Review Highlights
Napa has always been a shopping wasteland. Though there are more options currently thanks to a revitalized downtown and an outlet mall, Napans still find themselves travelling over various hills to shop.
That being said Napa has always had a "world-class" store and Shackford's is it. The store belied its (now defunct) spray-painted stencil sign and offered a selection of cooking ware that any major city store would be proud of: Just when you think they aren't gonna have that raclette machine, you wander deeper into its aisles and find one (and the elegant cheese slicer you always wanted).
Shackfords could keep me broke forever. The things that I had to have for the dinner party, the things I didnt' have to have but had to have and... Just always makes me want to enhance my cooking skills.
Anything and everything you'd want for your kitchen. It's not fancy. But the people working here really know their stuff. Plus they are friendly and the prices are fantastic. If there were more Shackford's, Williams Sonoma would be in trouble!!!
Shackford's is the little-known kitchen Mecca of the Napa Valley. Somehow,it manages to cram A LOT of supplies-even cookbooks-in its little space. This is the place to look for dehydrators, juicers, chefs' aprons, uniforms. I once had a boss who would shop here for needed supplies--so Shackford's is a lifesaver!
I also got a set of pots and pans for a reasonable price and are quite durable. Be sure to check out the sales! They have high-quality kitchen supplies,as well as friendly, knowledgeable service. It's the place to look if you cooK!
I've always walked past this place and thought... "I should really go in there" but I never did. Which was probably a good thing because now that I have gone in there I have to be restrained from going every day. If you're going to burn ramen noodles or cover a 7 tier wedding cake in fondant Shackfords can help. I didn't even need anything but Oh did I find stuff. This place has skull and cross bones cookie cutters for crying out loud! They even have an Oakland A's cookie jar. Beat that pampered chef!
Though this place is a little pricey, it does make sense why it is, it's a small store where you can find almost anything. I have been driving from SJ for years to buy this specific melting chocolate that they sale for my truffles. I am very picky about the quality of chocolate I use and this store is the only one that seems to sell it. Besides getting my chocolate I love being able to find fun unique cooking things for my mom! The women working there have always been very friendly and helpful when I had any questions.
This place is what it is. It's a kitchen store full of kitchen stuff and cool little chicken figurines. I wish there were more local country stores such as this in Napa.
This place was like Disneyland for me when I first started experimenting with baking and candy making. They're small, but they've got everything I can think of for my cooking needs. I love their selection of cake decorating goodies. I also have been in there countless times to find boxes the right size and shape for gifting various baked goods. The ladies working there have been very friendly and helpful. I'm so glad to have this store in my home town!
You can find almost anything here.....
My last purchases 2 short martini glasses that must hold 8 oz.. only 3 bucks each,
and
Black liquid coloring. Um yah they have all the liquid or powder colors you could want....
If you have ocd at all please save yourself and don't go in. If you are willing to look through some crap to get some gold then go for it.....
I think they should rename this place Napa Chef Porn, because I swear I saw my wife drooling and panting as we entered Shackford's.
She being a pastry chef and us being in the city of Napa, my wife assured me that she needed to pick up a couple of items for a demo she's doing at her school (she's actually a pastry chef instructor) and that Shackford's was the place to go. She's been shopping here on and off for about 10 years since her days at Auberge and Copia. Apparently, it's where the chefs all shop...
So what was supposed to be a 5 minute errand turned into a 45 minute tour of the shop with my wife ooohing and aaaahing the whole time. I gotta give it to Shackford's though, they are indeed very specialized with tons of cake making tools, a decent collection of books, which is where I ended up spending most of my time reading the 50 best martini cookbook.
Here's the recipe for Churchill's Martini, which I found simply hilarious:
6 parts gin
Bottle of dry vermouth
Cocktail olive
Shake gin in a cocktail shaker with cracked ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and look at the bottle of vermouth. Garnish with olive.
Imagine Williams of Sonoma, but local. They carry some of the same products at the same prices except an EXPERT will actually help you! I have learned many things in the 25 years I've been going to this shop.
I'd highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a good quality product.
I absolutely love this store. They ordered a new carafe for my coffee press and called when it came in. I have always been able to find anything and everything I need or didn't know I needed. Very knowledgeable and recommend the best tool for the job (needed a new frying pan). On my way over to pick up some cupcake fixins for a birthday party this weekend!
Why has no one rated this place yet? It's been around forever and is a fantastic kitchen store -- think Sur La Table goods, but with a downhome, general store-type feel. The front window is lined with old school cookie jars and cute salt & pepper shakers, and the narrow aisles are packed with everything a cook could imagine, from copper pots to ice cream cookbooks to kitchen scales to candy-making molds. There are also small kitchen appliances (like mixers and food processors), replacement parts for those appliances and cleaning supplies.
I could spend hours (and plenty of money) in here.
My favorite part of the store is the baking supplies. They have decorating tips of all shapes and sizes, several types of food coloring in a rainbow of colors (and yes, they are well-stocked so you can always find what you are looking for), cute cupcake papers, piping bags in numerous sizes and pans galore.
I don't know exactly how to feel about Shackford's. It's the only kitchen store within a twenty mile radius of my house, but they do have at least a couple options for a multitude of kitchen tools. The staff is very helpful in a country store kinda way.
minus one star for being a little disorganized and having the shelves stuffed all the way to the ceiling.
If you can't find it at Shackford's they it doesn't exist. There are so many little intricate, useful and can't live without things in Shackfords. The locals call it, "Shakelfords" but it's the best. It can be pricey for Napa but no more expensive than William Sonoma. The owners should have franchised 20 years ago. The staff is friendly but you can wait in line a bit. They still ring things on the giant register and write hand tickets.
Yay, Shackfords!! When I was in culinary school, everyone was always talking about it, and I was too stupid to get my ass over to Napa to check it out. And now - I live like 3 blocks away, and I pop in all the time. It's not even dangerous for me - most of the little items I need - like piping bags or cake circles are literally pennies. This place is crammed full of everything from Le Creuset and All-Clad cookware to fun little novelties like tiny tart tins and cookie cutters. People from out of town will love browsing here, and locals can find pretty much anything they could possibly wish for in the way of kitchen supplies. The service is always highly hospitable, as well. Yesterday I bought over a dozen large mason jars, and the adorable woman who rang me up insisted on carrying them to my car for me, she would not take no for an answer - there's your 5th star right there. A for effort, m'lady!
