Another fine DineLA restaurant! I have lunch here with three of my closest friends and it was pretty damn good! The ambiance was nice, the view was spectacular, the food was good, for lunch. My only complaint is that they have these ventilation tubes on the ceiling that were unsightly compared to the rest of the decor and the beautiful ocean view. Valet parking was cheaper than surrounding parking so definitely a plus!

Now to the food:

We started off with a huge appetizer of fried calamari. Yes it was delicious but they gave such a large portion that we began feeling sick. We obviously did not want to waste food but the amount was a bit overwhelming to finish.

I had the Sake Marinated Hawaiian Mahi Mahi - Sticky brown rice, almond, shiitake & scallion rice, chili green beans & house teriyaki for the main course. The Mahi Mahi was delicious and tender. Absolutely loved the shiitake mushrooms, but then again, I've always had a soft spot for them. The rice was ok, a bit overwhelming once again and slightly dry.

The dessert was definitely the best part. I had the Toasted Macadamia Financier - Carmelized pineapple, rum sabayon & vanilla ice cream. I could barely taste the macadamia which was perfectly fine, I only like them in small amounts. The financier was so rich and moist. The ice cream and bits of strawberries blackberries made it perfection. The caramelized pineapple was also very sweet and unique.

Definitely would come back, probably for dinner next time.

LOCATION = A+

VIEW = A+++

FOOD = A+ (I had the steak and crabcakes and they were well seasoned and delicious).

SERVICE = So-so

PRICE = YES - VERY!

Did I mention the view? fantastic - especially as the sun sets and the Amusement rides light up - just beautiful.

Would definitely go back - for the steak (not a big seafood fan).

This is a classy place - not sure why they let me in. Guess the doorman was on break.

Greg Grunberg came in and my wife just about attacked him. She ran up and immediately started discussing old Felicity plot lines with him. He was a total class act and was a super nice guy. I, on the other hand, was mortified and tried to hide behind my friends. Damn it. Lost whatever happening vibe I had when my wife bailed and started starfucking dear 'ol Greg. Less then five minutes in the restaurant. Might be a new record. ughh. Fuck it dude, lets get the lobster.

So lobster it was. got the 1.5 pound steamed American. absolutely delicious, I drenched it in butter. roasted potatoes and asparagus - not so much. but I was not there for the sides, I was there for the lobster and it did not disappoint. calamari was also nice and tender, but the marinara sauce was kinda blah.

too rich for my blood on a regular basis, but nice for special occasions. overall, lobster good, sides bad. atmosphere good, prices bad. Grunberg good, wife bad.

Had dinner here last weekend with five others and had a great experience! Valet parking was easy once I discovered the restaurant was on the street end of the pier, not the other end!

We had a reservation although our entire party didn't arrive until a few minutes past our time. Maitre'd showed us to the upstairs bar where we sat outside and had a cocktail before dinner. Attentive and cute cocktail waitress at the bar.

Our table inside had a fun view of the pier with the ferris wheel all lit up against the night sky. Server was informative about each of the dishes and gave us plenty of time to order without pushing us even though they were obviously busy.

I had the lobster of course and it was prepared perfectly - not overcooked so it's dry, but just enough so that it melts in your mouth. I also had the organic baby greens salad which was perfectly displayed and not drenched in dressing. Ok, for the record, I technically asked for dressing on the side and maybe he didn't hear me, but the dressing wasn't too much like I find in lot of other establishments. A bottle of wine to go with it and I was in lobster heaven!

Bill for six people including tip came to $300. I think someone just ordered an appetizer for their entree and I split the lobster with someone else, so there was a total of four entrees ordered.

Excellent, friendly service. Our server commented that he thought his wife was the perfect woman until he saw me checking the college football scores on my phone. I was trying to do it on the sly but he busted me out!

Overall, great restaurant!

Waiter: "Excuse me, sir? Will you be ordering dessert?"

Us: "No" ...as we're still finishing up our meal that we ordered not too long ago...

Waiter: "There's actually a time limit on the tables. If you were going to order dessert, then I could have them give you more time." ...and then he walks away....

Granted we did arrive late to our party (which left before we could finish our meal because they were watching Kooza right afterwards), but we freakin' paid for our meal. $80 bucks worth. All we wanted was to finish our meal and then leave. We weren't even going to linger around cuz it was just the two of us left, yet they have the nerve to tell us that there's a time limit. Ugh....never again are we coming back. The food wasn't even that great. Everything was loaded w/ butter and grease. We ordered the crab soup, mahi mahi, and salmon dish....and we tasted a bit of the "complimentary" bread w/ calamari that the others ordered. Trust me, I've had way better food elsewhere. Never comin' back!

The Lobster is one of my favorite restaurants and I would go there more often if my budget allowed. To begin, they have an amazing location with beautiful views of the beach and the pier (especially at night). The inside is a bit modern and is not your typical seafood restaurant (think Joe's Crab Shack or Enterprise Fish Co.), but it still gives you an upscale beachy feel.

I always begin with a glass of Prosecco and the House Made Lemon & Chili Hummus. My favorite entree is the 3 Peppercorn Seared Rare Pacific Yellowfin Tuna. It has so much flavor, but it's not overwhelming. It leaves you feeling satisfied and still light. Let's not forget the Oyster Bay, Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand 2008 too!

I haven't really ventured farther off the menu and being a foodie I know I should. All in all, I always leave this place feeling so happy. On one occasion I left so happy that I decided to continue the night on the Promenade and ended up paying for a $60 cab ride home and $20 to get my car out of Valet the next day. I told you dining at The Lobster can get expensive!

I took my wife there for her birthday. The location is so good next to the pier and we had the susnet top set out mood. It was lovely. I ordered shrimp to start which was very good and a steak for dionner. I thought is was very good. My wife had Lobster which she said was some of the best she's ever had. It is pricey but you get what you pay for.

If you haven't been I recommend taking your date there for a romantic dinner.

Okay so I wasn't too sure on ordering the Lobster Roll or going for the crab cakes or crab enchiladas...but I was like, "This place is called The Lobster, so I should order the lobster!"  Yeah, sometimes I'm the type of person that orders food at a restaurant that's known for something, but I opt for something else and half the time I'm left disappointed.

Our waiter was friendly & knowledgeable.  Wait for our food and order to be taken were okay, we had to wait about 20 minutes to have our order taken though.  The restaurant was very nice and we scored the last window seat (score!!) overlooking the Santa Monica pier.  However, a lot of the tables seemed very close to each other.  We asked our waiter if he could take our picture and to try to get the view in the background and he was knocking into the guy sitting at the next table to do so.

Prices were high, but then again, we're right on the pier and the restaurant was nice too, so it was expected.  My lobster roll ($24) had lots of fresh lobster meat on a nice toasted hot dog bun served with plenty of crispy shoestring fries.  I expected the lobster meat to be mixed with mayo, since I asked the waiter, however, I think if I could have had it naked & with a side of butter that may have been better.  My bf liked his halibut but thought the mushrooms they used were a little overpowering.

All in all, a nice option for a nice lunch or dinner on the pier.

The atmosphere is most definitely not classy. More like an uncomfortable blend of obnoxious tourists and seekers of fine dining that averages out to a cheap, noisy ambiance. The view is hampered and uninteresting.

The John Dory was truly a highlight, making up for a lackluster leafy green salad and a bland bread/dip combo. The service was undeniably poor. My date and I got our drinks at separate times, the sugar packs for the iced tea were old and hardened. The waiter nearly elbowed me three times reaching for the neighboring table. Slow, clumsy, and awkward. Scallops were average, but generally lacking any flavor to write home about.

The real delight was the blackberry cobbler. I'm a sucker for a good cobbler and that's exactly what i got. Plenty of berries, delicious ice cream. This saved the day for an otherwise crummy joint.

Went here with a couple of friends last Friday for dinner, and I  was pleasantly surprised to find the lobster as a dineLA entree option.  Unfortunately, it required a $6 supplement, which was actually fine by me in this case since I was planning to order a lobster anyway and it would've been more expensive without it being on dineLA.  Anyway, here's what I had:

- Tempura king prawn appetizer with spicy mustard dressing and tangy dipping sauce: Five large prawns with a nice tempura breading.  I particularly liked the mustard dressing which gave the prawns a tasty kick.
- Steamed Maine lobster (1.5lb) with asparagus and roasted potatoes: Sweet, tender lobster.  I wanted to devour the whole thing, but after my large prawn appetizer, I actually had one of the claws and virtually all of the asparagus and potatoes to doggie bag!
- Chocolate pannacotta w. dark chocolate ice cream and shortbread cookies: This is heaven for chocolate lovers.  Rich, intense chocolate ice cream on a smooth, creamy panna cotta.  Should've been called "death by chocolate"!  The only downer was the chocolate shortbread cookies which were a bit bland and dry.

I also tried my friend's kanpachi sashimi appetizer and the crab cake entree which are also good.  I am often skeptical of sashimi at non-sushi restaurants, but this kanpachi was super-fresh, sweet, almost buttery.  The crab cakes are also terrific, hearty with real crab meat inside and doesn't have that cheapo "breading flavored with crab" that so many restaurants give you.

Note: The Lobster modifies their menu daily due to what's available, so you might want to call the day you go to see what'll be offered.

This place is right at the foot of the pier.  When you get there at night it seems like it might be an old place that is kinda crappy looking inside.  (Lobster has been around since the 70s).  However, when you walk in there is a gorgeous salt water fish tank with cool fish.  Than you go upstairs and there is a small outside bar section, indoor bar, and the main area.  Even the bathroom is beautiful!!
The food was also DELICIOUS!!  We had oysters.  LOOOOVE oysters.  OMG. Bf and I shared a lobster and crab bisque.  It was super delicious.  The blend of flavors of seafood and bisque was amazing!!  Bf had spiny lobster which he really enjoyed.  I had seafood pasta with lobster, crab, mussels, and shrimp.  It was pretty good if not amazing.  Bf also had their famous bloody mary which he loved.  I loved my mojito. :-)

Overall:  beautiful and delicious.  great place for seafood lovers!!

This place is wonderful!  The atmosphere is quite gorgeous!  It sits next to the pier and has a view of the Pacific Ocean. A great place for date night. I ordered a smal lobster and was pleasantly surprised at the size. It was soooo good!  If you like lobster, you must try this place out. If you don't, try it out anyways just for the view :-)

I could be a very faithful fan.
Clams, crab & shrimp are my downfall.  So is a nice heavy Jack n Coke.  All of the above have been tried here and I have to say that compared to the various fishy places along our sandy coast, this one has been one of the best.
Thanks Trish!  You were an angel.

I am a boston transplant and we were nostalgic and craving lobster because we have yet to have good lobster here on the west coast.  I have fond memories of catching & eating lobster over on Cape Cod as a kid.  Also, it was not trivial to find a place here to make lobster in the traditional way - steamed with drawn butter, not grilled or baked.

Anyway, The Lobster flies their live maine lobsters in daily.  It basically gave me everything I expected.  Delicious fresh steamed lobster with butter & sides.  I thought the price at $24 / lb was very reasonable; 1.5 lbs was plenty (yielding about 6 oz of meat).  Not the sort of thing I'd do regularly, but on a special occasion it hits the spot.  Oh and the salad w/ dungeness crab was also delish.

Well, for the location and view, I would give this place 5 stars but, that would be it.  The tables were so close together that it made getting to and leaving your table quite a task.  The foold was good but, not out of this world.  The service was better than average.

9:45pm dinner after a flight from DC to LA and exactly what we needed! We were wiped out and starving - happy to settle in for a great meal and that it was. Our server was as sweet as could be, the lobster was YUM, a nice bottle of wine, great table and we were in business. Very cool spot right at the tip of the Santa Monica Pier, I imagine the locals are happy to have this as a dinner option and if you're visiting, put it on your 'to-do' list of restaurants to try.

Good place for a romantical dinner because of the view and all. The food was above par. But I expected better for being called "The Lobster". Its also somewhat cram packed with tables, which makes maneuvering around the tables quite awkward. The server was nice and friendly, helped me pick out wine, etc. Would I go back? Eh probably not. They're are better places for your money in town. All in all, a lovely evening though.

A reservation was placed prior to dinner.

The views from the restaurant are excellent; we were fortunate enough to be seated by the window.

Everyone at our table ordered Lobster, for the exception of one -- who ordered the sea bass.

The lobster came with asparagus, potatoes, and butter. This was perhaps the best lobster I have ever had. The texture of the lobster's meat was perfectly prepared. The taste was moist and flavorful; it's freshness... apparent.

I was able to trade a piece of my lobster for the sea bass. The sea bass was not bad. However, I recommend the lobster.

The price of entrées range from about $18 to $26.

The lobster is about $27 per pound

The service was very good. Our waitress was attentive. Further, the staff at the front were extremely friendly.

Additional Notes:

- Parking is available on-site. The valet parking area is below the restaurant.

Great service, food, cocktails, wine and atmosphere.  We arrived a bit early for our reservation on a Saturday night so we found a table in the outside bar and enjoyed a cocktail.  This was a fantastic way to start a terrific meal.  Upon being seated at our table, Paul our waiter gracefully explained the updated menu.  We ordered appetizers and the bisque to start our meal.  Our entrees included the halibut, fillet medallions, and newly in-season spinney lobster.  All three dishes were divine and melted in your mouth!  We completed our meal with the chocolate bread pudding and fruit panna cotta desserts.  Again, this course was to die for!
From the moment we entered the valet parking area to the moment we left the parking lot, we were treated like royalty.  Yes, the tables are a little close and the sound level is a little high at times, but not  very different than a lot of restaurants I've been to.  The view is breathtaking if you are next or close to the window.  The view is the decor in this restaurant.  The unique design of the building only adds to a great dining experience.
On a side note, it was a surprise to see the actor Martin Lawrence and friends come into the restaurant and his decked out Rolls Royce in the valet parking.  You never know who or what you will see at this place.

NOTE: This review is for the bar only.

You know, I was thinking about it this past weekend.  You know that strip of grass on the cliffs on Ocean Ave in Santa Monica right next to the pier?  Well, there's a South Park episode that talks about how Santa Monica treats its homeless population very well.  And I have to agree, to a certain extent.  Why? you might ask.  Here's why.  I'm not saying that any homeless person has it made... far from it.  But that piece of real estate is one of the most desirable around... and yet it's totally swamped with homeless people.  Sun, grass, trees, a view of the ocean?  Sorry boss, I quit... I want a seaside resort as my home!

I digress... as usual...

So for the 4th of July a group of friends and I jumped on our beach cruisers and went bar-hopping from Santa Monica to Venice and back again.  One of our stops was The Lobster.  We didn't have any food, and we only had a few drinks.

So, basically, this review is for the ambiance.  Needless to say, it's fantastic.  A view of the pier and the ocean, and if you are facing north you can see all of the way up to Malibu.  Spectacular.  Espectacularrrr.  Great place for a date and then a romantic walk along the beach.  Awww.

So anyways, I was drinking beer, so nothing to praise there.  4 stars for ambiance.  Maybe some day I'll overpay for the food, but most likely not.

Party of four, last Friday for a late lunch.

Some places you go to are consistently three-star: the food is OK, nothing life-changing. The atmosphere is inoffensive. The service is functional. And on and on. Ultimately forgettable. Not even worthy of a review, really.

Not so The Lobster, which comes by its three stars via a roller-coaster experience for myself and my three lunch companions. Lots of aspects of this place deserve five-star ranking; others made me feel one-star stabby. Highlights and lowlights to follow.

The good: price, location, ocean view, decor, parking, drink selection, main courses--all admirable. It comes across as a really reasonable, laid-back variety of Nice Place to Eat, packed (and I do mean PACKED) with fashionable people and the occasional spandexed cyclist. Um, how did that last thing happen? Never mind. I don't have a single problem with any of the above.

...Aaaaand the horrible: Table--I know, I know... someone has to sit at the Worst Table in the Restaurant, but it still grates. The constant distraction and annoyance of the NOISE LEVEL--I can't overemphasize it. if you're at all sensitive to this, go elsewhere. Grabby busboys (no, I'm NOT finished with this plate). Bland desserts that pleased no one.

About the only element I'd rate as three-star *in and of itself* was the service. Not awful, not amazing (our waiter seemed to warm to us... but really, should I have to "turn on the charm" just to get a meal that won't activate my food allergy? Seems a bit back-to-front somehow).

Full disclosure: This was a lunch that I wanted to be perfect, and the flaws in this restaurant line up particularly neatly with my long-established pet peeves. I'd like to go back sometime on a whim, maybe just by myself, and re-evaluate... especially considering that, at a restaurant named "The Lobster," no one at my table ate lobster. That seems like a bit of an oversight, doesn't it?

So let's say that this is three stars with room for improvement and a caveat: Will Visit Again.

My really good friend wanted to go out for Restaurant Week.  We are both "foodies" and work in the industry so when we go out we have a really good time and a critical eye.  He suggested The Lobster as it is one of his favorite places and he rarely gets a chance to go.  I have always known of it due to its location but always wrote it off as one of those restaurants that is a location only restaurant.  You know the type, great view, on the corner of Hot and Right Now and $30 fish and chips of Costco quality...
Well...I was so wrong.  The Lobster is refined and polished and ever so busy.  We were there on a Wednesday night and there was not an empty chair in the house.   I had the crab cakes and I about died.  They were beautiful!  I am from Maryland and I know my family back east would have strong words with me if they were to read this review...but they were the best crab cakes I have ever had!
Our sever was as professional as they come and really added to the experience.
I had such a great time and you will to.

Not that this place needs another amazing review but it's getting one anyway!

Here we go:

FOOD:
Crab Cake - Tender, fresh crab meat seared to perfection and laid atop a bed of what tasted like a thai peanut sauce. I usually like my crab cakes with some sort of creamy aioli but this peanut sauce complimented the dish so well! It also came with a small calamari salad w/ a light vinaigrette, nice touch. 5 STARS.
Shrimp Cocktail - 4 JUMBO shrimps. But at the end of the day, a shrimp cocktail is a shrimp cocktail. 4 STARS.
Halibut - A friend of mine had this so my judgment of this dish is based on a single bite. The halibut was PERFECTLY cooked to the point when the second her fork touched the fish, a small portion of it flaked off and you can see the fresh JUICY white meat of the fish. 4.5 STARS
John Dory w/ Potatoes & Truffle Beurre Blanc - For those of you who don't know what John Dory is, it's a mild white meat fish (& you're totally missing out). The fish was seasoned and seared perfectly with light golden color. It was laid on top of a mound of melt-in-your-mouth creamy mashed potatoes with a light truffle beurre blanc sauce surrounding it. Topped off with chunks of lobster & bits of tomato... this thing should be in a fish dinner hall of fame somewhere! Honestly just so FREAKING good that I felt it was morally wrong to consume it, but somehow I managed =) 7 STARS! oh wait, I can't do that huh? Okay, 5 STARS.

Atmosphere:
PERFECT for any occasion. Grabbing drinks with the girls/guys? Sit at the bar. Romantic dinner or dinner with friends? Sit inside or next to the floor to ceiling glass windows that give you a mesmerizing view of Santa Monica Pier. 5 STARS

Customer Service:
The hosts were great, busboys very friendly, but our server was just OK. She actually forgot to take one of the girls in my group's drink order and charged one of our credit cards twice. 3 STARS.

Heads up - Remember to get your parking validated. It's 5 bucks with validation & 20 without!

I really don't care to total the stars up, that John Dory was amazing.. 5 STARS!

Love, love, love this place!  This is perhaps one of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles!  It's a very hip, professional, and romantic place (all at the same time).  I always go here for business dinners, and I've never been dissapointed.  Beautiful views!

I've tried all of these - and LOVED it all:  lobster cocktail, crab cocktail, lobser / crab ceviche, gaspacho soup, fish of the day special, lobster, and prawns.  They also have amazing desserts here as well.  The wait staff is very professional and I've never been dissapointed.  They also have nice drinks here as well!

One of my most memorable thoughts here was that they have a Customer Relationship Management software that they use for their reservations.  Not only do they remember your name, but they remember your phone numbers, your favorite servers, etc.  Nice that they pay special attention to their guests.

Great Food, Great View, Great Service.

I'm a little biased because my meal was free, but that being said, the food was impressive.

If you have the money to spend, you should check out the Lobster.

Guess it just taste better in Maine and Boston...2 1/2 pound lobster was grilled and tasted okay but before that was a disaster.

My house salad leafs had a stench and texture of old rotting salad mix.  Some of the leafs were slimy...example when you leave those fresh salad mixes in the fridge too long...

Yes, we ate like pigs...I had the crab cake entree as an app and the cakes were decent but the white corn salad had rocks in it or something.

Of course I never send my food back because I am paranoid about people fing with my food as it is...

I am a fan. Mostly of lunch, unless someone else is paying for dinner...

1. beautiful views of the ocean and the pier. the ferris wheel's so pretty when lit up at night! see number 5
2. the LOBSTER-this place's called THE LOBSTER for a reason
3. FREAKIN HIGHLARIOUS people watching!! I heart making fun of tourists!
4. it's fun to bring out of town guests, and then laugh at them! haha just kidding
5. martini lunches are especially fun when you can go down to the pier afterward, play games, and ride on the ferris wheel!
6.service is great, friendly and sometimes funny
7. they take reservations
8. shopping (and other bars=more martinis yay!) in walking distance-@ 3rd st. promenade

If you don't mind walking you can park up the street in the garage at the mall-entrance on Broadway, but you can exit on and walk straight down Colorado. I always valet, it's the easiest and only costs about 5 bucks. Try the shrimp and crab louis (or is it louie?) salad, it's delicious!

Have been to The Lobster a few times for lunch, and last night went with friends.  I love the Lobster!!

The setting is great, fantastic views, great sunset.  But the food is what has me come back, and this place delivers.

View is nice, and the atmosphere is classy, but not too pretentious. The waiter we had was friendly/personable. They had several sustainable fish options on the menu but did not mark them (which would have been nice!) I chose the Halibut. It was perfectly cooked and a good portion size. The oysters on the half shell we ordered as an appetizer tasted very fresh, and I did not get sick! Not that I expected to, from such a nice restaurant, but still, you always worry a little! :)

Quick Review.

I like the drinks here and the view is obviously beautiful becuase its placed right in front of the beach and the pier. The food is pretty damn good, even their chicken.

I avoided this place for a long time because I usually associated it with the rest of the tourist trap restaurants on 3rd street. I love to come here right before the sunset and have a few drinks.

Went to the Lobster for a double date lunch... luckily we had reservations and it was a nice day out. If you go there, try to get a sit by the windows...nice view of the beach and ocean.

I had their sea bass entree and their crab salad, my bf had a soft shell crab and clam chowder. Everything was delicious! I especially liked my dish b/c the sea bass was perfectly cooked and it came with brown rice, green beans, and mushrooms. It inspired me to create a dish with similar ingredients.

I would definitely go back to enjoy the view and the food. Great company with friends made for a great experience at The lobster. The reason why I gave it 4 stars is b/c the service was OK, and it was a bit crowded than I would have liked for the tables to be placed. I definitely will get a table by the window next time!

Let me start off by saying that I did not go here intentionally.  I was on an interview and this is where they chose to take me for lunch without asking if I like seafood, which I don't.

I swear everything on the menu had lobster in it from the salad to the enchiladas, which makes sense given the name.  I'm sure it was good lobster but I'm not a good judge.

The reason I'm writing this review is that I love the location.  It's actually on the beach unlike some other restaurants that are on the city side of Ocean Ave. so you get an amazing view.  It's 180 degree windows which they open in the summer for a nice breeze.  I recommend going just for the view.

We went for DineLA week and the pre-fixe specials did not yield substantial savings on top of the regular menu, so half of us ordered from the DineLA menu, and the other half of our party ordered from the regular menu. The seared yellowfin tuna was soggy and did not have the "crisp" crust one would expect. The fllet medallions were nothing to rave about. The Pacific Sole - very generous portion, nice light crust, but again, nothing to rave about. The lobster was delicious though and the Dungeness Crab and Arugula salad was also a delight (very fresh, light, good mix of tangy citrus and with the sweetness of the crab). I'd say, stick to the lobster and you won't be disappointed. The other dishes are hit or miss.
