I had been wanting to try this place, and since its out of my general route, i had to make a special trip to check it out.
The first time i showed up, it was 4 pm and the place was closed. No signs on the door, other than the posted hours (of which i was there during). I left frustrated, but opted to try again when i found myself in the area.
The second time, i showed up, it was around 1 pm, and the same exact experience. Closed. Alrighty, this clearly wasnt meant to be.
Being the girl scout that I am...i figured the third time would be the charm. It was 11 am, and i thought, i drove all the way here (yes, i should have called, but i was in the area again) lets try this one more time.
Im now asking myself why. Im a dessert girl, and grew up in the land of sugarplums and things that make you want more. This is NOT that substitute for things that make you want more.
We were greeted when we walked in with " what would you like" Ummm, i thought to myself, we just walked in. We replied, we will look and let you know. In an instant, the over zealous counter help disappeared.
At 11 am, there wasnt much to select from. Shouldnt the shelves be filled with eye popping, make your mouth water, yummy looking creations?
The dozen or so cupcakes looked like something i would have baked when i was 8. Unappealing at best. The bottom shelf had three types of unlabeled cookies. We selected two of them; a sprinkle cookie and a sugar cookie. We were told that it wasnt a sugar cookie, but cinnamon sugar. Okay...it was a sugar cookie by the way. Cinnamon never touched that batter.
Then we selected a cookie bar. The selection looked like something that had been sitting there for days. I casually asked if they baked daily, and the curt response was " yeah". Again, if items were labeled, we wouldnt have had to ask what the various bars were. We selected something that we were told had caramel and chocolate. Im still looking for the caramel. If you find it, please return it to me.
I had asked if i could take pictures, and was told " no, we dont allow that". Groovy, i get it.
We left to enjoy our late morning treats. Im still asking myself why.
The cookies were bland and hard like cement. If that was fresh, id hate to see them at several days old.
The wanna be chocolate/missing caramel bar lacked flavor, and tasted frozen. Yes, frozen. i couldnt get past two bites, and tossed it back in the bag. We had asked for napkins before we left, and we were told that they didnt have any. I totally love using my clothes as a replacement for a napkin.
Maybe their pre-ordered cakes etc are better, but this is not the walk in bakery that many of us look for, to grab those thoughtful treats to take into the office, or that last minute dessert on the way to a friends house for dinner.
The fact that i left my treat in the car all day (a hot car is perfect for thawing out a dessert) and it did little to help with that texture and flavor.
My advice... drive on by.Helpful 41Thanks 0Love this 39Oh no 0 - Rocio K.Sacramento, CA231183987Apr 12, 2016
This place smells like what I imagine heaven to smell like.
I have only been here once but I think this is my favorite bakery now! They have cupcakes, brownies, cakes, pies, lemon bars, cookies, they have it all.
Marci and Lori, the owners, are really nice and they know their customers. I wanted to get my boss something for his birthday but I didn't know what he liked, so I told the ladies who my boss was and they knew just what he liked.
I got my self a lemon bar, cost $2.50. It was the best lemon bar I've ever tasted, I almost felt bad sharing it with my girlfriend cause I wanted it all for my self.
I can't wait for the next excuse to head to Sugar Mama's and get my self a little treat.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Ryah B.West Sacramento, CA19610313May 8, 2017
I read awesome reviews and was so excited to try this place.
Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed and even though I had set my expectations high, and felt let down, I still tried to give the benefit of the doubt after all.
The cookies were mediocre at best. I would rather eat store-bought since these tasted like shortening instead of real butter usage.
The brownie bar was really good. I think there was something with cheesecake in it as well. Those were pretty good if you like chocolate.
The muffins were incredibly dry.
There weren't enough positives here to make me return. Plus everything was overpriced for what they were.
I'm hoping that whoever helped me was just having a bad day because if that's how all customers are greeted/treated then I'm not sure they'll stay in business long. It looked like she hated her job and she spoke to me like I was an inconvenience to have in the store. I mentioned that I had not been in before so I needed a moment to look, but also asked for recommendations.
The lady's answers were short and accompanied by heavy sighs.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ceudi G.Hercules, CA3595Apr 13, 2017
Our wedding coordinator referred us to Sugar Mama's and I'm glad that he did. They have exceptional customer service, were flexible when scheduling our tastings and allowed us to bring guests to our tasting. They brought out dozens of treats for us to taste and take home and just overall showed us the royal treatment. We decided to do a fake cake with only one real layer and a full dessert table. They did an amazing job with all of the desserts and set up and the cake was not only beautiful but it was delicious and exactly what we wanted based on the picture we gave them. I highly recommend using them for any event, their desserts are just amazing and delicious!!! Lori is wonderful!

Great service! First time going, and their price points were reasonable. Quality of food - AMAZING!
Would definitely go back! I recommend to everyone! They also have gluten-free &/or dairy-free options (I think you have to special order those though.)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mr. S.Sacramento, CA305911Mar 3, 2016
I've had a few deserts from this place now and I have to say that they LOVE sugar. If you LOVE sugar then this is your place. If you have no fears of type 2 diabetes then this is your place. You can't just love sugar, you have to be in love with it. They put sugar on their sugar. They put sugar - then add more sugar. Haven't had enough sugar? They add even more. This is sweeter than sweet. It's sweet sugary sugar of all sugars and they HATE flavor. It's a seething hate for flavor. Flavor has no place here. Where will you find flavor? Not at SUGAR Mama's Bakery. There, it's even in the name... sugar. SUGAR. SUGAR!!!
Here's how I know.
I love love love FoodJets. I have had several of the SUGAR Mama's deserts and they all taste like one thing... wait for it... SUGAR.
Just take my foot already. Whack it off with a chainsaw. I don't need it. It's why I have two. It's like having a spare for when the revolting SUGAR Mama's "whoopie pie" stabs me in the glands. Repeatedly.
Today is no exception. This gawd awful "Almond Cake". Cake, I guess, topped with what could only be described as concentrated SUGAR grease.
Please try SUGAR Mama's. But I warn you, use a teaspoon, because there's a sinister looking character behind you with a hacksaw ready to take your foot.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Amanda J.Sacramento, CA76744Mar 28, 2016Updated review
I used this place for "wolf" brownies. Lol yes you heard me right! My son's school was having a three piggy Oprah and I was assigned wolf brownies!!! I panicked, but then I remembered this cute little place that I used before for my daughter's bridal shower. So far I have used them for 2 events and I love them!!! Everyone loves the treats I bring thanks to them. I'm going by their shop tomorrow, because I'm in charge of a baby shower cake!! Anyways the brownies were super cute and moist and delicious!!! Thanks ladies!

They have other baked goods you can come in and buy. Everything looks great. The cookies I ordered were a big hit at the bridal shower I threw. I will definitely recommend them. - May 5, 2016
I have to say hats off to the bakers and decorators at Sugar Mama's! I ordered custom bowtie cookies for an event for my son and they were VERY PRETTY and tasted delicious. Our guest were eating them immediately and then attempting to take other peoples. They were so good! The detail was wonderful with his initials written on the bow ties! I am so pleased I will be there this week to order graduation cookies.

Lori and Marci always make me feel like I am part of the family I am greeted with hugs and kisses. We catch up on our families and then the best part, get to buy the most lovely and amazing treats.
They are masters of balancing a wonderful bakery with the best ever customer service.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Nov 29, 2014Previous reviewSimply the friendliest Bakery I have ever been to!
