Candle pin bowling is the great equalizer.  Power does not guarantee wins.  But style goes a long way.  That's what makes it so much fun.

The owner still comes in every day as he has since 1946.  I've been a customer since I was a little kid. And it's so cheap.  If you visit Boothbay Harbor, this place is a must visit.

Romar was empty on beautiful weekday afternoon, and it looked like a lot of fun from the outside, but we were soon to receive a very unpleasant surprise.

We walked in, two couples with two kids and an infant. The attendant asked us how old our kids were. We said almost 4. She instantly started shaking her head and saying "no, no. Last time kids came in here, they almost broke the machines, and you see how old the machines are. Parents don't know how to watch their kids." and so forth and so on. She went on and on with a very nasty tone.

Now, this happened a few months ago, and I've had time to consider that what was described by the attendant may have been something that happened, but there was no need to be rude (and basically hustle us out of the place).

So much for taking the kids. I give the rating as fair warning to all you parents out there.

Ah, candlepin bowling by the sea; there's nothing like it. The building has incredible character. It's a shabby old place which has been fighting off the destructive effects of the salt air for decades, and I suspect that some of the lanes are warped a bit. But it's still a lot of fun.

My son (he's seven) loves the place. One of the big advantages of candlepin bowling is that even a small child can lift and roll the balls easily. Younger ones may need to use two hands and have a little help from an adult in order to actually hit some pins, though. :D

It's like stepping back to the early 1950s when you're there. The mechanisms are a bit primitive, and you have to keep score by hand. But it's a great way to pass an hour or two in Boothbay Harbor.

There's also food, as well as a back room with a few arcade games and a couple of pool tables. We didn't try those. But the bowling is always fun, and we always have fun there every time we're in Boothbay Harbor.

Cool little old-fashioned candlepin bowling lanes.  I personally suck at bowling, but it's such a cool old building.  I  think it's been here since 1946 if I am not mistaken.
