About the Business
We specialize in the importing and roasting of coffee, and the importing of loose long leaf teas. Our coffees are roasted everyday, operating like a bakery. You can be confident that our coffees are very fresh. Our main roaster is located at 142 8th Street in Brooklyn. Most roasting and blending is done there. Blending occurs after roasting. We also roast at our main store located at 201 Bleecker Street in the Village. Some of our most exotic coffees are roasted there in small batches of 24lbs or less. We carry everything to do with coffee and tea including old-fashioned as well as state of the art brewing equipment, both commercial and home models. We sell La Pavoni, Bialetti, Hario, Chemex, Melitta, Clever Drippers, Saeco, & Gaggia brewers just to name a few. We take pride in servicing everything we sell and stock a vast number of different gaskets and parts for a wide variety of brewers. The 201 Bleecker Street store was established in 1907. The store originally catered to the large Italian influx that came to settle there at that time. We have been operating ever since.

Ah, I'm sitting at home enjoying some of the house blend beans I picked up a few days ago while in the city. I was at the Essex Market location, so the selection of beans is limited.
My favorite is the Haitian (an employee turned me on to it years ago) but it was not one at the Market location. Kind of disappointing, but I also knew whatever I brought home would also be perfection. And it is! I also got a half pound of the Costa Rican, which I have yet to try. As coffee prices have skyrocketed and/or being sold at 12 ounces instead of a pound, Porto Rico has maintained what I find to be a reasonable price for a superior product.
All staff is really knowledgeable and I normally just let them lead me to finding my new favorite coffee. I love coffee; while I can understand a great cup from an average to a terrible cup, I can't pick up any coffee tasting notes so I just let the experts do their thing!
Also, I brought along a punch card from BEFORE the start of the pandemic. They still are offering a loyalty program when other places have cut these programs to save money. Love it, and love this place!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Business owner information

Hi Teresa,
Thank you for your review! We really appreciate your years of patronage and it makes us very happy to hear that you enjoy our coffee. Also, thank you for mentioning our full pound prices! We pride ourselves in offering full pounds since many roasters now offer 12oz, as you mentioned.
We are happy to send your Haitian coffee to Essex Market if you let us know your order ahead of time.
Again, our deepest thanks and appreciation for your kind words. Happy New Year! - Ekaterina I.Los Angeles, CA33448Jan 8, 2024

I used to have a friend who lived on 1st and would pass Porto Rico Importing Co. I always thought it looked like a really cool store. It reminded me of a store in the neighborhood I grew up and loved. Porto Rico Importing Co. may be a small store but what it lacks in size is made up by the knowledge, helpfulness , and friendliness of the staff. You can buy coffee beans whole or ground; caffeinated or not. They have lovely teas and coffee and tea supplies. I would definitely go back again because it really is a very special place that is becoming more and more rare to find.

Tons of coffee selection here. Excellent bean choices and the option of making it a latte.
You can also conveniently purchase beans to bring home and grind.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ishmael A.Mott Haven, Bronx, NY117128Feb 25, 2023

This place is awesome. I wanted to start trying different coffee beans and this is a great place to start. they have a wide selection of beans and grind the beans (if you want) based on how you plan on brewing it. Personal favorite is the vienna costa rican

I have been coming to this location for more than three years, and I have to say it is one of the most pleasant, warm, and friendly experiences. The coffee is phenomenal, best iced americano. The staff is so nice and knowledgeable about the coffee. Every time I hear someone ask about what coffee or beans the staff recommends, they are very thoughtful about their response making sure that they understand what type of coffee the person likes. Jenny and all the staff are very knowledgeable and kind. This is easily my favorite neighborhood spot!

Was a great little store. Pretty much still is except for the rude socially incompetent young ladies behind the counter. I have been going to this store for about 25 years, probably before these young ladies were born and the employees were always so informative and FRIENDLY. I must've bought hundreds of pounds of coffee from Porto Rico's many locations. On 08/11/2023 at approximately noon time I stopped by the store and bought two coffees and received and extra dollar back in my change. I discreetly told the young blond lady of the mistake and she seemed bothered by the gesture, being borderline rude about it. I was really surprised by her behavior and called her up on it, she just walked away while another young blonde woman came to her defense and a third black haired young woman just stood there. AMAZING !

Hello Raul,
First and foremost, we are deeply sorry about the experience that you had at our St. Marks location. To be treated as you were, particularly after 25 years of patronage, is unacceptable. It is very frustrating for us to hear about an experience like yours. We value our customers and try to impress to our staff how important customer service is, but even so experiences like this can happen. These staff members that interacted with you do not at all reflect the values of Porto Rico.
Your review has been given to the manager of Saint Marks Place, not lightly. This staff must immediately correct their behavior or their employment will be terminated. We will not tolerate anything else but positive customer service from our employees.
Raul, we are very sorry. If you decide to visit us again (we hope you do), please ask for Jenny. Jenny is the manager of this location and has excellent customer service.
Thank you again for your years of patronage. It is customers like you that keep us in business.
Happy Holidays to you and yours. - Gray T.New York, NY5692Aug 3, 2023
you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone ...
a great store where i used to survey the color and size of the arrayed sacks of beans. i didn't even know how integral that experience was until i went in and the beans are cordoned off, and i was instead abruptly directed to the list of beans to order from. instead i walked to Porto Rico Importing's Bleeker Street location, picked up a nice dark peaberry, and will walk those extra blocks in the future.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Gray,
Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us. We are sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the current St. Marks layout…
During COVID we had partitions put up around the register and coffee beans to protect both staff and customers. By happenstance, the staff found that since customers were no longer lining up in the store (in front of the coffee beans), they were able to fill orders much faster. It’s a very narrow store!
The partitions came down recently. The staff requested that we keep the coffee blocked off from customers so that they could continue to move freely around the coffee beans, and fill orders efficiently. This may not be the layout forever. We appreciate your feedback, it helps to inform our decision on what to do in the store.
In the meantime, both the Bleecker Street and Essex Market stores have open customer access to the coffee beans. We hope that you will continue to visit us at these locations.
Thank you, Gray.
