I've eaten here a handful of times and thought that I've had enough Peking duck from here to finally leave a review
I cannot speak of the other options on the menu, but I can definitely confirm that the peking duck dinner is well deserving of 5 stars. This meal consists of duck soup, duck fried rice, and the roasted duck served with veggies + baos.
Soup: The soup is both light in appearance and taste, but do not be mistaken by that description. It was delicious and had a refreshing taste which I believe is due to use of lemon grass and other vegetables used for the broth. It was a nice palette cleanser between bites of the fried rice and baos.
Fried rice: Very standard fried rice. Wasn't anything amazing, but the portion was large and easily shared between 2-3 people
Duck: The main star of the dinner. I love that they still incorporate slicing of the duck in front of the table. They also make sure to pour all the delicious juices on top after the carving. The skin is perfectly crisp and I purposely looked for the fatty pieces that perfectly paired with the green onions and pickled radish.
TDLR: just 'ducking' go!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 8, 2024
I have not been back here in over a decade and I was very excited to come back.
I found that the place has expanded and really changed as far as the decor and environment and now had a bar.
Parking in this area is just as hard as it was 10 years ago.
Upon entering, there was already a line and you had to put your name in, but we only waited less than 15 minutes, which was great.
The menu is very extensive with so many different choices and combinations which I think appealed to so many different people. When you scan the restaurant you will see all kinds of people eating there which really shows its ability to cater to diverse tastes and diverse people.
We ordered the Peking aka Beijing duck, as I had seen it on yelp as well as online reviews. I had high anticipation, for this came to the table was not Peking duck. It was just a roast duck. When the employee started slicing, he also did not slice it to only include skin and first layer of fat, and he just started slicing away at it and gave us huge chunks of meat and almost every part of the duck.
This is not an authentic Peking duck experience. The baos arrived at the table, barely room temperature. In fact cold and tough to pry open. When we bit into the pieces of duck on the table, it was confirmed it was roast duck. There is nothing crispy about the skin at all.
The second dish came out as soup and the third dish We selected a fried rice.
You can tell by the photos we ordered quite a bit of food, including another fried rice, wonton soup, a chicken corn soup, beef chow fun as well as pork chops.
Everything tasted OK nothing really stood out though.
This place is not cheap. It is actually quite expensive and and I would rather have gone to Chinatown for a more authentic experience.
I still give it four stars because I do respect their longevity and tenure as well as their previous recognitions and awards.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Xu A.Grand Rapids, MI14117380Mar 15, 2024
We were in town for my cousin's baby shower and they took our whole group to Sun Wah. I've never had duck dinner and cannot believe I've been missing out on this amazing meal my whole life!
My cousin made 7pm reservations on a Friday for our group of 7 adults and 5 kids. We were seated once our whole group arrived. The round tables are huge and the lazy Susan in the middle of the table was perfect for our family style dining. We immediately put in for 2 duck dinners upon being seated. We also got a few appetizers to start, my favorite being the stir fried eggplant! Every app came out quickly and we enjoyed it with their delicious house made chili sauce (caution: it burns your throat!). Then, we waited an hour for our Peking duck. We ended up having to walk up to the host stand to ask about the delay because no one came around to inform us of how epically busy they were. Our waters were bone dry at this point and all the kids had been granted screen time.
Finally our duck came out and it was carved at the table. So juicy and flavorful and perfectly cooked. I'd like to say it was worth the wait, but it only happened a week ago, so I'm still a salty Sally about it. It really was worth the wait though. They make fried rice, soup and noodles out of the duck carcass. Those came out pretty fast after the duck carving.
And then, we waited for our check. And then, we waited for them to run our cards (2). And then, they took our cash tip from the table. And then, they cleared the table. At this point, we knew promptness was not a word they respected, so we walked up to the host stand again. They said there was only 1 person who ran the credit cards...and she was very busy carving ducks. So, we asked for our cards, gave them cash and left feeling torn about how we felt about this place! It was amazing food, but the service fell far beyond sub par. 5 stars for food. 0 for service. Equals: 2.5 stars. Sorry, Sun Wah!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Feb 22, 2024
So my bf and I came in due to a lot of people raving about their duck. We ordered a few things, their BBQ buns, Peking duck, w/ medium rice, and Singapore noodles.
Disclaimer: menu isn't the correct prices.
there were two Asian servers, one of them was really impatient and the other one was super patient and nice with us. I felt rushed trying to order with one of their employees, but the other one was so sweet and even tried to help me with ordering food items.
Not sure how all my entrees came back before my buns even tho they're appetizers, but I understand that it happens.
8.7/10 Singapore noodles - has great amount of protein and veggies, not too much noodles. It does have a spice/kick go it which I throughout enjoyed. This could probably fill 2 people on its own without anything else.
6.5/10 BBQ buns - it was okay. It wasn't anything special and I've defintely had so much better elsewhere. Their buns were soft, but the BBQ wasn't strong in flavor. I wished ir was juicy but it's not.
8.5/10 duck- it was good duck. It was a good portion size and it was good in flavor. We ordered rice to eat with the meat. It had a nice amount of oil to salt/savory flavor. They do have a dinner there you can order and have a lot more food with it. The sauce is really good with rice!
I like this place, I just wish I had better service and food should come out accordingly. Overall it's good. I do recommend their duck if you're craving some duck.
There's street parking that you can pay for.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - 16693153Jan 6, 2024
Like many others have mentioned in their reviews, the off menu Bejing Duck Dinner is the star of the show on this menu. A generous serving of an entire duck, duck soup, and duck fried rice served with appropriate sauces and bao buns. It is delicious and used to be for reservations only, but lately I've gotten so much mixed feedback from this establishment and their staff, I'm not sure what to believe. Know this: the duck is 5/5, the drinks are pretty good as well, but the service is confusing at best and just downright rude at times.
On three different occasions in the last few months I've wanted to reserve a table on a Friday or Saturday night to bring visitors (4 person party max). The forst time I called was right before Friday dinner rush, the woman said they were getting busy and ask me to call back the next day for reservations. That I understood, I called at a bad time it seemed and rather last minute. I was still somewhat confused by this though because the first several times I'd dined there a reservation for the duck dinner was required (and even their website said so and still does).
The next two times, I was smarter. Calling to book a reservation on the Wednesday for a Friday meal and early Friday for a Saturday meal. Unfortunately, both times I was met with rudeness and told they don't take reservations. I was confused. I'd eaten there previously only because I was able to get a reservation for the duck. When I tried to clarify with the woman on the phone she said again they don't reservations. To say the least, I was dissuaded from driving to uptown to press my luck.
I will give this place a try again. Likely in the winter months when it might be less busy.
TLDR: off menu duck is phenomenal and a must order, but try it on a weekday if possible. Despite the great food, service leaves a lot to be desired.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 18, 2023
The Beijing duck dinner ($70) is a MUST. It's an off menu item that you have to call ahead and reserve.
A lot of the reviews on here say that a duck is supposed to serve 4 people with plenty of leftovers but we nearly finished the duck between just the two of us. The roasted crispy skinned duck is wheeled over glistening in all its glory and is then carved table side, which is super cool to see! You get 6 pillowy baos along with pickled daikon, carrots and scallions to garnish. Drizzle on some of their house blend hoisin and you have some delicious, tender and juicy duck baos.
Once the duck is done being carved, they wheel away the meaty carcass to be made into a duck fried rice. When there is nothing left but bones they make it into a wintermelon duck broth soup.
The star of the show is the roasted duck of course! We absolutely loved the duck baos. The fried rice is sizzling hot and flavorful. The chili oil they have at each table is extremely hot so be careful, but it has really great flavor. The soup is piping hot and perfect for this cold weather, although it's more mild in terms of flavor.
We came at 7 on a rainy Saturday and the place was packed and there were ducks being wheeled around everywhere, it was truly a great sight to see. Can't wait to come back!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 2, 2023
Sun Wah BBQ has been serving up delicious Hong Kong style BBQ dishes in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago since 1987.
This James Beard Award winning restaurant is known for their off-menu Beijing (Peking) Duck, which should be reserved days ahead of time.
Carved table side and served with thinly sliced veggies, a sweet and savory sauce, and pillowy soft bao for making the perfect duck buns. This dinner comes with a whole roasted duck, duck soup, and duck fried rice.
Bring some hungry friends and you'll still take food home after this feast!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - 6982412Oct 30, 2023
An iconic Chicago restaurant in the Argyle area, that's been around longer than I've been born. As a kid I came here with my parents often. I remember their old, small location was around the corner. You would see the cooked bbq meats hanging through the window, and the butcher (owner) chop away and packaging orders. A small shop that was flooded with dine in and take out, and people flooding the counter to put their duck or bbq pork orders. Our usual order was 2 ducks and 2lbs of bbq pork.
When they opened a bigger location I was so excited! The Beijing Duck meal is our favorite! The duck is carved table side and is presented nicely. Included in the meal is duck soup, duck fried rice, bao buns, veggies, and hoisin sauce. So much food for your money, and we had left overs too. The stir fried eggplant is another fav. Served with garlic and delicious light gravy makes it an epic meal.
Definitely suggest making reservations if you're going for dinner, and let them know ahead of time if you want the Beijing duck dinner. It's first come first serve!Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 1 - Feb 12, 2024
Came with a group of 13 to celebrate Lunar New Year and waited an extra 30 minutes despite making a reservation at 6:30 pm. Iconic in the city and best known for the Peking duck dinner (tip is to call in advance and reserve x amount of ducks for your reservation; each duck serves 3-4 people depending on how much people eat). Each duck dinner comes with carved duck, bao, the option of duck fried rice or noodles, and duck soup. The bao was steaming and pillowy when we got it and I loved nestling slices of duck topped off with marinated radish and dollops of plum sauce into the bun. The soup was a good juxtaposition against the rich food and the broth was flavorful and light. Several friends and I agreed the rice in the fried rice dish was undercooked and wasn't as good as previous times.
We ordered additional veggies (broccoli and eggplant) and crispy pork in addition to 3 duck dinners and this seemed to satiate everyone.
The ambiance is minimal to say the least and service a chaotic experience of hailing down whoever will look your way. Overall, a fun one of a kind experience that will have you dreaming of Peking duck the night of.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1
