My siblings and I are doing some cleaning of a home in the area. We need to take a lunch break. This restaurant is within walking distance from said home. It's my first time here, so I don't know what to expect.
Upon arriving we (6 of us) are seated right away. Service is quick. The employees here are attentive. The waitress asks us if we want to sit comfortably at another table for eight people. Yes!
Upon perusing the menu, I know what I want for lunch - my usual at any Vietnamese restaurant. I need to try other dishes, but I just can't stay away from #21 which is the bún thit nuóng cha giò (grilled pork and egg roll with vermicelli). Choice of beverage is fresh lemonade. My lunch was on point - quite enjoyable. The fresh lemonade is tart and refreshing. I should have asked if they serve iced tea. I could have had an Arnie Palmer. LOL
The restaurant has indoor and outdoor dining. The interior walls of the restaurant are adorned with beautiful artwork. I would not mind returning to try other items on their menu.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - 12094611600Jan 13, 2024
Surprisingly so delicious!!! Humble restaurant with awesome food.
I exercised in the morning so I wanted something filling but not too heavy for lunch. THIS PLACE HIT THE SPOT. I ordered #36 (Bún Bò Nuong Vi, Cha Giò) which was Grilled Beef, Egg Roll with Vermicelli. IT WAS SOOO GOOD. The combination of everything was incredibly tasty! The beef was seasoned well, flavorful, tender, and not dry. The eggroll was fried to perfection! All the vegetables were fresh. And THAT SAUCE! The perfect compliment to the food. Truly enjoyed making every bite different (some with noodle, some with spicy sauce, etc). An addicting meal! I highly recommend #36!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dec 16, 2023Updated review
Last time I dined here it was for lunch, pre pandemic, and much cheaper. Pho bowls are now $12.50, $13.50, and $14.50. Around $4 more per bowl size than before.
The restaurant is cleaner and more organized than what I remembered. Liked the Pho, Bun, and Egg Rolls which were smaller but crunchier and packed solid with filling. All were tasty!
Sketchy parking lot, don't leave valuables in the car.Helpful 5Thanks 1Love this 6Oh no 0Feb 12, 2020Previous reviewWhen you think of Oakland, you think tough, rough, hard working, blue collar, Lake Merritt, jilted by the Warriors and Raiders, Mormon Temple, painted watermelon and orange rock near the airport rental car center, beautiful one tower bridge, and inexpensive good eats for hard working people! Pho King falls into the last descriptor.
PK located a block away from beautiful but sometime smelly Lake Merritt. Fairly large restaurant located in the same strip mall that used to house the famous Merritt Bakery. Plenty of parking. Also NOISY as a family restaurant should be.
Went for a small bowl of Pho for $8.50 which is plenty nuf for lunch. Many options (lots of Pho choices) and sizes (also $9.50 and $10.50). Food brought out really fast and hot. Tasty stock and good quality beef choices. Pay at the counter when done. - Mar 10, 20243 check-ins
Service was swift but the shredded pork was just a few tiny bits. Fortunately for them I was very hungry but the purposeful false advertising will prevent me from returning. Too bad. Oakland's Asian cuisine continues to disappoint.

The portion size was generous, but unfortunately, the soup base was overwhelmingly salty for us. We ended up guzzling water just to quench our thirst after eating it

The Bun Bo Hue had a decent flavor, although it didn't particularly stand out. The soup had a good level of spiciness, and the inclusion of beef, pork blood, and pork cake added some variety to the dish. However, I found the taste to be average, without any exceptional elements.
Regarding the Spring Rolls and Egg Rolls, they were satisfactory, but they didn't leave a lasting impression. The flavors were acceptable, but I felt that they could have been more flavorful and distinctive.
In summary, the food at Pho King was decent and tasted okay. While nothing was particularly outstanding, it wasn't disappointing either. It would be great if they could focus on enhancing the flavors to make the dishes more memorable. - Nov 9, 2023
Been meaning to check out Pho King for a while. I finally had a chance recently and it was okay but not amazing.
I came for an early dinner around 4:30 and it was pretty empty. They have both outdoor and indoor seating, but since it was a bit chilly out, we opted to sit inside. There's plenty of seating both inside and outside.
The menu is pretty large with all of your standard Vietnamese offerings: various appetizers, pho and other noodle soups, vermicelli bowls, and a ton of rice dishes.
I was starving, so I ordered A13 thit cuon (grilled pork roll) for $9.50 as well as a large bowl of the #5 pho with eye of round steak, well done flank, and tendon ($13.50).
The grilled pork roll was delicious, though I found the grilled pork a bit tough to chew. For the pho, the broth was very flavorful. However, I wasn't impressed with the amount of tendon I got (2 tiny pieces), and the fact that they were still hard to chew. Good tendon should be melt in your mouth soft, and that wasn't the case here. Tendon is my favorite meat in pho, so I was disappointed in my bowl.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Gin S.Oakland, CA2346639Apr 16, 2024
If you like beef noodle soup, this is one of the places to go. Unfortunatey, I do not eat beef and ordered their seafood noodle soup and their broth had no flavor. There are two other noodle places near by with better flavor if you don't eat beef.

Solid place to get Vietnamese food. Been here with friends and family. Perfect place to eat when it's cold outside (but also just as good on a summer day). Staff is friendly and there is plenty of seating, both indoors and outdoors. Recommend to anyone who is in the area!
