2019
Tucked between many nail saloons and spas, you'll stumbled into Therapy! A fun unique gift and home store with unique gifts as well as vintage wall deco signs and furniture. You might walked in just to get that one special birthday card but always walked out with their store's orange shopping bag that everyone adores!
Since this is the only such store on the strip, people enjoys coming in, whether sitting on the couches while waiting for their numbers to be call ( from the diner next door ) or kids enjoying with chalk drawing in the floor!
All I have to say is a place for everyone yeah including dogs! Very dog friendly place!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Terrance B.Oakland, CA03Oct 8, 2020
I went to the store on 10/8/2020 to purchase a candle because I realized the store had re-opened and wanted to support my local neighborhood merchant. I love the store and my wife, and I have purchased many items from the store in the past. When I walked in, there was a heavy set, Hispanic woman working at the front counter. At the front door, there was a sanitizer machine with a sign stating, "Please use sanitizer", however I had already sanitized before I entered the store. However, the woman at the counter stated, there is a sanitizer at the front door, reminding me to use the sanitizer. I thought it was unnecessary but in an abundance of caution I went back and re-sanitized my hands.
When I went to the counter to make my purchase, I made the mistake of using cash for my transaction. The salesclerk acted like she was completely put off that I was not using debit or credit card. So, I simply stated, maybe you should have a sign requesting that customers pay only with debit or credit cards and requiring that they sanitize their hands before entering the store. In response, the salesperson stated, "I AM SORRY THAT IS NOT COMMONSENSE TO YOU".
At that point, I immediately cancelled my transaction and left the store. Before leaving, I asked to speak with the manager, but the salesclerk told me she was the manager. Although, I recognize the stress many small businesses are facing this is no time to treat your customers rudely especially considering I was the only person in the store. Needless, to say I will not be returning to the store.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 16, 2016
I'm pretty happy to see Therapy branching out - loved the store on Valencia for ages and the new one in my new neighborhood is pretty well stocked. Friendly staff, lots of cute merchandise - all a bit pricey. There are some bargains there - and the buyer has a distinct sense of style and humor that is very appealing.
Somehow I managed to walk out with a $35 wall clock when I was just going to Farmer Joe's for onions!
As this is located in a transitional neighborhood - do not leave things in your parked car that might tempt someone to break a window (that happens a lot here) and don't walk down the street gabbing on your cell phone and oblivious.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Karen T.Oakland, CA106601Jan 25, 2018
They have cool quirky things in this store, but I do have to agree with another reviewer about the prices. The prices are pretty high for things you can get way cheaper on Amazon or the even the flea market. Good place to go if you're in need for a last minute present though.
But that's not the reason why I'm giving this location only 1 star. As I walked in the person working did not greet or acknowledge me at all until I got to the register, and even then she wasn't the friendliest. It felt like a sort of "hurry up and go" type of situation. When I asked about an item near the register I was given short responses like she didn't want to be bothered. The messed up part is that when people came in after me they were greeted with a smile and had their questions answered with no hesitation.
Sad days when this is the place you grew up and you get treated like you don't belong. I won't bring race into the mix, but, well *shrugs*. Gentrification, right?Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Deena D.Oakland, CA4948267Jan 16, 2017
This is one of my favorite stores in the bay area! I have known the owners for about 25 years, since they first opened a used furniture shop on 16th St. in San Francisco. They used to find furniture for the salon I used to work at and so when I opened up my own shop, I worked with them also.
I had an apartment fire once, and the owners gave me a very generous gift certificate to help furnish some of the things that I had lost. They were also very helpful in giving me advice on running my business!
They are incredibly hard-working people, and are very community minded. I'm so happy that they have decided to have such a large presence in the Laurel district! It's such a great neighborhood and they're a perfect fit!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jennifer P.San Francisco, CA02Oct 10, 2020
I visited this location yesterday (10/9) and I absolutely loved my experience! It was my first time visiting Therapy Stores in Oakland, I always went to the SF location but this one is definitely one to visit! It has a mix of antiques and products, as well as, plants!!! Plus the music was great! Also, the saleswoman Janell was very helpful and kind, she took the time to ask how I was coping during these hard times and suggested a few items that might help! Definitely coming back for Christmas gifts!! :)

I visit Therapy each time I'm in the Oakland area, even if it's just to look at things. I usually get some candles and cards for birthdays and the holidays. They have a wide range of baby, infant gifts and some clothes (think baby onsies), lots of local/semi local cards, stationary items, kitschy SF themed gifts, and their rustic/upcycled furniture is so neat even though I am too poor to get my hands on it. Every time I have stopped in, I have been greeted and talked to as though I'm a part of the community and not just a number. Just got the birthday cake caramels and they are just not my thing. Favorite item is the apothecary candle that is like a citrus scent.
