12.17.10 My tummy is not feeling good, so I stopped here to get some chicken soup and egg bread. It was raining outside and hardly anyone inside, so I was outta there really quick.
The chicken soup is still pretty good, though there are fewer actual pieces of chicken in it. I don't like the rice or noodles (and when they put them in, there is very little soup), so I get just the chicken soup and the matzo ball. The matzoh ball is somewhat fluffy but a little chewy.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Oct 25, 2010Previous reviewNeeded a quick bite with a friend so this was the closest place.
Had a roast turkey dinner with cranberry, potatoes, dressing. ($15.95)
Lola had a cheese, tomato, avocado omelette. ($10.75)
Decent food, nothing to write home about. Quick and simple. Too expensive for what it is.Sep 1, 2010Previous reviewI used to really love this deli in my hood. The venue is nice, convenient outdoor parking, nice looking sort of coffee shop looking place. Old style waitresses. But, unfortunately like so many places, it has gone down hill. Not crowded anymore, high prices, smaller portions. The outside of the cheese blintzes looks and tastes like the outside of a chile relleno (possibly due to the all hispanic help).
But I still stop by for the white cake! Um um um. It's a huge piece with LOTS of frosting, very moist cake. The chocolate cake is not so good, very thin layer of frosting, not moist enough. Today they didn't have white cake so I got carrot cake. So so.... the cake was definitely not moist, tasted a little stale, and the icing was okay but without a good cake under it, what's the point.
The best sandwich here is the California Melt, a mountain of gooey, hot, dripping cheese on top of either turkey or a chicken breast with avocado and grilled onions on grilled rye bread. A heart attack on a plate. Need to share or take home the rest. At $14.50, a little on the pricey side for a sandwich.
An era gone by... Rita, you need to lower your prices and the people will come back. - Michelle T.Huntington Beach, CA03Jun 9, 2021
I miss this place. Some of the best matzo ball soup. Whenever I had stomach issues, I would order their soup and a sandwich and Just felt so much better. Their bagel crisps....oh wish I could go their again. Thanks for the many years of wonderful comforting meals.

This place is just... DIRTY.
The glasses had dried up stuff on it.

The napkins were .. already DIRTY before it was even used.

The food is okay.. but I wouldn't come back here. There was even a pickle that stuck to the menu they gave us to order.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Ruth A.San Pedro, CA4642251173Jul 29, 2013Updated review
For some great menu choices, please see my previous review.
This update is a rave about the Monte Cristo Sandwich : It's like a savory donut: double decker w real roast turkey, ham, cheese on egg bread, dipped in an egg coating and deep fried for a real light & crispy outside.
I like it best without the usual powdered sugar and jam - just like to enjoy all the savory elements. Get extra napkins in case you want to blot any excess oil ( can't really get a good crust any other way. )
Once again, this is my favorite place to get the Monte Cristo Sandwich !Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0Jul 15, 2013Previous reviewOne of a vanishing breed of Deli's. Some of the top choices on their very large menu:
Roast Turkey Leg (see photo ) - best meal deal on the menu ! Served hot or cold, accompanied with fresh vegs, side salad(s) cured black olive, radish floret
Matzoh Ball Soup or Mish Mash Soup, well flavored chicken broth with white meat chicken, vegs and noodles and a very light, tasty matzoh ball - Comfort Food 101.
Corned Beef and/or Pastrami Sandwich on fresh baked rye bread with a nice crunchy crust.
Stuffed Cabbage - tender leaves, stuffed with a ground beef & rice filling and simmered in a tangy sweet and sour sauce
Steamed Veggie Plate - a cornucopia of fresh vegs including cauliflower, carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, all cooked just right. It's a beautiful and filling plate - may be topped with melted cheese of your choosing
Lox, Eggs and Onions - lightly scrambled together for a great smokey, salty and sweet taste experience
Roast Beef or Brisket of Beef very tender and with an exceptional brown gravy ( which I enjoy even on the green beans they serve here, not to mention many like it on mashed potato ) You can get boiled potatoes if you prefer.
Kosher Dill Pickles and Pickled Tomatoes are great ( no vinegar here, just plenty of garlic and dill in the salt brine. ) They may have "new pickles" or "half pickles" too - crisper, darker and less salty. I like them all ! Oh, and of course they're served complimentary.
Carrot Cake - very moist, lightly sweet with carrots, raisins etc and topped with a very special cream cheese frosting - I had to seek out the baker to offer my highest compliments on this !
Plenty of easy parking in the lot out front. - Sarah S.Culver City, CA564104191Aug 1, 2011
I heard a lot of good things about Roll 'n Rye, but sadly I am a bit disappointed. Honestly? It's just plain over-priced. I couldn't allow myself to spend $13 for a turkey sandwich. I think that is just ridiculous.
The ambiance is fun, they have some funky art that plays on words like Marilyn Mon-Roll, which looks like her but her face is a doughnut. Stuff like that. The menu looks pretty good, but that price tag is a bit too much. I tried the meatloaf sandwich special, which was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. My sig other had the The Bow Wow, which is a hot dog with american cheese and bacon on it. That was pretty good and I felt like it wasn't that expensive.
I know a lot of people rave about Roll 'n Rye, but there are a ton of other deli's that do it better and are priced better. I would say take the time to drive up to Santa Monica and try Izzy's Deli. The ambiance is better, they are open late, and the food is pretty good. Or if you just want a pastrami sandwich, go down Sepulveda and try Johnnie's Pastrami (which is also overpriced, but I still don't feel as ripped off there).Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Rock L.Santa Clarita, CA1048177Mar 29, 2014
I'm a sucker for a good Jewish deli !! And this place is no exception !! It's not my favorite Jewish deli in L.A. but it is good and close to where I work... I love coming here for breakfast... Occasionally I slip over here for a corned beef and swiss sandwich for lunch... The food and service are always good.
If you aren't careful how you order, it can be a bit pricey, but you are paying for quality...Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Pilar B.Anaheim, CA53951231Jan 13, 2013
Been meaning to check out this restaurant because it always popped up on my Yelp search for soups, salads and sandwiches. But the funny thing is, I ordered neither. Instead, I visited during brunch. You know how you walk into restaurants and everything look like old diner or that every customer is a senior citizen?? This is the spot but not in a bad way. Just mean that this restaurant has history and has been in existence since 1965, so I'm not mad at that, I like these type of restaurants.
I ordered the brunch special which was the Salmon Benedict with 2 Mimosas. I have no complaints about the meal. The salmon was cooked right and of course I enjoy egg benedicts even the creamy sauce was good. I would say that the Mimosas had pulp in it...I prefer without the pulp but maybe that's how they roll with the drink.
The waitress was very friendly, maybe her magical smile possessed me into getting the 2nd Mimosa because I was only going to have one. My overall experience was pleasant....I do think the prices should be lowered for the quality of the food.
Plenty of parking because the location is in a shopping center. Thank you!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dec 26, 2011
Haven't been in awhile, but it still is a very good Old School Deli. Like Arts, or Jerry's, you can't go wrong with their breakfast dishes, or their sandwiches and dinners.
Recently tried the chicken liver omelet (just to try it) and I really liked it.
The bagel is adequate, but not as good as say Nate n Al's or even Cantors.
The sliced tomato option (instead of the various potatoes) is boring, yes, but unfortunately, they don't make it any better. Two medium small slices seem inadequate to me --- however, this is not the only place where I have this complaint.
Coffee, fair enough.
I like RnR, and hope to swing by again soon.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dec 30, 2009
Let me go on the record as saying that Roll 'n Rye has the best chicken soup in town! There's a deep homemade chicken flavor that's not to be missed. You can also order it with a matzo ball, rice, or noodles and they're all outstanding. You must try it! They also have terrific daily soup offerings that I usually call ahead for. Navy Bean and Turkey Gumbo are among my other favorites. If you get the soup to go, opt for the bagel chips instead of crackers!
Enough about the soups, this place has monster skyscrapper sandwiches and ginormous homemade desserts that will challenge anyone's abilities to stretch out their stomachs in one sitting. Your first order of business should be to order a beverage and ask the waiter to give you a couple of minutes to take in all of your options, or you're sure to see the sandwich you really wanted glide by you as you wait for your hasty order. The pastrami, corned beef, and brisket are superb!
BTW I have been going to Roll 'n Rye for 10+ years and I must admit that it's one of my favorite Deli's in Los Angeles--and there are certainly many to pick from! However, what keeps bringing me back 2-3 times each month are the soups! You must order soup to fully appreciate why I gave it a 4-star rating.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 6, 2013
I will definitely never come back to Roll 'N Rye.
The food is both unspecial and overpriced , just like almost everyone is saying about this place. If you want New York Deli style food, there are much better options in the Pico / Robertson area. If you're hankering for good bagels and appetizing, Santa Monica has this beat.
So what does this place have to recommend for it? Well, it does exist. If you don't mind overpaying by a few dollars on EVERY item and leaving generally underwhelmed, then this place is ok.
But I have no interest in going back, myself.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
