Micklethwait is a bbq place that serves its food via a food truck. They have outdoor seating with fans and free water.
I came on a Thursday during lunch time. The wait was not that long at all, and I got my food fairly quickly.
I decided to get the 2 meat plate, but I also liked that they had options for other mains like tacos. For the 2 meat plate, I got brisket and pulled lamb with a side of beans and jalapeño cheese grits.
The brisket was so tender and juicy. The lamb was also delicious and easy to eat. They both paired well with the sauces on the table. Grits aren't exactly my favorite but the jalapeño grits definitely are one of the better grits I've had. It is not spicy at all though, more cheesy if anything. The beans were good. Felt satisfied by the end of the meal.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - 99415242May 11, 2024
By far, Micklethwait was our favorite meal of our Houston and Austin trip. We got the 3 meat + 2 sides plate. We selected pork ribs, brisket, sausage, grits, and cabbage. The brisket and grits were the stars of the plate, but everything else was tasty too.
We arrived around 11:50 AM on Thursday, and there was only 1 person ahead of us in line. By the time we had finished around 12:20, there was about ten people in line. If the line had been shorter, we would've gone back for seconds.
All in all, we were very impressed with the food, especially considering that the initial wait time was so short. Unfortunately, we visited on the second to last day of our trip, so we didn't have the chance to go back.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 11, 2024
Absolutely fantastic. The Sope was a special item. So loaded, I could not pick it up with my hand (I mean, I did, but quickly put it down because it wasn't stable). Loaded with lamb and an assortment of toppings and spices. The Sope itself was unctuous and lovely to bite into. The sides were also very good, but the meat was perfect, clearly the star of the show.

The hubby and I arrived at Micklethwait on a Thursday afternoon. It wasn't super crowded so we were able to order and find a seat within 10 minutes.
We ordered the brisket Frito pie which was very good but way too spicy. We pushed the jalapeños to the side but it was either the chili or salsa verde that continued to kill our tastebuds. A little warning would've been nice, so we'd know not to order it.
We then shared the two meat plate with brisket and sausage with a side of mac and cheese and potato salad. The brisket had a nice smoke ring to it, sausage was our favorite part of the meal, while the mac and cheese and potato salad lacked salt.
Not my favorite bbq place in Austin but worth trying for the sausage alone. The service was lackluster. They weren't rude but not friendly whatsoever which caught me off guard, since Austin seems like a very friendly place.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Nov 16, 2023
We came midday to Micklethwait and had a few people ahead of us in line but after placing our order, our food didn't come out for 40 mins. Being it's all pre smoked we were a bit surprised and so we're the people around us.
The food itself was good - the lamb was tasty but a lil dry, the brisket was decent but I had better over the weekend, thso grits just good not great but the beets were delicious.
I like the open set up and that they were dog friendly but given the wait and compared to other bbq we had in Austin, don't think we would be back.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Feb 17, 2024
The ambiance is fun and outdoors would be great on a tad warmer day! Parking was easy! We got pulled lamb and brisket! The brisket was a little too fatty but all so tasty! Grab a beer inside the saddle and wait for your food inside--it was a bit blustery out for us!

Some of the best brisket in Austin and when taking into account how short the line is, it's the best wait-time-to-quality-of-BBQ ratio in town!! Waiting anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes you will get amazing brisket, sausage, and turkey, great sides, but only mediocre ribs. The BBQ sauces and hot sauces spread around the tables are also lovely. The parking lot is small so you might need to park on the street, but there are lots of covered picnic tables in front of the airstream restaurant. They also have many drinks and pastries available in the building next door.

I'll also put their brisket up against any of the other Big Boys. The guys were super nice and the prices were right. In addition, the chicken, potato salad, beans, and homemade bread were excellent and the homemade GIGANTIC moon pie was incredible!!!!

Some of the best barbecue I've ever had. I had the pulled lamb, pork ribs, brisket, sausage, jalapeño cheese grits, beet salad and lemon poppyseed slaw. All of the meats were exceptional, pulled lamb is a bit unique and I'm so glad that I got it. It's honestly really hard to say which meats I liked best because they were all great.
The cheddar jalapeño grits were exceptionally good, one of the best bbq sides I've ever had. The beets were pretty good and the coleslaw was alright, I would try something different next time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 5, 2024
I've heard a lot of great things about Micklethwait from people, but honestly after two visits I don't fully get it. It's good food and the employees are really sweet, but I would say it's fairly average Austin barbecue. The best part about it is the fact that both times that I went, there was virtually no wait, which is a welcome surprise for Texas BBQ. To be fair to them, both times I went in the afternoon, so I may need to give them one more try in the morning when the meat is (presumably) fresher. I'd recommend this if you're looking for quick barbecue that clears Rudy's, but I wouldn't plan a day around it.
