It's a Sunday and one of my BFF's and I are bored. We decide to meet at the pub.
It's Sunday Football (boo for us), but strangely, the crowd is chill and the beers a-flowing. I order a bunch of food and you know -- it's all delicous and I am not even that drunk yet. I had bbq chicken quesadillas which I would normally poo-poo -- but it was deeeelish. When our bill came, we were blown away by the inexpensive price!
For Woodland Hills, it's adorable and in a nice spot with a nice group of folks that are chill and mellow. Like that.
Almost a real pub...
After traveling to England and Ireland, I'm a pretty tough critic but Pickwick's almost gets the pub "feel". They have all the standards on draft - Guiness, Harp, Boddington, Amstel. Dart boards are a must for a pub, and they have a few. The food can be pretty hit and miss, but the fish and chips are usually consistent.
The atmosphere varies quite a bit. Anywhere from the after work and "regulars" crowd to the 20's party crowd. It really depends on the night and the time. The limited live entertainment I've encountered has been mediocre at best, but the Guiness on draft more than makes up for it!
This is one of my favorite places to go for a great beer some good old fashion British bar fun and a great pub meal. I love the pot pies and the fish and chips. the prices are totally reasonable and the staff are always cool
just moved to this area, but Pickwicks was the first place that caught my attention. Drove by it while scoping out the neighborhood and when i found out they let you take your dogs (in the outdoor patio area) i was there. Showed up on a Sunday afternoon and had some Bass and a burger and Guiness (my dog) took advantage of the people watching and free water. I also went once on a Monday night to watch the Dodger game; mellow crowd but the bartendar was nice and so were the munchies.
Pickwicks where do I begin? . . . Since the 2005 fire I had a hard time recognizing you from the inside but it was much of a surprise as I calmly entered this watering hole. My game plan was low key as I was invited for Trivia night by my roommates. I have t o say hands down I had a blast! The onion rings were deeelish' and the beers got me nicely buzzed...key note: they didn't charge me an arm and a leg as these "revamped" dive's across the valley have done so to others I know. My only complaint is who ever hired the quiet nice hostess to do trivia must of been sleeping because we definitely needed a louder crowd starting hostess who could keep us awake. I ended my night short but will definitely be back for a non-trivial persuasion and perhaps have found a new bar other than spring-bok which is 2-10 minutes from my home...
Game-on Pickwick!
Tired of going to the same old places every weekend, I insisted we try someplace new. I felt like beer, so I looked up pubs, it was close by, and I've been a fan ever since.
The menu is interesting; the beer is good, and its fun. Seating can a little tough when its busy though. My favorite is the shepherds pie and fish and chips. I even had a grilled cheese once, really hit the spot. The burger was so so.
I never got to go to the old Pickwicks but I do like the new one!
Cool local bar. It gets the job done, however I've been here enough times to hit a few rough patches.
1) Parking can be a bummer. You'll probably have to hoof it from around the corner on the dark residential street during busy, late nights.
2) I've had a black-and-tan made strangely two times.
3) It can get too loud for a convo during live music nights.
On a happier note - I just discovered their food and it's tasty! If you want to check out the pub fare, be sure to go before it gets too ruckus. (FYI - 2 meals, 2 beers, tax & tip = $34) Also, Wednesday's Trivia Night had me feeling inadequate (who really knows all that random stuff??). BUT I did have a good time trying!
a group of us come here after work once a month. we're rarely here after 6 or so, so bear that in mind.
it's a fun local place to grab some beers and fries. the locals are all here at that time. free snacks are set out (just once, hurry up!). usually small pieces of sandwich and some fries. beers arent really all that cheap; service isnt fast but they're nice.
mostly its cool cuz we come here after work and get drinks! mac'n'cheese is ridiculously good. nachos are variable.
LUNCH... wait... is this the same place that burned down TWICE?
4 stars for the Fish Chips and Pint of Bass. It didn't get 5 Stars because it was kinda pricey for lunch. I remember going there on friday's and getting 3 pints before going back to work....pretending not to look bloated.
The place was clean. TV's showing futbol. You can eat outside or just have a smoke. Barkeep was nice. Service was good. I did like tables...they kinda felt like picnic tables at a park. Food was good. Bangers N Mash, Pies, peas... Fish N Chips. Good atmosphere. Wasn't super crowded....but crowded enough...to get the feeling.....wow i'm not a drunk afterall.
Pickwick Pub gets 4 stars.
I really liked this place since it wasn't as loud as some of the other Irish pubs in the area during St. Patrick's Day and the food was really good. Had the Guinness Stew for ten bucks and I'm still raving over the flavor of the broth. Surprisingly I didn't see Guinness on tap on one of their 13 taps. Very odd. Fish and Chips were a wee more expensive and you only get one filet but it is massive. Fries were crisp and tasty. If there's any problem here, it's that it's too small in size. Easy to get crowded fast and not enough tables in the place so ended up eating at the bar. Parking is in the back but limited. Still, had no problem getting a spot even at 10.
I'm glad it reopened, sad that its not quite the same.
I go there once in awhile with my friend to have a beer, but it gets pretty crowded and noisy. It is quite small, but it has a good atmosphere and good beer.
pickwicks is a good place to go anytime but after 10 or so. I don't know if its just bad luck but there is always some kind of drama going on here. Bouncers can be a bit on the rough side sometimes and seem like they're looking for someone to punch in the face. Once you're in though, there beer is fine and the food is decent. Not memorable place though, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere
Some crazy fool burned the place down a few months ago. Now it's back and WAY better than before.
The little bar has been replaced with a much longer one running the side wall. The have added several ales on tap and of course they still have Guinness!
The pub grub got a lot better too. The Pickwick Pie is worth a try and the chips are nice, thick cut and very crispy!
Parking is still a bitch on Ventura during the dinner rush but later, after the restaurants empty out it's not to bad.
Welcome back Pickwick!
For a bar within walking distance of my house, Pickwick's is perfectly adequate. If it wasn't my "local," I probably would not return, but hey, in this neighborhood the bars are few and far between.
I enjoy the beer selection and the prices are reasonable. The "scene," such as it is, is laid back and unpretentious. The staff is friendly and fun and the bartenders do a great job, even when it's busy. I haven't eaten there yet but I probably will give the food a try at some point.
The last time we were there, an atrocious guitarist was playing overdone covers of pop hits ranging from Coldplay to Credence Clearwater Revival. Naturally, we chose to sit out on the small but relatively quiet patio.
When my friend called me up and said, "Hey Jackie, come with us to Pickwick". I thought, "sure, I'll go ice skating". I'm from Glendale and Pickwick has always been an ice skating rink in Burbank to me.
Anyhow, this was a pretty chill "Pub" in the "Valley", a bit small though. It got really packed for a couple of hours but there was a good vibe inside and out. My margarita was ok, I expect salt on the rim of the cup thank you very much. Beer was a bit expensive compared to Nor Cal, but I should have known. There was a few older men who could not stop staring at us...you know, those people who freak you out with staring and then you stare back and they still stare at you? Those people can be a bit obnoxiously or maybe I'm just sensitive.
Cons:
Parking
small
hard to find seats
Pros:
Live music (awesome)
Stella beer allowed me to have a great time.
Overall, I had I liked the atmosphere and had a fun night with my friends.
I like Pickwicks. The food here is really yummy (try the fish and chips), and they have a great selection of beers on tap to wash it down with. The service is excellent, too.
I went here for trivia night, and my I just realized my friends and I aren't exactly, oh, how do you say, the sharpest tools in the shed. Maybe the questions weren't geared towards our demo, but we should at least know Maya Angelou's real name, right? Whatevs.
One of my fave characters from The Office was there too. Thankfully, he didn't stay long enough to witness me and my team's annihilation.
I miss the old Pickwicks. I understand the temptation to turn your establishment into a British-themed T.G.I.Friday's after it's firebombed so you can once again turn a profit, but seriously, this place has seen better days.
Before it burned out back in 2005 my buddy and I would visit this place twice weekly for beers, darts, and fun. Before that I heard tale of the bar where my mother used to play darts in a league. The place had a lot of heart with it's loooong wooden tables, tiny bar space, back room with golden tee and foosball and Bob Cowsil crooning the hits on Friday nights.
Now it's mediocre at best. The beers cost too much, the waitresses are hot, but don't split the bills right and just do a poor job of keeping us in imbibables while we're there.
Old Pickwicks - ****
New Pcikwicks - **
Yes yes... So they've got Boddington's, Harp, Guiness, hell... they've even got Tetley's Ale on tap. So they have a good selection of beers and the patrons are friendly and all, as is the staff.
Here's a thought: TURN THE LIGHTS DOWN... WAY DOWN! This is supposed to be a British pub, right? Where's the puke on the sticky floor? This place is way too bright and errr... I don't *want* to see the decor here, it looks way too much like some Denny's that's been remodeled to look like a British pub. All I want is darkness and a cute waitress to serve pint after pint of Guiness. Actually check that... they got the cute waitress.
Get an interior designer in here to make this place look like a real pub. Right now it just doesn't give me the touchy feelies... We got a couple of pints and we quickly got the fuck out. A proper pub should be so damn dark that it makes it damn near impossible to step outside unless you're stone cold sober.
Anyway, I won't languish on this thought... Yes, it's a semblance of a British pub, but the people who own this joint still have a long way to go to make t his place authentic. Showing football (Soccer, not American football) on the telly just ain't enough. And you're serving British food, so it's not like you'll attract a client with your delicate cuisine, ok?
Not bad for Woodland hills-home of the old, land of the bored. Its a family owned, family run place where the bartenders know your name. It ain't cheers, but a spacious inside and a front patio for smoking/hanging out. Three dart boards, and occassionally a live band. Has a tendency to close early, sometimes as early as 11:30. Which is fine because at that point your good and trashed and can go to Paolis to watch socially awkward people sing. They serve food as well, although I've never eaten there. Decent place to watch a game, hang out and drink.
Okay so this bar ain't that bad, especially because it is located in the SFV. Nice small bar, good prices, nice employees. Not much to say except a good old fashioned dive bar in the valley.
I really like this place. Its a great little bar to go to with a wide variety of beers. Great live music. Crappy parking. Good luck.
I'm writing this review with Pickwick's first as a restaurant and next, a pub. The food is the best. The fish and chips are the best anyone will find in California. The Shepherds pie is also a jem. The service is great and I know that it was run by an English family, so the vibe in there was real. As a bar, it's alot of fun. It's a bit pricey, but it has class. It's not a dive like most in the valley. The live performers are great in that they know every bar song ever written. Neil diamond and journey are always rocking the place. Give it a shot, you won't be let down.
Much better than that other pub in Woodland Hills. We watched England vs Portugal here over the summer and the staff was awesome despite the place being well beyond full. This place will serve you your pint in an actual pint glass instead of a plastic cup with Miller on it like The White Hearte did last time out. The food overall is quite good and the drinks are reasonable
probably a fine place for the 35+ crowd but not for me. the service wasn't great the last time i was there, some people really like the live music but i thought cranking it to 11 was a little too much.
