I liked the drunk chicken mascot and racist "pie lady". The food made a turd . The turd was a good tird

Supposedly a bit of an Asheville landmark...for me, Picnics was a letdown.

The pulled chicken was too watery (and bland). The mashed potatoes were the high point of the meal. They were probably as flavorful as any mashed potatoes I've ever tasted.
If I hadn't been so disappointed in the food, I probably would have tried some dessert. The rhubarb pie did look heavenly.

Al in all, there are probably better representations of soul food and NC barbecue in Asheville than Picnics.

CLOSED - no more phenomenal pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving

The name is more appropriately stated as Picnics Bake Shop and Restaurant. The absolutely best pumpkin pie you will eat and this is the basis of my rating. If you go there for nothing else go for the pie. For years we ordered our thanksgiving pie from Picnics. It is one of those foods your taste buds do not forget. Going on a picnic. Call ahead to picnics and pick it up and head out into the natural beauty of the forests of the Appalachian trail. Just want to eat a truly southern home cooked meal. Dine in. The dining room is very small and the food good so they turn their tables rapidly. We usually get our food to go. But the best reason to go to picnics are the home baked pies. Pumpkin pie is a 5, others pies a 4 food a 3. Very limited parking.

The killed greens and smashed potatoes were awesome. The barbecue was decent. The pie--I think I had banana cream--was okay. The filling was divine, but the crust was tough from over-kneading. However, I did taste the love in every dish.
