I can't remember the last time I was in Slouch.
Not because it's been a long time, just because it's got a good bar, great music and it becomes just another basement bar that I've stumbled out of.
For that alone I'd recommend checking it out, but last week I was there to meet some people for food.
After a few St.Mungos, I was getting pretty hungry so ordered the chicken satay skewers to start and the Southern Girl for my main.
Thankfully the food didn't take too long to arrive, just as it didn't take too long for me to demolish the chicken satay skewers! That wasn't before I noted how succulent and juicy they were, whilst being wonderfully chargrilled on the outside. The peanut sauce could've done with a little more kick to it but overall it was delicious.
Not long after that the Southern Girl arrived. At this point I should point out that it wasn't actually a girl from the South, but a plate consisting of Southern fried chicken breast with a portion of creamy mashed potato, crisp fried hash browns and homemade dirty chicken gravy.
No, I'm not sure why you'd make gravy from a dirty chicken but there you have it.
Again the chicken was good, but I admit that I expected a bit more of a flavour from the Southern fried breadcrumbs. The mash was good, the gravy was tasty and for the most part the hash browns were crisp and delicious. I say for the most part, because the parts of them there were wading in the dirty chicken gravy soon turned soggy and disintegrated.
I love potato. I mean I LOVE potato. I may have mentioned this in other reviews (and obviously you've read them all by now) but for me this combo didn't quite work.
Mash and gravy is good, the chicken was good, but adding the hash browns didn't really bring anything to the dish and it all ended up being a bit bland and mushy. Maybe a different veg? Maybe serve it on a plate and not add so much gravy? I'm not sure, but it was all kinda 'meh' by the end.
I can't believe I've just said that about a potato dish.
This won't stop me going back to Slouch and try more of their food. It was all well cooked, and served with a smile. The beer is good, the music is good, and the prices aren't too steep for the city centre. I'll be back!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Vasu A.West End, Glasgow, United Kingdom01Oct 17, 2022
Good pub but it's self service for food and you have to pay at the same time. Not as good for bigger groups

A wee quick beer before going for Pizza, never been here before liked the vibe of the bar.

I believe they do food must remeber to check this place out in the near future.
I often forget to visit this end of town.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jade W.Glasgow, United Kingdom4645168Jul 5, 2016
Loved it, 5 star from me! Wahoo!
I visited Slouch on a Friday evening after work. I'd walked past multiple times when on bath street and continuously thought to myself 'I must try it'. Finally I decided it was time after listening to a friend talk about their cocktails.
Wow what a menu. There must be something on there to suit everybody. From vegan delights to enchiladas, to mac and cheese to burgers and hot dogs. I found it so difficult to pick! I narrowed it down to four, then three, then just bit the bullet and went for the Cowboy burger and twice cooked chips. Mainly 'cause I'm a sucker for twice cooked chips!
The Cowboy had a hunk of perfectly cooked beef patty (it was so thick!) topped wiith grilled cheese, bacon, house burger sauce (usually BBQ but I swapped it out) and a cheeky crispy onion ring. I was really pleased Iswapped out the BBQ sauce for their house burger sauce - it was totally a good shout. Delicious! The twice cooked chips were heavenly! Perfect crunch on the outside, fluffy inner and accompanied the super creamy coleslaw marvellously.
Patrick had the Meat Lover pizza which was super duper cheesy loveliness. Every piece he pulled off was like gooey cheese porn, eeee! Stringy, gooey, cheesy spectacular.
Even though I struggled to finish my main I was dying to try a dessert. We ordered coffee whilst we waited for our tummies to free up some room for seconds. We were meant to share - but neither of us could come to an agreed choice, so we ordered one each. Even though we had zero room haha... I got the sticky toffee pudding (such an amazing choice of mine!) and Patrick got the rum and flake baked banana. Both were soooooo freaking good. Mine more so ;). The toffee sauce was beaut, soft spongey cake and wonderfully creamy ice cream. Yasss!
The reason this review got 5 stars though is mainly due to the outstanding service we received. The staff truly deserve every single tip that comes their way. They're friendly, efficient and so totally on it! I've not had service that good in a longgggg time.
Absolutely spot on. I'll be back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - David A.Glasgow, United Kingdom21162328Jul 27, 2015
Slouch is my post-work stop-off point. It's a great place to come and wind down after a busy day.
Week nights, post-work, is normally quite lively. Not overly busy, but a good vibe to the place. Mostly rock music - heavily 90s influenced - so right up my street.
Great staff, always friendly and open to nattering on the quieter evenings. And, unless it's really busy, they also do table service.
They have a good beer selection - Williams Bro and West on draught - Joker IPS (my choice of draught beer) is £3.95 a pint - as well as a decent range of bottled beers. They also do cocktails. you'll find cocktail menus on every table. Try the espresso martini.
As well as a pretty awesome bar, there's also a dedicated restaurant area - on the left as you come in the main door, the bar is on the right.
Great bar food - mostly burgers, pizza, nachos and hot dogs. There's also a Market Menu that's updated daily. Oh, and banoffee cheese cake!
Bands also play here, mostly at the weekend. It's a great intimate venue. But if the music gets too loud for you, they have ear plugs for free at the bar.
Right I better run, the work bell has just rung and I'm due at Slouch.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Angelique M.Wandsworth, London, United Kingdom749975Aug 17, 2015
Holy moley this place is goooood.
Great range of draught beers & the food was sooooooooo goood!!! Even the chips- so pleasantly spiced!
Add to these things the fact that the staff are freakn brilliant, the play list of super good tunes, and the cosy chill atmosphere and decor complete with homely candles and this place is winning at life.
Got a nice range of spirits too so I'll be back to try those. Wish I knew about this place sooner!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Tony C.Carstairs Junction, United Kingdom148375404Dec 4, 2014
How the dickens have I never been in here before? TELL ME HOW, DAMMIT???
After a night at a Yelp event, a gig in the O2 ABC, and band watching in Howlin' Wolf, I'd got wind that the Temperance Movement (the gig I was at) were chilling out in Slouch and generally faffing about.
So, being a glory hunter, off I went.
And yes, the band were there, I hobnobbed and selfied and high fived and even bought drinks, had drinks bought for me and basically fanboyed out. That was cool.
But... but.... but!!! Slouch itself is INCREDIBLE. Open until 3am (which is when I stumbled out *hic*) every night, it's a cool basement bar, with a wide range of beers, ales, lagers and spirits. I had *cough* some Joker IPA and some St Mungo, both fine Scottish beverages.
Prices aren't too steep even allowing for city centre and late night prices, and there's tons of nooks and crannies to get lost in, cool chandeliers to admire, candles galore and the music choice was eclectic, varied but fantastic.
There was some space for dancing, as Phil from the Temperance Movement demonstrated ably with his missus. The winchin' was maybe a bit OTT, but hey, who am I to judge?
Get in here! I will definitely be back! Although, I of course am never, ever drinking again. Ever. At all.
Until Friday.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Rob K.Glasgow, United Kingdom2173371148Jun 18, 2015Updated review
Since I first reviewed Slouch, it has become a regular post work pit stop with the Mr to unwind and blether about our days.
I've still not got round to eating here, but the food looks and smells amazing! And they do regular meal deals too. They've an alright selection of beers (bottled and on tap) but we usually opt for Joker ipa (currently £3.95 a pint). Slouch also does a lot of cocktails, with different promotional prices which change regularly.
The staff are always super friendly and are good for a chat if you're on your own. I've also been here at the weekend - it gets extremely busy but the staff are just as good, and offer a table service for drinks.
The music is always (and I mean ALWAYS) awesome - because it's chosen by the customers. I've put up a tip with the email address for music requests.
All in all, I LOVE Slouch!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Nov 27, 2014Previous reviewSlouch was one of this week's date night, pub crawl firsts for me.
It's quite a large basement bar, with old fashioned Chippendale couches/chairs and booths.
I really liked it here. It was very relaxing, a bit studenty-ish, with the most attentive bar staff I've ever came across. I literally put my empty glass down and she was there, asking if I wanted another drink.
It's somewhere I'd definitely go again to lounge about, after a hard day at work. - Briony C.Glasgow, United Kingdom1506129310067Mar 31, 2014
With an hour to kill before dinner, I needed a cocktail. Or two. And some chips. Thankfully Slouch has all these things on the menu PLUS seating so that meant it was the perfect stop for Saturday afternoon drinks.
My first cocktail was the Personality Crisis £5.95. Made from "Smirnoff Green Apple Vodka & Xante Pear Cognac, shaken with lemons and apple juice. Finished with a splash of lemonade and a drizzle of grenadine, served in a chilled wine glass." There's no denying this cocktail had an apple zing to it - quite sweet but not too over the top and pretty easy drinking.
I'd ordered the twice cooked fries (£2.95) and they arrived pretty quickly and were piping hot. They weren't amazing fries, a little greasy but overall they were pretty decent and we demolished them without any trouble.
I then opted to get into a second cocktail - it was a Saturday afternoon, after all. The Black Magic Woman (£6.50) is an espresso martini with "Illy Espresso, Smirnoff Red, Patron XO & brown sugar shaken over ice, strained into a martini glass and dusted with chocolate." Woah. This was GOOD. I mean, really good. A bit addictive, even. Thankfully I wouldn't be able to tolerate two espresso martinis so that wasn't really an option. I loved the chocolate dusting and it was one of the best espresso martinis I've ever had. I'd even go so far as to say I would go back to Slouch just for this cocktail, it was that good.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Caleb D.Nashville, TN720902907Mar 3, 2011Updated review
It still works! Since I first ventured in here, they've started to put on gigs (aye, tis another music venue in sunny G) which totally fits in with the vibe of the place and not like some places where it can feel a tad 'crowbarred' in to pull in the crowds.
This place is kinda settling in to itself. It still has a 'shirt and tie' feel to it, purely down to it's cosy couches, good music vibe that we all seek for a post work pint.
Staff in here continue to be both friendly, efficient and engaging. This is good! I like my bar staff to smile at me and pass the time of day, not to judge me by my age, dress sense and lack of media glasses (they're in my bag ok... they're prescription... bloody hipsters!).... and yes Sleazies, I am looking directly at you, pointing fingers and holding a flashing neon sign which reads 'I'm referring to you, Sleazies, in the last disguised attack on aloof, judgmental staff'.
Is this my favorite of the Bath Street bars? Eh? You know what, it's not far off. That is all, you may leave now.... close the door please.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Nov 26, 2010Previous reviewYou know what? Yay! I am a fan. New pubs in the city are pretty hard to come by. Actually, lets re phrase that. New pubs in the city that ain't absolute dross are hard to come by.
Now before i go any further with this review, i have to admit to something. You know that scene in the Big Lebowski where the erstwhile hero of the piece finds himself in the back of a cab, declaring his hatred for 'the f*cking eagles'? Well, for me it's the f*cking Beatles that get my goat. Can i explain the hatred? No. Is it real? OH hell yes!.
Anyway, the reason for the tangent hop is to give you a wee insight into my first thoughts fo this joint. After walking into this 'Rock and Roll' pub, i was met by the sounds of those who shall not be named, and thought 'bugger, another crap pub', only to be blasted from my grump chair by the Boss and a full volume volley of 'Born to Run'... grump over.
The beef:
-Beers aplenty, reasonably priced (ish....it is Bath Street)
-Cocktails, yum yum
-Sounds... you heard
- Vibe... it's there but yet to be finalized, give it a month or two.
Will i be back? Aye, most likely. In this part of town its kinda hard to find some awright surroundings to listen to some straight talking Rythem and Blues music whilst chucking back a beer and talking (aye... talking, nae shouting) to a man friend or two.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses... Hit it. - Greg B.Glasgow, United Kingdom515Aug 3, 2016
The food is of a higher quality than you would normally get in this type of place.
The bar menu has a load of burgers, dogs and pizzas but we like to go for the bar bites - onion rings, fries, haggis bon-bons.
One time our chorizo balls were cold, they replaced them and also gave us a glass of wine to ensure our hearts were as warm as our balls.
The menu and service in the restaurant part really is of the highest quality - we even came here for Hogmanay.
They make good cocktails here and the beer selection is great. The staff are notably friendly and cheerful.
Popular with the younger crowd. The music is good but pretty loud, and they show mismatched music videos which should be illegal. Despite this, Slouch remains one of the best bar/kitchens I've been to.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0
