Kocina's Thrasher Plate is one of my favorite dishes in Rochester.
Loosely inspired by the Garbage Plate, it consists of chopped-up pieces of beer-battered shrimp, grilled steak and bacon over a bed of sushi rice garnished with cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers. There is also a drizzle of sweet Japanese mayo and mild Sriracha.
$13 well spent. For most, the portions are big enough for 2 meals.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Larz H.Rochester, NY01Apr 24, 2024
i was accompanying a Military Service Dog and they were immediately rude and disrespectful and said "even though those are service dogs this is a Restaurnt and they cant be in here you can take it to go but you cant be in here." anyone with a service animal of any kind or a disability this is Not a welcoming place for us. it is illegal to refuse any sort of service animal. do not eat here.

3.5 stars. What a quirky and fun restaurant name. This is a place i have been meaning to check out for awhile. This is a Latin-fusion sushi place with a very interesting menu. Its located in a tiny little area with a few restaurants and a parking nightmare to navigate in and out of. There's a little area in the restaurant that you order at. We got some items to go (may consider ordering ahead next time via phone so we wouldn't have to wait). We tried the trasher marino (love that they have their own version of the garbage plate that sounds so much more delicious) as well as a three roll combo that was chef's choice of the day.
4 stars for the trasher marino. Fish was fresh and it was a fun fusion dish. I'm glad I had it and it was fine considering Rochester doesn't have too much to offer in the ways of sushi. The other 3 rolls were unfortunately a bit disappointing (rice was hard) and the rolls were just okay.
May stop back sometime for a trasher plate and they're nice people, but nothing that stood out and wowed me.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tori C.Brockport, NY051Aug 30, 2023
Zero stars from the University of Rochester. We wouldn't know how the food is because they cancelled their food truck on the University of Rochester TWICE with no notice. These were pre-scheduled lunches with this food truck. The first time they no-showed without any warning and said we were supposed to confirm after we had already confirmed a month prior. This left dozens of nurses, doctors, and staff with no lunches.
The second time they said to make sure to confirm with them one week prior. We have been calling, leaving voicemails and emails for one week with no answer.
Finally one day before the food truck is supposed to come we get through to the owner and we state we are calling and have been calling for a week to confirm. He states that they are cancelling. He also states that another employee should've called to cancel. Well they NEVER DID. He had the email addresses and phone numbers of the staff organizing this and he could've emailed or called us to cancel but none of us have any missed calls or emails so we know he just never did.
Once again our staff is left with no lunches and we are scrambling trying to make sure to reach out to everyone to bring their own lunch. How do you run a business this way? Why not tell us a week or a month ago?? Clearly you are having issues with staffing, professionalism, and the ability to communicate to your community. We work tirelessly in this medical institution to provide to our patients and we try to have fun lunches once in awhile and now have been left high and dry by this Stingray Sushifusion twice. The University of Rochester will not be using this company again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jo V.Federal Way, WA01Oct 10, 2023
I heard about this place via Tiktok all the way over here in Seattle and decided we had to try it while in Rochester, NY.
We went to tons of restaurants while over there but this was our hands down favorite.
The place is tiny and designed for takeout so dont complain about it when you review about it!
But man, the poke bowls, garbage plates, the sushi... so so good.

Wow! This place is a jewel. Just a super delicious explosion of flavors ... if you like delighting your taste buds - this is a must try. We had The Trasher Marino -- fish & salad veggies in a yummy sauce - Ike a thousand island kind of concoction.
And the Pica Spicy Tuna Roll and the Dominican Roll we perfectly seasoned and a thing of beauty. We will be back!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Diamond M.Los Angeles, CA04834Nov 9, 2022
I was introduced to this restaurant by a family member, and it's difficult to explain how amazing the experience of the food is! You'll have to try it to understand what I mean; you're welcome in advance. The Trasher Del Campo is my favorite dish. The ingredients are fresh, and the quality holds for leftovers. Additionally, the staff at Kocina privilege the quality of customer service provided as much as the quality of the food served. We had a delivery driver forget an ordered item and the staff quickly worked to remedy the situation.
I highly recommend this restaurant and cannot say enough good things about it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 35593Nov 1, 2021
This sushi fusion place is amazing. They have rolls that are so unique and very delicious. Personally, I love the trasher plates because there is so much food and it's so good. They also have amazing poké bowls. The employees are very nice and accommodating and I order from here often. Very very delicious!!

I first tried their food truck at the Food truck Rodeos at the public market. Which as you know is only April-September and the last Wednesday of the month. I was so excited when they opened there own place because now I can get them anytime I want. Me and my kids Love the "Trasher Plate".. it's sushi rice topped with beer battered shrimp, grilled steak, bacon, cucumbers, tomatoes, scallions, sweet bell peppers, fried garlic, onion crunches, ponzu, ginger mayo, sriracha, and stingray sauce. It has so many flavors and textures. From sweet to savory, to soft and crunchy. Your palate will be amazed. They have 3 other versions of the trasher plate. One all meat (Del Campo), all seafood ( Trasher Marino) and no meat or vegetarian ( Quinoa Trasher) but the one I always get is the original which has it all .. lol! Their place is very clean. You can take it to go or eat inside. You gotta check them out.

Wow.... if you haven't tried this place, you need to.... ASAP! Between the people that work there, the branding, and the food itself, it's a must try in the Rochester area.
I'm always skeptical when restaurants remake their own version of the garbage plate, but this place knocked it out of the park! I got the Original Trasher Plate. This includes a base of sushi rice, topped with grilled steak, beer battered shrimp, bacon, cucumbers, tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, fried garlic, onion crunches, and a bunch of sauces that are just out of this world. And all for $11!!! You can't go wrong if you decide to go with this dish.
Due to COVID, you are unable to eat inside, which forced me and my buddies to eat out of the back of my Jeep. The workers are so nice, they brought us all ( 3 of us) free waters during our meal and let us know that they'd be opening up the seating in the next month (it's currently May 13th 2021). And I'll be back to take them up on it.
If you want food that is a nice fusion between Japanese and Latin American cuisine, this is the place. And if you aren't looking for that, then you just haven't tried it yet. Go here and you won't regret it. You'll actually wonder why it took you this long to find it. Just look for the bright blue truck!Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0
