This business is a scam. Period. The more I think about it and experience all the shadiness going on here, the more upset I get. I fully believe this place is an unethical business -- surpass the fine line of marketing/advertisement by stepping into the false/scam/deception advertisement, where they just tell whatever you want to hear when viewing the premise.
Once signed the lease, you start to find out whatever they advertised or claimed initially was actually unsupported. And we're not talking about one misinformation--we're talking about EVERYTHING! You actually have to pay for your own closet shelves (the maintenance team told me leasing agent outright lied about such being free, construction sound is actually disruptive (see other Yelp reviews and 3rd party reviews on this infamous topic--we were lied to about it being completed within a short period of time? Never happened.
The tenants who couldn't take it anymore, and chose to leave did NOT get discount or anything; they simply had to pay for breaking the lease... is that fair? Especially after being tricked to sign up for this said Lease Agreement.
I had 4 neighbors on my floor--all left within one year and chose not to renew the lease--with some quick research, you will see completely amazing reviews elsewhere, i.e., where the management actually cares about appeasing the tenants. Devonshire, you're in a hospitality business selling your luxury apartments, DID YOU NOT KNOW THIS?
Apartment seekers, go elsewhere. I'm more than happy to via private message, as many have reached out through the years, about the horrible experience I experienced -- AND violations of the housing law by their practices -- while I lived there.
Note: ever since Jon Russo left, there's no more adults at this leasing office--it's a circus here with bunch of clowns running the place.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0Jul 1, 2021Previous reviewWorst place to be, consistent with all the other negative reviews. People are leaving. More to be added later. Also, note: they lie to their tenants about having various categories of individuals living here from the beginning -- FALSE, people leave here after one year full of disappointment. We've been there and do not wish anyone with self-respect to come and SUFFER here. You will start noticing these after you get locked-in. They lie about the rate being increased by market each year and it wouldn't affect you much yearly--FALSE, people are leaving because of the rate as well. They claim they keep their tenants happy with such low rates, FALSE, once you move out, your unit becomes significantly cheaper than what they "offered" you.
This business is a scam. Note too that they have their own employees post positive reviews about themselves all throughout, intentionally violate or ignorant of Yelp Policies.
My list goes on and on. I will post pictures of this trash building and the construction that never stops. Stay tuned for more updates.Jun 26, 2020Previous reviewUpdate June 26, 2020 - This place is under construction everywhere--sky club, units next to you, below you, above you, etc. you'll never find peace. We've met individuals who broke their lease term just because they don't want to deal with the sound. If you want to stay here, come back after 2022, when all demolitions are gone. In the meantime, construction happens at least 5 days a week, starting as early as 8 am. (Would've been manageable, but with all working from home, it's a disaster!!! Do your research before ending up here!

We have been living here for less than a year in one of the newly renovated premium top floor apartments with a lovely view of the city.
We are reasonably satisfied and glad we have picked One Devonshire for at least our first year in Boston. Trust me, this is a well thought out decision after checking out lots and lots of places (with three-four weeks to explore and consider the many available and competitive options elsewhere in this area) before finally choosing Devonshire.
I must say, it is not without flaws and some technical/logistical protocols could probably adjusted to make One Devonshire worthy of the reputation is has in the community--it is well-known among professionals as high-end/luxury apartments, which I personally believe such recognition/perception either were carried over from previous decades or advertisement or whatever factors they may be, but such prestige definitely did not come from the current status of the building.
Regardless, One Devonshire should definitely try to live up to that prestige (where ever it may have came from) it already gained despite current evidence to the contrary, which in my view, it would not take too much more effort live up to the public recognition.
Points to consider: the business center/study/lobby and lounge space is nonexistent except for additional fees (e.g. ~$70/mo/person) aka the "Sky Club". Elsewhere some or all of these are complementary (and it's always good for residents to have the options of going without the hassle/inconvenience of paying the membership fees regularly or lose it all. Even assuming you do pay the ~70/mo/person, the business/study center is still not resident friendly. In contrast, if I had picked, say, 666 Washington or the Victor by Windsor, I could be chilling or studying/working in the lounge or business/study center anytime I feel like (or the jobs or my study/work style required of me) all complementary (elsewhere). Hence, not only the hassle of monthly/regular fees requirement but also, the imposed curfew hours at Devonshire.
The lobby -- it's somewhat spacious but with only two sofas plus two mini seats, for a maximum of 6 people at most--basically in American culture, only one party (of 1, of 2... up to party of 6) would be using the sofa at any point in time. Other residential buildings, you can at least see seats elsewhere without feeling like you're invading others' personal space, such as here when the sofas are already occupied by at least one party (even party of 1).

We have lived at the Devonshire for five years. It is a safe, clean building that was fantastically run by a kind man who really looked after residents. Since Bozzuto has taken over, that has gone out the window. There is construction noise constantly, sometimes so deafening we can't hear each other from a few feet away. At $4k+ a month, I expect Bozzuto to do something to make up for the inconvenience. Taking a percentage off the rent would have been a good start.
The staff are generally very nice, but very little mask compliance by the front door staff during COVID-19. Changes to the administrative tasks have been horrible. Residents frequently wait three hours to a full day to receive packages because Bozzuto management overloads the package handling on one staff member. He's a really nice guy who deserves better.
The apartment itself is just fine. Secure and comfortable. Air conditioning and heat work very well. However twice now black mold has grown under our floors and is rapidly spreading. My husband has a severe mold allergy and even I am starting to feel unwell. Most recently maintenance visited us four days ago and assured us they would be in touch about a repair. As of this writing, there has been zero communication.
We have loved living at the Devonshire for all our years here but it seems that it's joined the march of developers cutting corners and charging excessive rent. We won't be renewing our lease.
UPDATE ON REPAIRS:
We have now been forced out of our apartment for nine days. Management has put us in a guest apartment which has cost us a ton of money in groceries and supplies. There wasn't even soap provided for us. This is day three of management and maintenance assuring us that the repairs would be done today. I just walked in to find that the repairs that originally took place in the hallway have now extended to our bedroom. During a pandemic we've now had workmen handle our dresser, bookshelf, and most disgustingly our *bed linens*.
Communication has been like pulling teeth. No updates when promised, no repair progress as promised. This is pathetic.
DON'T MOVE IN until someone else takes this place over because Bozzuto is a joke.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Daniel E.Boston, MA0138Aug 19, 2021Updated review
Devonshire has AMAZING views and finishes within the units. The apartments and amenities (except Lobby) just went through renovations (finally stopped). The pool on the 42nd floor isn't open yet but will be really nice.
Concierges and staff are really nice if you ask them for anything. The leasing/management office has improved in the last 6 months.
The location is amazing, you'll be within walking distance of everything. You can walk to Seaport, North End, BackBay, Cambridge and have so many food options nearby.
I wrote a negative review almost Fall 2020 after poor transparency and care from corporate (Bozzuto) and the leasing office. However, in the last few months, they have improved a lot on communicating with residences, organizing events, and having everything run smoothly.
**If you are in your 20s, beware that most neighbors won't be, quiet hours are at 9 pm.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 16, 2020Previous reviewDevonshire has amazing views and finishes within the units. However it is going renovations and for being such an old being (1980's) the walls are not as thick as you might expect so the noise can be incredibly disturbing. (Also not mentioned when moving in as I toured on a weekend.)
Currently the amenities, gym and pool are undergoing renovations without there being any opening dates. The lobby, hallways are still a bit outdated (as the renovations will continue).
If you are young, beware that most neighbors won't be, quiet hours are at 10pm.
Georgia was really helpful through the leasing process, however when she took some vacations days her colleges were not as helpful or nice. Georgia promised amenities would be open within a month of my move in. That was some months ago and nobody took the time to reach back and it's clear they had no plans on that date. I would've never leased somewhere without a GYM for so long and the manager ignored my concern.
Concierges and staff are really nice if you ask them for anything. However, most will not greet you immediately and only some will say hello back.
Bozzuto's on site management people at the building are terrible at communication (even the staff will say this), from basic event notification, to reservation of workspaces (empty apartments with desks and the cheapest metal chairs) or even just getting a reply for an email can take multiple emails. Everyone replies to emails as if they had never read what they are replying to.
Fobs haven't worked for months to new residents.
Corporate doesn't seem to care either about the issues. Bozzuto shows an all around attitude of NGAF. I tried talking to them before posting here but I can't keep waiting weeks for them to do something.
I think they are being slow to adapt to a Renter's market as rent keeps falling across Boston. I'm sure I'll find something with a better view and probably cheaper than my current lease price a year from now. - Daniel F.Boston, MA222919Feb 11, 2022
When I was considering which apartment I wanted to lease in May 2021, my main needs were decent size, downtown location, and access to a pool. The leasing office ensured that the pool would be open by end of May 2021, so I was excited to sign. The pool was not opened until February 2022 - 9 months later into my 15 month lease. When I approached the leasing department on this matter, they stated that it was not explicitly written in the lease so it is not a breach and there is nothing they can do about it. So my recommendation is do not listen to a thing they say. Assess the building as is and if it does not live up to your expectations as is, do not sign regardless of what you are told.

Bait and switch. Atrocious security, only half the amenities open, and an unresponsive front office. I decided to rent at the Devonshire based on the amenities available. This included an indoor pool, an indoor play place for children, a very nice gym, and office space. Since moving in, the only amenities open are for adults. As the weather turns chilly, the building only sees fit open those locations that are geared towards their older residents. I feel very much like this was a bait and switch, because when I had called originally the answer was that these amenities, specifically for children and or geared to children would be open. The building is situated in downtown Boston. Which is Fantastic location for anyone living and working downtown, just don't expect your $5,000 a month for rent to actually earn you a call back once you've signed the lease.

Devonshire is the absolute most bang you can get for your buck in Boston. It's real luxury (not like these new trendy apartment buildings with paper-thin walls). My wife and I have lived here for two years and have only good things to say about it. Excellent amenities, a great community, and responsive building management. This is the first place that I have lived where I thought everyday, "I love this place."
Here's what I love:
The Gym/Top Floor Fitness - They have an actual gym that is spacious enough to workout in, a yoga studio, and an indoor lap pool that is rarely in use (I swam laps during the first snow storm of the season). In addition to this they have professional workout classes everyday of the week except Friday. There's yoga (which I haven't done) and strength/high-intensity interval training type classes (abs Monday, lower body Tuesday, upper body Thursday and full body Saturday). I go to the strength classes pretty religiously. Colin, the owner of Top Floor Fitness and instructor for the strength classes, is excellent with correcting form and pushing you to get a good workout. The classes are also a great way to meet other people in the building.
Culture - Devonshire seems to be very effective at cultivating a good culture. They hold seasonal parties, with a wide-range of people. The building is normally quiet. We've met and become friends with a lot of young professionals and expats (but there are also older people and empty nesters). The leasing office and people at the front desk are always nice, helpful and very responsive.
Building Management - The building is very clean--I've never seen any bugs, mice or anything. There have been a few occasions in the past where I needed to call maintenance. They've always been quick to respond and the issue has always been resolved pretty immediately. There was one occasion when I smelled marijuana coming through the vent in the bathroom. Not wanting to make a huge deal about it, I emailed the building manager. He responded immediately, told me it was being looked into and told me to call the front desk if it happened again--it never did.
When we first started looking around Boston for apartment complexes we looked at a lot of places. The major impression I got from most of the other complexes was that they were interested in churning people in and out; they'd lure you in with a good deal and then raise your rate extensively when your lease came up for renewal. I held out writing a review for Devonshire because I was curious how much our rent would go up. For the first year we had a very modest rise (less than 3% increase) and the following year there was no increase at all. I guess they want their tenants to stay.
You can't go wrong with this place.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Nicholas - Thank you for your thoughtful review of Devonshire! We miss you here and hope everything is going well.

Location... Location... Locations! Steps from the Boston Common, the Water, and in the heart of the Financial District... the Devonshire is one of the best located buildings in the City, especially if you work Downtown.
Beyond the incredible location and first-class amenities, the staff here are wonderful. Everyone has a positive and upbeat attitude and are always warm and welcoming... it feels as familial as a high-rise building can be. They remember the little things about you.
Lastly, the leasing office staff (Svetlana and Michelle in particular), make every concerted effort to make your living experience spectacular. With thoughtful and curated resident events, and a staff that works to ensure any unit work (construction, things breaking, etc.) are done effortlessly and at any time of the day, you really could not ask for more.
I am happy to call the Devonshire my home.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - L T.Cambridge, MA0252Jun 11, 2020
They've been doing renovations all over the building since last year, and will not finish until 2022. Now with COVID 19 going around and my office requiring staff to work from home, everyone in my meetings can hear the loud construction noises. (Note: Management does offer shared space to work, but this obviously is not an optimal solution to have every day.) You sometimes also get to smell the turpentine or glue or whatever it is they use for the paint and/or in their flooring.
This building is in a good location and management is attentive (kudos to Michelle). However, given the chance to do this all over again, I would have left the building and probably consider coming back after the construction is over.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Smith E.Downtown, Boston, MA992Jun 11, 2021
There is so much construction noise within the building, particularly above my unit, that it is very difficult to carry on with anything even with earplugs on. This is especially bothersome since I, like many other residents I'm sure, are working from home. The noise (e.g. - hammering, drilling, etc) would get to be so loud that I'd often find myself with no choice but to leave. This has been going on for months and the noise typically starts before 9 AM and continues past 5 PM. I should've been told that there would be construction noise impacting my unit so that I could've made an informed decision about whether to rent here. I've been here 7 months thus far and I am just counting down the days until my lease ends.

I'm finally moving out of the Devonshire (and out of Boston). I've now lived here for 2.5 years and in 3 different apartments, and I've loved every moment of it. I'd still give it a 5 star and if I'm ever back in Boston, this is the only place I'd consider.

Hi Dev - Thank you so much for your thoughtful review of Devonshire and for being such a wonderful part of our community!
Nov 26, 2017Previous reviewWelcome to my thorough review of The Devonshire! The bottom line is that I love living here and would highly recommend it to others. But please read more below and feel free to shoot me a message if you have any more questions!
My credibility:
- Lived in two different apartments (9th floor 1 bed 1 bath and on the 30th floor 2 bed 2 bath) on the South side of the building over 1.5 years.
Cons:
- Yes, there's construction on the North side of the building which may result in more noise on weekdays for only the North Side. It's not the Devonshire's fault, so moving on.
- Parking. Is a pain unless you want to pay up. Convenience: Devonshire Parking, Pi Alley Garage (opposite the building) for at $400-500/month. "Economical": Government Center Garage ($~300/month). Inconvenient but an option regardless if you use your car less frequently: Alewife Station weekly parking at $55/week, easily connected by the Red line (4 min walk, 15 min ride). Good luck, you'll need it.
Pros:
- Excellent concierge team. Even when a bad apple gets hired, they usually are gone within a few weeks (shout out to Shawn, Paul, Margaret, John, and others!).
- Excellent maintenance team. I've put 10+ maintenance requests in my time here and all have been attended to in a timely manner and very professionally, including one emergency maintenance request.
- Excellent leasing team. They know all tenants by their first name and make you feel as though you're family. They've also gone out of their way to accommodate reasonable requests (painting walls, drilling small holes/mounting stuff on walls, extra shelves, freebies when signing lease, etc.)
- Excellent "treats". There's a mountain of cupcakes on Valentines Day and Halloween, one hosted yearly dinner (summer bash), two cocktails & hors d'oeuvres (holiday season and one more).
- No frills (which I prefer). Don't want to use the gym/pool? Don't pay the extra fee for it. Keeps the rent down.
- Competitive rent. In comparison to 660 Washington, Avalon Theater District, The Kensington, Watermark Seaport Apartments, and other comparable apartments in the area, The Devonshire is very well priced. They know it's an old building (I barely feel it) and have priced it accordingly. The rent is even lower because of the optional gym/pool signup, and is comparable to other apartments in the area when included. Trust me, I've checked.
- Location. Can't speak highly enough about this. I'm in my mid-twenties and I love a mix of a quiet place that's close to the hustle of the city. The Devonshire is on the border of FiDi (super quiet on nights/weekends) and Downtown Crossing (super busy and full of life) and is the ideal mix of both. If you exit from the front of the building, you're swarmed with lively people, but if you exit from the rear, it's silent. The Orange/Blue line is literally underneath you (20 seconds from door to door), the Red line is about a 4-minute walk, and the Green line is a 3-minute walk. A ton of restaurants to get food from. Roche Brothers, Whole Foods, and Haymarket for groceries, CVS and 24/7 Walgreens for all other needs. Bank of America and Santander ATM close by, and a Starbucks & DD downstairs. Can't ask for more.
- Laundry. 2 washers/driers per floor, fairly priced. I've yet to find both in simultaneous use even during peak times on weekends.
- Top Floor Amenities. If you pay for it, the top floor amenities are amazing to say the least. In order of my favorites: pool, gym, sauna, work area, lounge w/ pool table, sunbathing area, conference room. The staff there is not the Devonshire's but are pretty amazing regardless.
- Finally, the apartment itself.
What's amazing: The view from most apartments, thickness of the walls, closet space, the electricity/water/heating charges are included in the rent, ventilation/insulation, HVAC units, the online web portal to manage everything such as guest access, buying/selling stuff, and maintenance requests.
What's average: decent sized kitchen with moderately new equipment, fairly well sized bathroom with curved shower rods, well-sized living rooms and bedrooms, the internet by Comcast.
What needs improvement: need a larger medicine cabinet in the bathroom, and that's all I could think of.
Like I said, the Devonshire is an amazing place to live and I think most people with reasonably high expectations would love it. Good luck with the home hunt and feel free to shoot me a message if you have questions! I'm also happy to accept a referral credit if my review helped you decide ;).
