If you're looking for a place to go chill after work and sit outside with a ridiculously large glass of beer, then look no further. Bierhaus is the place for you!
Once you walk in, you place your order at the counter and they will hand you your beer and if you ordered food, they will hand you a number and they will take it to your table. The beers come in two sizes here, 0.5 L or 1.0 L and all of them are reasonably priced.
I am definitely going to try out the food next time! The pretzel looked amazing.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 7781350492Mar 29, 2018
This is an awesome place to chill after work. They rotate tapa frequently and they have a wide variety of drinks to choose from (beers, ciders, and wine).
They have plenty of outdoor seating and indoor seating for about 30! Kick it with co workers during happy hour for $1 off beers!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nov 12, 2017
You'll never get the best "biergarten" experience unless you're in Germany so let's just acknowledge that fact. Bierhaus DOES try hard. They get some things right: the all wood, communal bench seating, the (small) outdoor patio complete with heat lamps, a nice compact beer selection and some wine/non alcoholic drinks for other folks who are not into brewskis.
Order these: the crisp and refreshing Paulaner Hefeweizen, the nutty Six River Macadamia Nut porter, the sparkling grapefruit tasting Stiegl Radler and a medium bodied, drinkable red wine blend from JJ
Skip the food: their doner kebaop is severely lacking in seasoning sans for the white sauce and is priced $10, the schntizel is bready but decent, the fries could've been more consistent: we had several orders and they all varied in seasoning. I like their currywurst though! not authentic like Berlin, but this one was actually served with real tomato ketchup.Helpful 16Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0 - Sep 30, 2018
how befitting it is to write this review in the midst of oktoberfest! i've been here twice, once for afternoon drinks, once for a large group dinner...not much to report on the drinks bit, but the large group dinner with my friends was a lot of fun, and having 3 of the patio tables reserved for our group was great, and convenient, making it easy to hop from one table to another to converse with everyone in the group.
when you order your drinks at the bar, you can also order your food/meal, pay for it, and they bring it to your table...pretty simple. i ordered the green goddess garden salad ($13) with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, sunflower kernels, feta, chickpea salad, and pickled cabbage. this was a really refreshing salad, perfect for a warm summer evening, and i took my time enjoying every bite of this very filling salad.
i'm kinda sad that this very popular and friendly joint may close, but i'm hoping they'll find a way to stay open and continue serving up great food & drink and providing a friendly, neighborhood place to hang out for mountain view residents and other silicon valley visitors alike.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 11Oh no 0 - D.wight L.East Bay, CA64415335093Sep 24, 2018
Not a huge fan. Not a fan of the order at the front, then sit concept. For example, we ordered our first rounds and some food to munch on. We sat, we munched and we finished our first pints. When it came to consider a second round, there was now a line 12 deep that went out the front door. So guess what? We left and had our second beer elsewhere.
I even considered getting my 2nd beer along with my 1st, but talked myself out of it. First I think I've outlasted my years where double fisting should even be an option. Secondly, my back up beer would of sat there for at least 15-20 minutes just getting warmer and warmer, thus less optimum.
The place also is 100% communal tables/seating. Most times I don't mind that, but to have no or little choice kinda irks me. And this place gets busy, so get used to squeezing into picnic bench style seating. The bigger your group, the harder it will be for everybody to sit together. Unless you come off hours.
They of course had some German brews, but not as much as I would expect given their name. Maybe 10 or less on draft. Maybe another 6 or so not devoted to German brews. But I think they have bottles, so that may add to their list. They do serve it proper in either half or full litres, so I am giving them props for that.
Schnitzel Plate ($18/4*) They do serve up a nicely executed schnitzel. Decent portion of thin pork cutlet, breaded properly and fried to crunchy golden. Spaetzle is legit, with it being sautéed in brown butter. No sauce/variation so it is pretty plain. I don't mind it, but some might differ.
Meat Cheese Plate ($18/4*) Great platter to pair with beer. Bratwurst very nice with a grilled crisp exterior. Sliced ham was super nice, being the boiled/baked variety versus dry cure. It reminded me of mom's Christmas ham, just minus the crackly crust.
The cheeses were regular gouda and some aged cheddar that was really good/funky. Aged enough that it was starting to take on Parmesan-like qualities. Really good with beer.
The pretzel however was too dough-y/bread-y for me. It is huge, so good for a group I guess. Olives were unique, being very green and not super briny. Don't think I've ever had an olive quite like it. Braised red cabbage had a tartness and spicing that again I don't think I've ever had. Very unique, therefore well received.
So the food was more than satisfactory. I just wished I didn't have to schlep it in line and pull out the wallet again, every time I got something else. I'm the kind of guy that just likes to sit down and unwind, especially after a work day. Any place that doesn't make that conducive, will get filtered when it comes to pulling the trigger on a decision.Helpful 12Thanks 0Love this 12Oh no 0 - Aug 28, 2017
I don't drink, so this is a food rating only. I only come here due to friends.
German-inspired bar food is the offering. All food is of little quantity and expensive.
I had cheese fries with lamb+beef shawarma on it. It was good but very little quantity. I ate it as a meal, but its not even large enough for sharing.
Another time, I had one of their salads...and its alright.
My friends got the Schnitzel Sandwich and that actually looks pretty good. I'll probably get that next time.
I've only sat outdoors in the summer so its pretty nice outside.
I will never come here on my own without friends wanting to come here.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 8, 2016
Good place to get diff type of beer. Lot of places to seat but it gets pretty loud. Good place to hang out with friends and yell at each other.
Very good place to play pokemon go. Just sit and drink beer and spin the pokespot.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 394489638Sep 27, 2018
Check this place out before it closes down in a few days!
Big beers, pretzels aren't really worth it but if you need carbies go crazy, and people bring dogs (YES)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dec 1, 2017
I'm not feeling it; Bierhaus is just mediocre.
Don't get me wrong - I love the idea: A German-style biergarten in the heart of Mountain View; and it's dog-friendly too. I wish every neighborhood had their own version.
But I've been spoiled by my beloved Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City, which is so much better than this place it would take me all day to tell you. Note: I won't do that, but the curious can check the GHS reviews (https://www.yelp.com/biz/gourmet-haus-staudt-gifts-and-cafe-redwood-city?hrid=rJeURb0m89Pg3_Bigkq8Aw&utm_campaign=www_review_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct))
I've been to Bierhaus twice now, but have been underwhelmed both times. They have over a dozen beers on tap, with an attempt to capture several different German styles, plus a smattering of American ones, but there's not a lot of depth here. The staff here also don't seem to know their beer. I've asked specific questions about some of their offerings, and been met with shrugs; or with that standard, unhelpful phrase: "People seem to like it". Most true beer spots do better than this. On the other hand, Bierhaus does get kudos for having my favorite Schwarzbier on the menu (Kostritzer). An extra star for that.
The only food I tried here was the pretzel with mustard ($4), and it was awful. Not only was it small (less than 5 inches across), it also looked and tasted like it was pulled out of a freezer bag the day before. (For the real deal, Gourmet Haus Staudt will serve you a hot, fresh-baked, homemade version for twice the cost; four times the size; and ten times the deliciousness).
The vibe here is also a little lacking, at least for me. Being partly open to the street, and on a busy corner, there's no feel of seclusion and escape that other biergartens can offer. The interior space is also somewhat stark and uninviting.
By itself, if it was a one-of-a-kind spot, Bierhaus might get 4 stars from me for attempting to bring a little of Germany to Silicon Valley. But it turns out it's not the only place of its kind. And I always grade on a curve.Helpful 16Thanks 0Love this 12Oh no 0 - Sai J.Mountain View, CA50225273Sep 18, 2018
I love the place more than their food or beers. Beer garden-ish seating on the patio. Decent pretzels and sausages. Would not recommend the spatzle or the sauerkraut though. The sausage and curry fries are good too. Good beers!
I recommend saving a table before hand if you are a group if at least 8. The place gets crowded in the evenings!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
