Been here a couple of times. Every time I have played frisbee golf. Very cheap to play. Not sure I would play regular golf here but it couldn't hurt my golf short game. I need the practice.
A fun course with a variety of frisbee golf basket locations. Still learning the game. Thought the game was pretty straight forward at first but playing a couple times. I am finding out there is more involved. Right now I am hooked on this game. More casual than regular golf but takes some skill to master. Can't wait to go again.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - May 12, 2014Updated review
UPDATE:
They're doing a great job trying to fix up the course. Some of the fairways leave a lot to be desired. After golfing yesterday the greens were slow but well groomed and very green. They're replanting the tee boxes so they'll look fantastic soon. I also noted little fertilizer/plant food pellets in the fairway. I'm glad this course is starting to spruce things up a bit. It's a fun course to play.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Dec 28, 2013Previous reviewAll in all a great place. I like to go here when im sick of the driving range and don't have enough time for 18 holes. You can play the 9 hole course in about an hour if there is nobody else ahead of you.
They are currently reseeding the tees. The greens are in pretty good shape. The fairways do leave a lot to be desired. With that said thr last few times I have played here it has been PACKED.
A word of warning: this is a very low key course and a lot of people lack etiquette. Today I almost got nailed by an errant line drive and did not hear a FORE.
Do the price and accessibility you really can't beat this course. - Erick V.San Diego, CA591813Jul 28, 2015
I'm writing this review for their efforts to improve the course and my experience today 7/28/15.
First of all, I bought an $18 Groupon that was for two. Included 9 holes, two buckets of golf balls for their small golf range, and two burgers. That's an AMAZING DEAL, if you ask me.
Don't try and compare this golf course to the other executive pricier courses.
Range: Is small but accessible enough for it you to get your swing on.
Putting practice: Their putting practice area is good, but can use some work. For the price you pay, its def good. As they start fixing it, the price will probably go up but its the rule of thumb.
The 9 hole, par three course is under construction, it sounds bad, but its actually a good thing. It has so much potential. Even though there is construction stuff around some holes, they are all still playable for the price you pay.
I'm a beginner golfer and this course is perfect to get my game up, and the price is unbeatable. The two burgers that came with the Groupon are your classy outdoor grilled burgers. Not great tasting, but eatable after 9 rounds of golf. The staff is very friendly and the course isn't too packed. This allows beginners to take their time in each course.
Overall I give this place 4 stars based on the effort to fix the course and the unbeatable Groupon. I'll def be coming back to step my game up.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Monica B.Austin, TX03Apr 16, 2017
My husband and I play the course regularly. He's a new golfer and I'm always good for a short game.
The course is cheap to play - $6 for 9 holes. Each of the holes is 3-4 par. The greens are OK and the rest of the course is a good place to skills-build, since the fairways are narrow and there's not a lot of room for error. The rough is rough so bring extra balls if you're not precise in your driving.
The city council hasn't been supportive of the owners (the water rates have gone through the roof since the drought and it's gotten nearly impossible to keep up good course conditions). Instead, the city is being obstructive and is considering using the land to create a likely-unused park. Typical bad townie governance is acting short-sighted as ever. They must never come to the course, since every time we play, there are a ton of others playing disc golf, soccer golf and ball golf. It's pretty well-used and regularly so.
I like the ability to play regularly on the cheap and I think it's a good addition to the town. Hopefully, the City gets their act together and realizes they've got a good thing, used by adults and kids to get outside and do something fun together.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dan D.Newport Beach, CA781888Jul 20, 2015
9 holes, which I have only played disc golf on. Conditions are not great for regular golf, but fine for disc golf. Pretty fun since it is not too busy. Tuesday is doubles night.
Cost: $6
Pros: Longer than other 9 hole courses I've played. Not busy.
Cons: It's tough to pay twice what Morley is for a course not better. They are doing some construction now, but hopefully that means it will be getting better. They have 2 signs total for all the holes, it's really annoying to have to see where you have to go.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Albert W.Bellevue, WA728758952Jul 17, 2011
They realize they're not the highest quality 9-hole course around, and that's why they bill themselves as "the friendliest golf course around". For a discount par 3 course in their low price range though, their fields are actually in very reasonable condition. Sure, there's the occasional brown patch, torn up tee box, and broken ball washer, but it's a lot better than some of the other discount courses in San Diego county. The course is also shared with disc golfers, and it doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of them here compared to regular golfers.
The drawbacks of having so many kids playing the course is that there's a lot more errant balls, the pace of play is slower, and it seems that nobody on this course actually yells "FORE!" when a ball (or frisbee?) flies your way. This suits our hero's appetite for danger perfectly.
There's also a deli for lunch, but it's not all that great for food. Their $6 hamburgers come overloaded with too much mayo/ketchup/mustard if you ask for it.
PROS:
- Really cheap! $10 for nine holes, and $4 extra for a second play through.
- Very beginner and child friendly course.
- No water hazards, so it's pretty tough to lose a ball. Minimal sand traps too. The worst you have to worry about is trees.
CONS:
- Their deli leaves much to be desired.
- Golfers and disc golfers share the field.
- The course is fairly hilly and there's a lot of elevation change so it's quite a trek to get through 9 holes.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Adam S.Phoenix, AZ146424Aug 17, 2009
Played this course for the first time last Saturday and was pleasantly surprised with the laid-back feel and low amount of traffic on the course. It's perfect for beginners (read: me) because of the lack of water traps. This fact greatly reduced the number of balls I lost due to less than stellar drives. I lose a lot of golf balls!
The cost to play is only $10 for nine holes which is fairly reasonable. I didn't see any golf carts, though the tight proximity of each of the holes only warranted a small amount of walking. The course does have a lot of height variation which makes for some interesting drives.
As others have mentioned, this course can definitely be played with only a wedge and a putter. I really wanted to try out my new driver but alas, had I used it, I probably would have launched a ball onto the 15.
The course is in decidedly mediocre shape. The teeing areas in all but the last two holes are little more than dirt patches with tufts of stomped on crab grass. The putting greens were all in decent shape, so I can't complain too much.
A note about the deli: The cashier is often times the deli boy as well. Combining these two tasks mean anything you order will take FOREVER! It literally took forty-five minutes to get our four sandwiches as the kid behind the counter had to stop making our sandwiches, wash his hands and ring up each new customer who came into the clubhouse.
Overall, I really like this course and will definitely play here again.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jacob H.San Diego, CA96148147Aug 18, 2011
Bottom Line Up Front: This course is slightly dangerous to play on. Bring a helmet and your willingness to walk up and down small slopes.
Course Condition:
The course conditions would be about poor to below average for any normal par 72 course in San Diego. However, given that this is a municipal 9 hole course, it's probably closer to being fair. Keep in mind that the course doesn't cost that much to play, and is only a par-3 course for every hole. In addition, there is a frisbee golf course that runs on each hole of this course.
Some of the holes run true, most don't. The speed on each green is different. Don't expect championship quality grass either. This is, after all, just a municipal course.
Course Layout:
This course borders on being dangerous to play. Holes line up next to each other, providing ample opportunity for a golfer to hit another golfer. There are also parts of the course requiring golfers to cross the path of other oncoming golfers, just to get to the next tee box.
Standing on hole 1, errant shots easily make their way to tee box 2. Firing on to hole 6, a slice will make its way to tee box 7. Firing on to hole 7, slices make their way to golfers walking to hole 6. Finishing hole 7, and moving on to the tee box of hole 8 requires that you cross the line of fire for hole 6.
Course Challenge:
The greens are fairly small, making precision sand wedges really count. The course is not flat by any means, and requires that you walk up and down to the next tee box. There are no golf carts here, so being fit enough to maintain your heart rates for the next hole is entertaining.
Overall:
This is a fun little course, great for beginners and those that don't want to sit in a cart. Most holes are within a sand wedge shot. Don't expect championship quality, but do expect to play for fun. Bring sunblock and a hat. It gets a little steamy in La Mesa.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ben R.San Diego, CA38Jun 24, 2008
I don't play golf at Sun Valley but I do go there to play disc golf. It's a 9 hole course for both sports and most of the disc golf baskets are easily spotted beyond the greens.
The rates are reasonable for disc golf, $5 for 18 holes. Some may complain that it's more expensive than Morley Field near Balboa Park but one of the greatest things about Sun Valley is there are nowhere near as many people as there are at Morley on any given day. And the ball golfers are usually courteous and will let you play through. I normally get alot of questions from ball golfers as to the difference in the discs. They also have a decent selection of Innova discs for sale.
In September, the course shuts down for a weekend for the Sun Valley Open. Disc golf players from all over the country travel to play in this PDGA event.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
