I've never tried Trinidadian food before coming to Sonny's and this place did not disappoint.
We ordered:
* Doubles
* Chicken curry
* Goat curry
* Roti
* Dhal Puri
The curries and roti was incredibly satisfying and flavorful but DOUBLES is where it's at. It was honestly the best thing I've ever had. It's fried dough with chickpeas and it was spicy, savory, and delicious. You'll be so surprised that it's vegetarian as well. Next time I'm ordering like ten of these. Also, if you love spicy, you will love their hot sauce in the small to-go cups. You have to check out this spot!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Stephen M.Forest Hills, NY6278Apr 9, 2023
So, Sonny's makes their own drinks (sorrel, peanut punch, mauby, etc.), and their peanut punch is pretty good, but their sorrel tastes like sugar water almost. Their service, nonetheless, is amazing. The ambiance is a bustling, yet calm one.

When I came in here Wednesday around 1 pm I wasn't sure what I was buying because I was picking up stuff for an out-of-town friend.
I had noticed outside they had a sign in the glass advertising chicken doubles. I wasn't sure if my Muslim friend stuck to Halal meat so I texted her but I got no response.
When I went in, I asked if they could do the regular doubles. They could. I ordered 2. I also got 2 bottles of ginger beer. My friend had asked if Mauby was available but I couldn't find it there.
When I met with my friend she ate the doubles. She enjoyed them.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Zaneta O.Westbury, NY10297923200Aug 10, 2017
I've been meaning to see how this place compares to the many other Roti shops in the area. I finally got around to it and I'd say they are a 3.5 to out of 5.
I still prefer Trinciti in terms of flavor but they are always so packed and the wait is usually long. This place didn't have a wait at all but in their defense we did arrive pre-lunch hour. The good thing is they were all set up and ready to go beforehand.
We sampled the boneless chicken roti (which is actually $1 cheaper than nearby locations, many places upcharge since the meat is boneless). Decent portion size but the curry is slightly sweeter. The shrimp roti was just okay. The flavor was good but the shrimp were severely overcooked and tiny at that. The deep fried shark was okay but it has a bone in it (cartilage) so there isn't much actual meat to it. It does taste like chicken so I'd rather just have a meatier piece of actual chicken lol
The one thing that did impress me is the doubles here are actually huge and super low priced, even with the addition of chicken. If I come back it would be just for the doubles.
Parking will be tricky if you arrive at a busy hour. Read the signs and be sure to read the meter as parking regulations are strictly enforced in the area. Your best bet will be down a residential side street away from businesses.Helpful 6Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0 - 4373116039Mar 24, 2015
DO NOT TAKE PICTURES IN THIS SHOP!
As I'm sure a lot of (Caribbean) people do, even if you can make dhalpuri roti (that's the one with split/chic peas in the dough), we order it saving a ton load of time and mess.
My family found Sonny's to do a really nice roti skin so we ordered and was given a pick up time of 6:30 Saturday morning.
On arriving at the shop I was pleased to see they promoted home (T&T) by way of menu and decor. I gave the lady at the counter the pick up name and proceeded to snapping pictures for yelp purposes.
Click, check photo, click, changed angle, click click click. Out of nowhere I heard "YOU CAN'T TAKE PICTURES HERE!" You know caps signifies shouting right?
I turned to the voice, "excuse me?"
"Ah say yuh cah take pictures here"
"Why is that?" I asked, I thought maybe it was for religious reasons and I will always respect that whether I understand it or not.
"No reason de boss man just doh want anybody taking pictures in he shop"
Well blow me down with an air kiss. I retorted: "well tell your boss man to sue me or take them off my phone". I will admit (with some degree of shame), I myself was a tad rude. The order just seemed so unnecessary. What was more upsetting was up to this point I had taken pictures of the restaurant and menu board with foods that as a Trini I'm constantly asked about so my pictures were to promote this shop/restaurant in a positive light.
I don't know if "boss man" was hurt in the past by someone taking pictures in his establishment with a negative outcome, but I'm a strong advocate of it isn't what you do/say but how you do/say it. The aggression was uncalled for. It left a bad taste in my mouth. (Which isn't good for a place that sells food).
As I waited for my roti skins (the order was late), I vowed never to come here again and when I finally left their shop, we drove a few blocks down, 'round a corner and stopped at Singh's Roti Shop where we made further purchases of doubles (yummmmy) and other Indian/Trini sweets like jalebi, current rolls etc.
I took pictures AND videos at Singh's to my heart's content and wondered why we didn't order our skins from them in the first place.
You live, get chastised THEN you learn.
One star because I will not lie, the skins tasted okay......alright good.
The End.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 17Oh no 0 - Lisa D.Queens, Queens, NY122Oct 16, 2021

Well I stopped by the other day when I was craving roti and god was it totally worth it. For two fiddy you get to eat the biggest most delicious roti in your life. The lady at the counter was pretty nice as for the food I haven't tried it yet but everything was like eye candy. Their hot sauce is really really good too. I'm coming back to try the food in about a week.

I had doubles from here and I expected more. I hadn't had one in a while and that may be the reason for the big expectation. It was missing something. It tasted okay but I feel like it was lacking something important. I also wish they gave you tamarind sauce with it but they didn't.
Overall, it was satisfying but, I would try another place next time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
