Q:
This came up for "heavy metal bars in NJ" is that accurate? Or am I just going to see hear pop music in there?
A:
Daytime has more of a rock music type of feel however they do have TouchTunes jukebox where you could play music
Keegan J.27 days agoQ:
Whats the seating like? For eating? I didn't see seating do you eat the bar?
A:
Hello! Most people eat at the bar, but there are a few high tables around the pool table in the back where you can sit wherever it's empty. I'm the warm weather I'm sure they set up seating outside too.

I've been there well over 2 dozen times. Mostly, on Sunday to watch a game & hang out with some good friends. I've NEVER had a bad bite or a warm beer. Great barkeeps, friendly patrons. If you wanna' shoot the bull to folks round the bar, have at it. You won't be disappointed stopping in for a burger, seafood bowl (on Sundays) or one of the many different specials. It does get a bit loud & hectic later in the evening. Fun time, great food.

This place was packed! I had a beer and left cause it was standing room only. Nice crowd though!

Dec 22, 2018Previous reviewWow what a bar! This is a true dive bar, but a great one. The food was good! I had the wings and they were delicious, I also tried the chicken parm sliders and they were also good, especially the fries which were crunchy. You can see my after picture attached so you can see what I thought of them.
The bartenders were beautiful people, awesome, friendly, and entertaining. They have a bouncer in the bar that is excellent, the guy is on everything going on at the bar. He sits outside the women's bathroom making sure they feel safe going in. If a man nears the women's room he immediately sends them in the right direction. I know, he did it to me, lol. This made my wife feel safe entering the bathroom, which I appreciated very much. He also removed a patron whom clearly had too much to drink and was getting out of hand, but he did so respectfully. This is a well run bar that despite its dive bar status can offer a great time. Great music fills the place all night, and the drinks are well made and inexpensive as well. 3 dollars for green tea shots, that's half what I pay in most bars. The crowd is diverse, with all patrons all having a good time together, just the way I like it. This is a good bar, I will definitely be back. - Oct 29, 2023
This bar gets five stars because it's the place to be no matter how long the line is no matter how many ppl are smoking up stuff. They will card you even if you have white hair a walking cane and one tooth left. Ppl party here till 3am and continue the party in the walgreen parking lot.
Never tried the food but the ppl outside and inside are the nicest ever. It does look super sketchy tho. Don't take your mom or baby here.
They have a huge round bar, some games at the back. It's tiny. Summer time there's a patio beside the loud train station choo choo grab a drink while u wait for your train to the cityHelpful 3Thanks 2Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jun 25, 2023
Such fun. Love coming here. Casual. Local. Friendliest bartenders. Played pool. Good food. Served nice and hot. Love the house cut fries. This time we had the ends so they weren't as good. The chopped salad was so good. I took some home because it was a huge portion. I will definitely be back.

Place has a juke box and the use of it is popular. You'd be lucky to have your songs played but usually good music is played anyway. Bartenders are for the most part friendly. It looks a little shady at night but everyone was well behaved plus they have a bouncer for just in case. Drinks are incredibly inexpensive which I believe why it's so popular not including the food which looks delicious but never tried it so can't comment on it but based on looks I'd say yummy looking. It's a dive bar that sells food and inexpensive drinks. If you like that come here.

17: number of minutes spent inside the Straphanger
14: number of minutes standing at the bar, cash in hand, waiting (before giving up and leaving altogether)
4: number of people that closed their tabs while I was waiting
3: number of people who approached the bar AFTER me, and were quickly waited on
0: number of times anyone acknowledged my presence
Bar back said they were "changing shifts" so don't come here at 6pm, cuz they can't even acknowledge you while they're changing shifts.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 3 - Jul 19, 2021
Ok, so it doesn't get much better than this on a Sunday funday. Seafood special for crab legs & fresh oysters, steamed clams & even shrimp po boy... what? Come on, we are in Bergen County where you can't even get a decent piece of steak for unde $40. With not much expectation, ordered the crab legs platter with mussels, potatoes and corn for $18.99. Wow, portions are super generous and crab legs were fresh & tasty.
Bartenders & workers are friendly and we met some random patrons who became first name basis by the time we were leaving the bar. They serve local brew on tap and also have Sunday bloody Mary specials for $6. If you are in the mood for some deliciousness, here's a dive bar that offers a lot more than just loud music.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Janice H.Bogota, NJ02513Dec 30, 2022Updated review
Updating to say how fabulous this place is. Chillest atmosphere you can imagine. Love the inexpensive drinks & food. Happy Hour draft beer prices are hard to beat: $2 Domestic Pints & $4 Craft.

Dining out in the age of COVID is a bit risky, but they do so much here to protect the employees & customers. Digital temp is taken with a forehead scan. They scan your driver's license. (Scanner plays Happy Birthday chimes if it's your Bday. LOL!) This is done for ID verification, but also, if there were an outbreak of virus, you could be contacted to get tested. Masks must be worn when you are not at your table. And you will be at a table. It will be set near & perpendicular to the bar since NJ's latest restrictions on bars bans face-to-face staff & customers at a bar. This is good cuz then you are breathing among your own group.
Food is always great. We are big fans of the Friday Flank Steak Special, but burgers, grilled chicken sandwich & wings with spicy garlic sauce are our other favorite dishes. Free meter parking now thru Christmas Eve in Hackensack. Love this place & its workers. All are wonderful.Aug 25, 2020Previous reviewI think gritty would be a good word to describe the decor of this place known as NJ's best dive bar. The crowd here place is one of the most eclectic I've seen anywhere. Young & old, different walks of life & all shades. Everyone is chill. The atmosphere is fun & upbeat & that emanates from the delightful staff. All of them are super nice, helpful & friendly, a bunch of great kids in this mature lady's eyes. The staff is definitely an asset in this establishment.
All the food we have tried is very good. Wings, steak sandwich, chicken sliders, fries. Our favorite item is the Flank Steak special on Friday night. Fabulous! A decent size flank steak for 1, it's always juicy & delicious. It comes out on sizzling stone in a wooden holder. The steak & the accompanying basket of fresh French fries are topped with a delicious homemade chimichurri sauce that's fresh & fantastic. The meal is a great value at $7.95.
Just gotta say--this is a bar, not a restaurant. You do get real silverware, but paper plates & napkins. There are a few high top tables for 2 or 3. Most people just eat at the bar. I usually drink beer when we go & so does my husband. We sometimes add a couple of shots. Fireball, Jaegar & Green Tea (Jameson, sour mix & peach schnapps) are $3 all the time. All beers are $3 for Power Hour 7:00-8:00 including some decent craft beer bottles.
Happy Hour is Monday thru Friday 4:00-6:00. A nice, friendly, reasonably priced place to go for drinks & freshly prepared food. This is disappointing, because I've been a big fan for years, had previously given them a 5-star review, and had listed this among my 70 favorite bars (consisting mostly of dive bars) in the general area. Guess that list is down to 69 now. Here's the thing. They still have very good wings and even better burgers. They still have decent drink selection. But I come here because I'm a big fan of that classic dive bar look and vibe. I came here once with a friend and the bartender was giving us an attitude for no particular reason. I understand if someone is having a bad day, but we did nothing to her. Heck, I went to work the day after my mother's funeral and didn't give anyone an attitude. Yesterday I had two friends with me, one visiting from another country who happens to love burgers, so The Strap seemed like a great burger & beer combo choice. To be honest, the only better tasting burger I know in the area is Steve's Burgers on 46 in Garfield, but Steve's isn't a bar (plus Steve's burgers aren't nearly as big, and they're inconveniently cash-only, so The Strap made perfect sense. Well, we showed up and the bouncer immediately told us that there's only outside seating left. We said not a problem. He then said that we all had to show our IDs. We explained to him that two of us have our IDs, but one of us is visiting from another country and didn't think to take along passport for this, and we are all in our mid-40s and clearly couldn't fake being under 21 even if we had the help of a top Hollywood makeup artist. So a bouncer with an attitude informed us that we were not even permitted to sit at outside seating, three people in our mid-forties two of whom did have their ID's, because the third one of us visiting from another country didn't bring a passport? What did we do? We went to another bar where it was clearly no issue. And what are we going to do next time we want to go in a beer? We will be going to another bar, where it is clearly no issue. That was strike 2 for The Strap, but enough to make it strike 3. The competition is too steep to put up with such nonsense. There are better options than this, folks. I'll be throwing away my Straphanger t-shirt and not going back. My friend who also used to enjoy going here when in the area said the same. Done, not coming back. Check my stats, I don't leave a lot of negatives, but when I see reason to, I serve my community by letting them know why in my reviews. Still three stars because like I said, still good food and decor. But especially at prices that never stood out as quite the deal, why go back for the attitude when there are so many other great options?
Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1Apr 14, 2018Previous reviewLove the vibe, good friendly and attentive service, some very good options among the drinks, truly AMAZING tasting burgers (could have a lil' more meat though, but portions are generous with a good side of fries - you definitely get your money's worth and then some), and good prices. Plus they have pool and darts. This is a great spot. Go and enjoy! :)
