Wow, this place is so tiny and not your typical SF omakase style place. But, what they make up in size is delicious and fresh sushi that is affordable, filling, and top notch.
We always get the same things but everything on the menu is amazing. The must gets are the baked mussels appetizers, Hawaiian Rolls (#2 is best), and spicy hamachi roll. The last is one of the best rolls I've ever eaten (the lime zest is the secret!!).
Wonderful staff, very professional chefs, and fair wait list (if you're on the list before close you will be served).
Definitely one of the best sushi spots in SF and the best if you're looking for value and quality!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

4/5 for me
Small mom and pop sushi restaurant with great service and high quality fish. We didn't, but I would try to sit at the bar if you can. It looked like a lot of regulars sat there and would routinely chat with who I presumed to be the owners.
What stood out to me were the baked dishes and the use of mangos in some of their rolls. I wouldn't skip out on the baked dishes, they are different than your typical and very hearty. I like the use of mangos in rolls and thought it complimented the dishes well.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Laura K.Hayes Valley, San Francisco, CA1381812Feb 2, 2024
I used to go here all the time pre-pandemic and I remember being really impressed by the quality/freshness. I went back this past weekend and the place hasn't changed at all! Super reasonably priced and it's no longer cash only which is great!
Will be coming back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

this is a great sushi spot in the city! I love the Hawaiian aesthetic in the restaurant and how they incorporate fruits like mango into the sushi. The mango is clearly really fresh and add extra tanginess to the sushi. Their baked mussels were also the most delicious baked seafood I've had. Service was great and the only reason I would give it four out of five is because it is still pricey. Most sushi in the city is pricey though.

My favorite neighborhood sushi joint! The fish is always fresh and generous cuts. The staff is friendly and welcoming. I highly recommend this place, been coming here for years!

We went to Sushi Zone last week for my child's birthday and, as always, everything was delicious! The waiters are friendly and the chef is a legitimate sushi chef from Japan. The fish is high quality and the portions are really much better than other places; and at a reasonable price. It almost seems too good to be true. But it is true!

This small sushi restaurant is a hidden gem that deserves all five stars. If you're in search of an authentic dining experience that delights the senses, look no further. You cannot find such amazing and unique sushi rolls anywhere else.

Had another amazing dinner at Sushi Zone. As usual the host was super friendly and welcoming, the food was delicious, and the service was great. This is our favorite sushi spot in the city. For us what sets it apart is the intimate, eclectic environment and super fresh sushi at reasonable prices.
Our go to appetizers are the baked mussels and baked bass which are both sooo tasty.
Our go to rolls are the spicy hamachi and Hawaiian roll #2 which has a great combination of albacore, mango, and macadamia nuts.
We usually get a small assortment of nigiri and the cuts of the fish are always generous.
If you are looking to get awesome sushi at a reasonable price and eat it in a no frills, friendly, and intimate setting then this is the place to go.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Still the best sushi in the city, without a doubt! It's been a while since I've had a chance to revisit Sushi Zone, but I think about it often. I popped in on the earlier side (around 5:30) and the counter was completely open though the 2 indoor tables were occupied and a few of the outdoor ones as well. I'm so excited about the outdoor expansion and the parklet as the seating used to be very limited though the wait always worth it. I had the baked mussels (even more delicious than i remembered), a spicy mango salmon roll (so amazing), and a small hot sake. Total was about $35 pre-tip. It was more a snack than a meal, and i was very tempted to get another roll but i managed to exercise some self-control. The staff were quick, attentive, and very nice. The restaurant is pretty no frills, but i love it and nothing else matters when the food is this good.

More than a decade (and much more sushi experience) later, Sushi Zone still holds up!
The baked bass and mussels are classics, but the maki are the reason to come. Hawaiian roll #2 features a fresh coat of macadamia, and the King California has big ol' lumps of crab. Also, get whatever roll features mango or papaya.
For nigiri, the amaebi was a great special item, with the fried crispy shrimp heads arriving hot and washed down great with a beer.
The outdoor seating options are great, with about 5 tables and a 4-seat counter facing into the restaurant. Busy takeout window as well.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Dec 1, 2010Previous reviewReally cute little place in Hayes Valley. Definitely call ahead if you can (it seemed like the waitress was taking phone rezies), since otherwise, you'll end up waiting about an hour, even if you get there right when dinner starts cranking up. Nice date place if you want to just chitchat for a long time, haha.
It's fun watching the sushi chef and his apprentice slice up the fish since they do it so fast and so prettily. I think I got the Hawaiian #2 roll and another roll with unagi (it's dying out, but it's too frackin' tasty...). Somehow the sushi here was on another level than sushi I've had elsewhere. It might just be ambience + the longgg wait making me delusional, but I swear it's good.
