Food is great and incredibly cheap. As other Yelpers have noted, the service is inconsistent. It's better to come during the week than the weekdays, as the place is constantly packed on the weekends. Regardless, I will gladly drive here from Slidell to eat here.

We were excited to see a Steak n Shake for I haven't been to one in a few years. It must have been a crazy busy day cause all the tables were dirty and the servers looked worn out. But that didn't bother us...we understand and waited till a table was cleaned up. Our server was super nice. I had no problem with the service. What i was disappointed in was the actual food. It looked nothing like the pictures featured on the menu. It was a lot smaller and kinda messy looking. It was unappetizing. The fries were ok...
My husband really didn't enjoy his Western BBQ burger. It was missing a key ingredient...BBQ sauce. It's like they forgot. Oh well...We can try again next time and see if it would be better. The shake was ok...nothing special that I can't get at Sonic for a cheaper price.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Cas T.Zachary, LA21366149Jul 4, 2022
I LOVE S&S, but this location was subpar at best. The doors were locked and the drive-thru people weren't in a hurry. Get to the window and see a little kid (maybe 5 to 8 yrs old) behind the counter doing things. I don't know what my patties were, but they definitely weren't Frisco burger patties.

I changed my mind on what kind of hamburger I wanted. I asked the woman at the drive in if I could switch out the the cheeseburger I had for a different kind of burger. Bottom line she refused. But the way she went about not doing it was in a bizarre like I'm hearing you but not really. When I reminded her I could just switch out the burger, she was incensed because you know each burger is custom made- now that's a joke! I'm mean this is a drive through burger joint. Nothing more. And this is the last visit I make to Steak and Shake though (anywhere ) S&S used to be really great, but alas no more. Oh yes and by the way, the burger was gross. Obviously it had been sitting around ; looked like a piece of rubber. Real class act this place.

I'm so disappointed with a place we thought was so amazing. To ease you into my frustration and swollen tongue, yes a swollen tongue! We stopped in Covington,LA on our way back from Mississippi to get dinner to go as we live another hour from there in Walker. We set at the counter and ordered, I'll spare you my families order but I ordered a Portobello Swiss burger without the onions. After paying I then went to the restroom which seemed clean and a big bowl of pretty potpourri on the sink. Whew I couldn't get out of there fast enough, it smelt worse then Bourbon St in NOLA on a good day. My husband and boys then went to the restroom and when Hubby got back I inquired about the men's restroom, he said the same thing and we had to stop the 6 yr old from saying something out loud about it. I looked at my Husband and said hey you noticed not one person is wearing a hair net and most aren't even wearing gloves. I took a photo but you'd have to zoom in. Before the guy came back from his break we watched the ladies cooking without these things. I'm shocked we didn't find a hair in anything... moving on.. So then our order is brought to us and we glance in the bag and my husband had to tell her they didn't give him the seasoned fries he ordered, not a big deal it was an easy fix. We all get to the car and head home. I'm passing out the food and opened mine swore I saw a mushroom and told my husband oh this isn't yours and proceeded to locate his. Whew got the man his food.. I can't eat in cars so I waited til we got home.. omg it's nom nom time, yes the moment I've been waiting for. Again we live an hour away. I take my burger out and take a big bite.. Oh hell no, I started screaming at the top of my lungs, couldn't get to the milk fast enough, I seriously thought I was going to die y'all from the heat that had taken over my mouth and my chest. My tongue swelled up and my throat is on fire, not just any fire but like lava hot fire. They gave me the wrong burger. I don't know what this was but it has like crunchy onions strips and jalapeños!!! Well I've been allergic to those peppers for a few yrs now and I can't even express everything I really said when I bit into that thing. So I snapped a photo of my bogus dinner then threw it in the trash can. Thanks so much Steak n Shake for messing up when y'all wasn't even busy, seriously there was like 3 tables of people there!

And the food oh my goodness the food is so good. I hate to use the word cheap but the prices are outstanding. Just wished we had this place in Baton Rouge. But the hour drive for us is worth it.

After having a very successful visit (two visits actually) to Steak & Shake in St. Louis, MO, I was stoked to learn that they were building a location in Covington. However, my visit on 9/20/2015 left me less than satisfied. We walked in to a restaurant that was 1/2 to 2/3 full upon our arrival. However, our party of 6 was seated quickly and our server arrived shortly thereafter.
It took well over 20 minutes for our food to arrive, and in the interim, I was trying to entertain a hungry 3 year old who doesn't truly comprehend the word patience. However, my thought was that Steak & Shake didn't quite comprehend the term "fast food". I counted no less than 11 people behind the counter, therefore, it looked as it the store was sufficiently staffed.
My "royale" burger was not as good as the Steak & Shake burger I remembered from St. Louis. It wasn't bad, however, it just wasn't memorable. The fried egg on top of this double meat burger was definitely the highlight of the visit. However, the French fries tasted as if the grease was way too hot because even though the outsides were not burned, the insides were void of all moisture as if they were subject to an internal blast of nuclear heat. Also, these "shoestring" fries are just way too thin.
I got a bowl of chili on the side and immediately dumped half of it on my fries in an effort to regain some moisture. I'll admit that it helped, but the chili was absolutely unspectacular. In fact, I'll state right now that a can of lean beef Wolf's brand chili is much better. I was also unhappy that the bowl was extremely shallow, giving you an initial impression that this was a nice sized bowl of chili, when it really wasn't.
This was no fault of our server, who tried to do her best to keep our drinks full as we waited patiently for our food. Perhaps if I had ordered a shake at the end of my meal, I would have enjoyed myself a little more and perhaps given a 3-star rating. But with no shake, the 2-stars remain.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Holly A.Onalaska, TX624262Nov 24, 2019
Well.... we love our steak and shake back hOme but this one was a little disappointing- off the major freeways but it was a little run down... but still had the 50's diner feel. Our waitress was good. We ordered 3 bacon steak burgers and all 3 were missing bacon hOwver our waitress was quick to bring us a small plate so we could add our bacon to our burgers. However it was pretty good!

Pretty sure you could hire some zoo animals to do a better job than the staff here. Service is slow, burgers are soggy messes, I guess the shakes are fine if you go during happy hour so they aren't overpriced.

Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 7, 2018Previous reviewThe burger is full of taste and is very cheap! The only complaint I have is that the service was alittle slow. I waited 30 min to get my food!
