I was recently visiting family in Cleveland and stumbled across the Slovak Club. Being of Slovak heritage, I couldn't resist stopping by to check it out. I was pleasantly surprised to find them serving lunch and they had a great bar inside. It was lunch time, so I had to explore. I grabbed some chicken paprikas, noodles & cabbage, cabbage rolls, and beans. All this was $20! It was very economical and quite tasty as well. It reminded me of eating my grandmothers food. The bar service was great as well. They had good beer on tap and a decent liquor selection as well. I am very happy I stopped and wished I had something like this in Florida. Very welcoming spot.

I came here with some friends because I heard they have one of the best fish fries around and definitely found that to be true. Will for sure be going again.
I think the best part was probably the bar. My husband got a coke and rum and I got a blue moon for a total of 7 dollars - totally unheard of! They weren't skimpy with the orange either- it was a big ole slice! And don't think we got dixie cups either- they were plastic pint glasses, filled all the way. My pic looks deceiving bc I had already drank quite a bit haha.
Secondly, the menu was perfect (see pic below). The choices were aplenty: all in all, my table got a pound of walleye, a walleye sandwich with fries, a perch dinner with fries, deep fried pierogies, drinks, onion rings, apple sauce, cole slaw, and cabbage and noodles. We feasted.
Third, the service was really good. Our waitress straight up looked like Mila kunis too. Other than that, they have a bowling alley!
I def recommend getting your fried lenten fish here, even if you don't celebrate lent. It's not religious (there's a full bar for goodness sake) so if you're worried about that aspect, you'll be alright. Also, if you're a young person reading this, go to fish fries! I would like to hope they are still around in the next 30+ years.Helpful 20Thanks 0Love this 23Oh no 0 - Jul 7, 2019
I've been to American Slovak many times, but this is my first review. They have a great Lake Erie perch dinner on Fridays... $14.99 which isn't a bad price, considering the price of Lake Erie perch, but they can definitely be more generous with the fries & delicious coleslaw! Just saying....
As we know half of the enjoyment of dining out is the hospitality, and our beautiful hostess & waitress was Natasha..... she was quite friendly, hospitable and attentive!

Went here the first Friday of Lent at around 3:30pm. It was pretty full, but the time we left there was a long line forming.
You seat yourself, but it is a bit hard to navigate inside the club.
Once you seat yourself, a waitress takes your order and menus are on the table. You have to order your drinks at the bar. The food came out very quickly. We were first served 2 pieces of bread - one rye an done white with butter.
Then our entrees came out. I pieces together a meal so I could try multiple things. I had fried calamari, coleslaw and pierogis which were all absolutely fantastic. The coleslaw is a bit tangy, but so tasty.
My hubby ordered the fish and shrimp dinner and was good too. The fish had great flavor. The shrimp were pretty basic as were the fries.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Bret N.Elyria, OH42748Apr 6, 2019
Really good food. I had fish ( really good) and substituted the cabbage and onions for the fries ( very nice and not over cooked) coleslaw was good to. We also had coconut cream pie and it was the best coconut cream pie I ever had.
Everything here including the tartar sauce is homemade
The people are very nice here and the dining room is kept clean. Our server was personable and gave good service even though it was a busy dinner service.
PS: bought a nut roll to take home and everyone thought it was great.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cara L.Cleveland, OH3355971434Mar 8, 2016
I loved this place! I was going to come here no matter what other people write about their experiences. This place could care less about their Yelp reviews. These ladies have been cooking perch for centuries before people like us "yelpers" existed. The same recipe for that many years?! Heck yes I want to check this place out!
A few things you need to know as a newbie. 1) Bring Cash 2) All drinks need to be ordered at the bar 3) you need to enter through the side with the bowling alley 4) just get the fish! 5) maybe some pierogi on the side
Perch is perch only when it hasn't been fried to perfection. This perch is too good to pass up! I wish we could go back to the days of .80 cents per perch dinner :) Oh and one last thing the tarter sauce is the BOMB!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Summer G.Valencia, Santa Clarita, CA717775Jul 12, 2014
Great fish fry Fridays! Hours are 11-8. Get here early. They usually run out of cabbage rolls and cabbage/noodles early.
Vibe in here is sort of like the cafeteria of a retirement home but man, is the food legit!
Seat yourself when you enter. Someone takes your food order when you sit but you have to walk up to the bar and pay for your drinks separately.
What do they do that's so good? Perch is fresh and not fishy. Batter is perfectly seasoned. The only negative is how quickly the batter gets soggy. But really even their soggy fish still tastes good.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - M C.Cleveland, OH01132Feb 27, 2015
I don't get it!!!
I want to say that this is the first fish fry I got food at, so I don't have anything to compare it to other than the fish I make at home. Having said that I don't understand the hype and yes the only reason I gave it a try is that I was so intrigued by the great reviews and the wonderful praise on Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Food.
I drove 1/2 hr for takeout having high hopes. It took more than 5 mins. to get into the very packed parking lot. They had an off duty police officer helping with the parking but he wasn't much help. Told me to drive backwards down one lane and pull into a spot that opened up. As I zigzaged around the horribly parked cars another car pulled out of their spot and tried to get out. They totally blocked me. No problem, I decided to just find parking on the street. I actually am glad I did that rather than risking my car getting dinged.
I walk into the building and the line wrapped around the hall with no ending in sight. I decide to join the crowd. I felt like I was in a Sienfeld episode waiting for the Soup Natzi's glorious soup. Most off the people around me were first timers. I did however find some people that have had their fish fry before and they swore that it was very good. Then another guy told me that it was all about the experience. Hearing this and that the wait was 1 hour really pumped me up. I really thought that I found a hidden gem. I stood in line for 20 minutes seeing people leaving with takeout bags. I finally asked one person if the wait was actually 1 hour. Luckly this individual told me that I could bypass the long line and go up and place my order once I entered the hall. So I did just that. Let me say that the wait is so long to sit and eat because the hall is rather small. I found my way around, BTW no one to really guide those first timers where to go for take out. I asked the girl who was taking the orders to explain the difference between the Fish Dinner and the Fish Platter and after learning that the fish dinner comes with coleslaw and fries I decided to go with that. Another 20 minutes later I got my meal. I do have to say that one nice thing is that they do have a bar you can get drinks at but since I was driving, no drink for me.
Another 1/2 hour drive back home and feeling very excited to try the meal. I get home and open my box only to find out that they messed up my order. No coleslaw!!! I try the fish by itself before dunking it into their homemade tartar sauce. No Salt, No Pepper, No Seasoning, NADA. This equaled to NO FLAVOR! Then there were the fries. Again plain as day. So I'm thinking that maybe they don't season anything because there were sooo many elderly folks there (no offense) that maybe they are on salt restrictions for health reasons. But come on, throw me at least a pinch of salt. I can say though that their tartar sauce was very good, but I did not go there for their tartar sauce.
End conclusion: This place is popular with those that either don't really like to cook their own fish or with those that have not eaten better fish. The fact that this got such great feedback from Andrew Zimmern is BIZARRE!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
