Foundry Coffee
NY Manhattan West Village
1pm Monday 17th August 2015
Five Stars
It's a mixture of coffee shop and Karaoke bar. You would never stumble upon this place because it's extremely unostentatious. It's next door to the Bleecker Street Record Store. The place is well air conditioned. There is a large unvarnished concrete bar counter seating about 12-15. There are outlets underneath. There are four smaller tables filled with laptop workers furiously typing away. They have an atm, printer, and private rooms to rent. There was low volume jazz music playing and only a couple people talking.
I ordered an iced coffee using the Cups App. It came in a Kirin Ichiban pint glass. The coffee was smooth and delicious especially with some half and half. The ice was low grade chip.
I enjoyed this place for its low key atmosphere.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nov 14, 2015
Love this place. I like to drop by whenever I'm in the area. The coffee selection is solid and you can tell the owner puts a lot of heart into his product. There are several tea options too. Service is friendly and it's a good place to study or grab a coffee with friends. They have a bar where you can sit at like a regular bar to enjoy your coffee or do work. At night the space turns into a karaoke bar, during the day you can rent the rooms for study or work meetings.
They used to have amazing cookies and muffins, hope they bring them back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Fion W.Queens, NY624179315Nov 15, 2016
Whoa, karaoke bar at night and coffee shop in the morning. It doesn't have a store front sign that indicates that it's a coffee shop, so look out for the big orange "KARAOKE BOHO" sign.
There were large tables that are great for group studying on the side. They also have a bunch of bar seating too, which makes this place so unique. The music playlist was also on point, the background jazz music was a bonus. Now to the good stuff -- the coffee. I ordered the latte and it was huge! It's a great deal for the amount you get. The latte was very smooth and shout out to the barista for the pretty latte art .Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 49120751299Dec 9, 2016
Solid coffee with friendly staff. Bonus: they're on the CUPS app.
I'm really thrown off by the fact that this turns into a karaoke bar at night. That aspect of the place really, really permeates into the day time coffee hours. It's dark, sparse, and just a gloomy place to do work. If I had a choice, I don't think I would come here to do my work. There are also no power outlets that I could see so ... workability is limited if your laptop is a battery drainer.
It's just very lackluster and basically the same as the star rating explanation- just A-OK.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jun 29, 2016
It's so hard to find coffee shops in NYC that are actually trying to be study/work spaces but the Coffee Foundry is secure in it's identity, and provides the sort of cold caffeinated space where I'm at my most productive.
Looks like it's a karaoke bar at night too? Dope.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 27, 2010
If you like coffee, this new little place that's situated in the front of a karaoke bar is serving pour-over coffee, ie a filtration method that allows the coffee grinds to sit in the hot water for a few minutes prior to dispensing which results in a coffee that is unbelievably smooth and aromatic. It also helps that they roast their own beans and grind them specfically for this pour over method.
Again, if you love coffee or are just looking for a quick caffiene fix, definitely stop on by for a cup. You won't regret it.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 31, 2010
After the article in the NYT's heralded that so many coffee cafe's are going sans-wireless, and trying to eliminate "lingering laptop" users, it was nice to finally stumble upon this place on a sunny Sunday afternoon with its wireless beacon calling me to my next caffeine fix.
I'm really not that hip, because from the friendly counter person, I opted for the machiotto which is like a triple shot of espresso, that I hear is normally served with a side of seltzer water. This was my first time for such an intense and bitter drink.
I kinda enjoyed it, but my second drink was one of their discounted beers ($2 off) ringing in at $3 and less than the coffee.
The counter people were cool, but not so cool that I didn't feel comfortable. Nice space, with no sports on the TV, which was a refreshing change.
I'm going to have to come back for the Karaoke !?
The caffeine will help me with my version of Billy Joel's "We didn't start the fire".Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 7295621403Mar 22, 2016
Nice cafe in the West Village which is good for working. Great espresso drinks with soy/almond milk options. One size option only- the almond latte I had was huge! Delicious cuppa! Nice and creamy. Almond lattes are hit or miss and this was a hit!!
It is really dark in here so depends if you like that kind of vibe/ambience.
Overall a good place if you need to sit down and work for a little. It is quiet and most people seem to be there to work. Not much chatting/ socializers. Great coffee which is most important!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 22, 2015
If you can't decide which coffee to buy, it's Coffee Floundery. And if you pick someone up or get picked up and have animal-style fun times, then it's Coffee Poundry. If a female is involved, then it may include her Coffee Moundry. Or not.
I was here in 2014 with my coffee-loving food tour friend, and we weren't impressed at all. The flavour of the coffee just reminded us of Starbucks. We tend to agree on coffees, for some reason.
Lovely little environment in here. Tiny little coffee shop, fun place to be. Good for students and working on laptops.
Other than that, the same exact experience as I had at Blue Bottle Coffee, almost to the letter. Again, this coffee is basically like a stronger version of Starbucks. I'm sure it's very good if that's what you like (intense caffeine shots), but that's the opposite of what I like. I prefer milky, creamy, silky, very gentle teas and coffees, such as Tim Hortons 4 & 4, or maybe a Dunkin Donuts 4 & 4. So Starbucks to me is the ultimate nightmare. And anyone that is similar to Starbucks in any way is not going to get it done for me. They were pretty nice servers, so that's a good thing.
While I appreciate that this is, to many people, the best coffee in town... I found it to be something I'd never drink again. It scores 3 just because it's local, not corporate. Even more local than Blue Bottle. I'm just not into the harsh Starbucksy coffees.
And according to Garland, "If more people feel like you do about this place, it will become The Lost Foundry."Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0 - Priyanka C.Cherry Hill, NJ3153937Mar 24, 2016
Coffee bar by day, Karaoke bar by night? Coffee Foundry is definitely a unique place- but really who hasn't wanted to get some work done under silver tinsel at a bar?
I happened to stumble upon this little niche cafe when looking for somewhere to park myself and study for a few hours. From the outside it definitely looks like any other karaoke bar but when you come in, you notice that behind the bar, next to the bar glasses is an espresso machine, coffee beans etc. I got a massive latte for $4 and set up camp at the bar. The baristas are super nice and attentive and made a pretty decent latte. There is free wifi and TONS of outlets all along the bar and at the tables. Considering it has all the makings of a perfect study spot and the location, you would think it would be flooded with NYU students but thankfully it wasn't too full. It's definitely not the quietest spot, but for me it's the perfect place to get a little studying done in between meetings.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
