Taj Mahal is one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. Its menu lists vegetarian and non-vegetarian appetizers, chaat, soups, salads, kathi rolls, vegetarian entrees, tandoori entrees, rices, curries, some Indo-Chinese entrees, breads, desserts, and drinks. Most appetizers and desserts cost several dollars, and most entrees cost less than $20.
I have eaten meals from Taj Mahal many times over many years. Most recently, I ordered food for delivery. My husband ate butter chicken, which had a wonderfully sweet and spicy sauce and large chunks of juicy chicken, and garlic naan, which was perfectly baked. I ate vegetable jalfrezi, which contained a variety of fresh vegetables and tasted as spicy as I had requested. I also ate basmati rice, which was cooked perfectly, and onion naan, which was very flavorful.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Oct 15, 2021Previous reviewThrough Taj Mahal's website, I placed an order for pickup. The menu online listed over 130 Indian appetizers, entrees, sides, desserts, and beverages. The email confirmation said that my order would be ready in about one hour, and it was ready on time. Here are my reviews for the foods that I ordered:
Aloo Tikki - 3 stars - These patties were made from potatoes, peas, and spice, which are ingredients that I typically enjoy, but this appetizer tasted just OK to me.
Chicken pakora - 5 stars - These boneless chicken fritters reminded me of chicken tenders but had a mild spice.
Samosa chaat - 4 stars - Samosa chaat was crumbled and topped with many chickpeas and some yogurt, mint, and tamarind.
Poori aloo - 3 stars - This bread had a good flavor, but I personally did not like how it was thin and limp.
Garlic naan - 5 stars - I liked how this naan was thicker, baked well, and had a tasty garlic flavor.
Malai kofta - 3.5 stars - These were vegetable balls, and I have eaten better ones at other restaurants, but the sauce was flavorful.
Tikka masala - 3.5 stars - The chicken was meaty, a large size, and juicy. I did request a mild spiciness, but I have tasted more flavorful mild sauces at other restaurants.
Basmati rice - 5 stars - The rice was cooked well.
Extras - 5 stars - This restaurant gave me some extras such as samosa and sauces, which tasted good.Jun 20, 2017Previous reviewWe went here for a lunch buffet, which cost only $10 per person. The selection included chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, malai kofta, basmati rice, chick peas, naan, and many other foods. The quality and taste of the food was good. The waiter refilled our drinks often.

Take a ride to Flavortown....
Yes using G.F's reference is a bit cheesy, but the food at Taj Mahal is anything but. I stopped in for the lunch buffet and as soon as I walked in all my senses were tingling, and in the good way. There were 3 seperate food areas with a ton of delicious looking items. I did not know what 90% of the dishes were, but everything looked so good and the aroma was so intoxicating that I sampled every single thing they had on the line. By the time I was finished I felt like a local stepping off the train in Mumbai.
All the food was absolutely delicious and each dish prepared so beautifully. The service was top notch, I never needed for anything and my server also made some excellent suggestions, as to my eating experience I would definitely go back for the buffet. Prices were good for what you got and who knew I loved goat curry, AlohaHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Christie N.Pittsburgh, PA0183Mar 24, 2024
My favorite for the past 28 years. None better. Order off menu or buffet and it's fabulous.

Buffet was absolutely killer. A bit on the pricey side so make sure to go when super hungry to get your moneys worth.

My first visit of 2023 & they've really spruced up the interior. New flooring, paint, lighting. They serve liquor, not sure if they did before? I just come to pig out on Pittsburgh's best Indian Buffet. Always a large variety of dishes on their M-F 11-3pm buffet & even more special stuff on weekends or holidays. Always busy so we tend to come between 1-2 for lunch. Two plates & some mango pudding for dessert & I'm stuffed. I've never ordered from the menu here, and never had anything but water to drink...but I've eaten the buffet many times over the years & it's consistently delicious! They have meat, vegetarian, vegan & gluten free selections on buffet.
Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jul 2, 2021Previous reviewStill the best Indian Buffet in Pittsburgh. They have their lunch buffet M-F 11am-3pm and weekends All Day! Come early or late for best available seating or you may have to wait for a table. We arrived at 1:30 on a Friday for lunch & by 2pm there were many tables and all dishes were replenished. They re-did the inside on recent years, fresh colorful paint & new artwork. They have a ton of dishes & special appetizers & specialties on the weekend. You can order from the menu too, but why? LOL Their buffet is outstanding. The only thing that was not as good on this visit (first visit since Covid restrictions loosened & mask mandate lifted) is they had a different bread today, more like roti or chapati and although it was hot from the oven or skillet it was tough & hard to chew, not soft & melt in your mouth like the naan. But all the dishes were yummy as usual (Tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, sag paneer, chana masala, had some salad & mango pudding. They have a few dishes labeled vegan (one was a noodle dish today) If you like Indian food you'll love Taj Mahal!
Dec 29, 2017Previous reviewOh man, if you love Indian food you gotta try their buffet! And even if you don't like Indian food, you might like it after you eat here. I'm no expert on Indian cuisine, but I like everything on their buffet. There is a huge variety of dishes to choose from and also vegetarian and gluten free options. Their naan bread is delish, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, goat curry, Palak paneer, dal, plus desserts like mango pudding. You will not be disappointed!

Just OK. Ordered for New Years Day. Have ordered here for years! Chicken Tikka Masala was average. Tandoori Lamb was full of gristle and for the money, not worth it. Veg shahi korma was bland. More onions and potatoes than the nine veg. Chana masala was greasy. Not the same since the new owners took over. Will be trying g the new place in Fox Chapel. Sad because the previous owners were lovely.

I don't know what to say other than this place is just OK. There's nothing that stands out as being a "must have". It's reliably decent but you're never going to walk out feeling like your life was changed. We've been a few times and have ordered many of the usual Indian cuisine mainstays... the butter chicken is decent, but probably a bit too sweet for my taste. The biryani is underhwelming. Something about the spice profile just doesn't work for me. The curries and lamb dishes do get a little bit better, but again, nothing that jumped out for me.
I realize this is a very non-descript review, but that's kind of how I feel about dining here. That said, if you're craving Indian food in a pinch, you also won't leave feel short changed. It will definitely fill the gap, but I just think there are better options elsewhere.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Manojkumar P.Pittsburgh, PA3310Aug 13, 2023
"I recently dined at Taj Indian restaurant and was thoroughly impressed by the culinary experience. The Malai Kofta, a delightful blend of perfectly fried vegetable and paneer balls in a luscious tomato-based gravy, left my taste buds dancing with delight. The dish was rich, flavorful, and beautifully balanced.
Equally praiseworthy was the Paneer Bhurji, a scrumptious combination of scrambled paneer cooked with aromatic spices, tomatoes, and onions. The flavors were robust and comforting, and I couldn't help but savor each bite.
What truly stood out, beyond the delectable dishes, was the reasonable pricing, making the entire experience even more satisfying. The convenient location only added to the overall enjoyment of my visit.
Taj Indian restaurant undoubtedly impressed me with their authentic flavors and inviting ambiance. If you're looking for a culinary journey that combines flavor, affordability, and convenience, Taj should be your destination of choice."

Exemplary. Fitting for World Leaders as well as Joe Everyman; and fun for the whole family!
Great food, great variety. Go for the buffet. Enjoy it. Come back and bring your friends. Everyone loves it. Sometimes they make something out of left field that is good for a change up. Worth every penny. Buy by the pound for take-out if you want. From chaat to kheer this place has endured as one of my favorite indian restaurants in Pittsburgh, possibly anywhere. It's just a reliable stable place, when others come and go, wax and wane, they have been here, through the thick and thin, and they are still doing it day in and day out.
I remember when they had a 20 foot hole in their parking lot because of some crazy sinkhole or something. I'm pissed the 5-11 store next door covered up their sign. Don't worry about the rough edges in the decor, the food speaks for itself.
I've been coming here for over a decade and hands down its always been a great experience. I don't think they've ever "got me" with their buffet, other than got me satisfied.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jul 16, 2018Previous reviewOne of the top 3 Indian restaurants in Pittsburgh and served the prime minister of India when he came here. Sometimes it's a little too salty.
