I'm new to this business, or it is new to me. I just heard about it. From the street (Just East of the Pasadena High School Farmer's market) this place looks like a commercial growing grounds, but they are open to the public.
I would say their prices are between wholesale and retail.
We bought a flat of beautiful pansies for $10.
We bought Calla Lillies 1 gallon under $10 (can't remember the exact price). The employees are very helpful with information and loading your car.
This is a big place, it's fun to wander. There are vegetables, demo gardens, a big shade section, low water plants, California natives, drought resistant plants ,and lots of landscape plants. You must visit this nursery garden.
They are open Mon - Sat 8:00- 4:30. Call before you go, they are closed when it rains. (how often does it rain in So Cal?) Parking is easy. The road in is lumpy. Don't bring a low slung car.
If you're the owner of this business, you might talk with Yelp about why it doesn't show up on most of the searches...Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jun 15, 2010Previous reviewI'm new to this business, or it is new to me. Woo Hoo, another nursery to review, yes this is how I spend my weekends, between gardens, arboretums, and nurseries, OMG am I a butterfly is that why I like Mimi Carey so much...??? so many questions....
Anyway, love this place, agree moderate pricing, expensive on some. Mmm their roses are cheap and great. I think am gonna go back and get their roses, great, great, great selections.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ghost E.London, United Kingdom177327Mar 5, 2008First to Review
Persson's have everything your're looking for in a nursery:
Selection
Quality
Knowledge
It's moderately priced but worth it for the quality and selection. The staff is SUPER helpful and friendly. It's completely outside so a great environment for just browsing for hours in the open air and sun. Kind of hard to find if you're not looking for the driveway RIGHT BEFORE PHS on Sierra Madre Blvd :)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alex Z.Sacramento, CA914015Jul 8, 2010
Driving by this place all of the time -- and hearing the garden types talk about how great it was -- I finally went in to populate my front yard with some long overdue landscaping.
Showed the lady at the desk my plan told her how much money I was planning on spending...and she pointed me to the cart and said "If you actually spend more than $200 I'll give you 10% off"....and that was the extent of her help.
They may have everything you are looking for - but if you are looking for service...go somewhere else. For the additional money they charge above something like a Home Depot -- I would have thought they were charging more for their expert servive...nope - just extra for the sake of charging extra.
Looked at the cart, walked around to see what they had -- and went to my car and drove to Home Depot where we got everything plus service.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ruth S.Pasadena, CA031Sep 11, 2011
Persson's shut their door and left plants and trees to die... it is ugly.. looks like the holocaust, what a shame.. and I used to buy from there. these were living creatures and they were left to die. shame on them. at least they could have had a sale or something. I do animal rescue and this is just as bad... leaving creatures to die. Think about it.

Heard a lot about this place and I liked their variety and location. However, I had to deal with a knowledgeable but quite impatient representative . I had a pretty large order in mind but he immediately assessed our needs and made a quick judgment regarding what they were and sent us to a nursery better known for their native varieties. Not a good thing. Specially because we were happy with what they had right there. Not ruling the place out yet.

Ok...here's the TRUTH !!! We have shopped this nursery for YEARS. All of the reviews offer some truth. They are pricey on most plants. They have the best selection in the area. Their service leaves LOTS to be desired. BUT we keep going back because we find what we want, we have made friends with the helpers who actually HELP. Our biggest complaint is that they are closed Sundays. WHAT ??? If Home Depot and Armstrongs are too generic for you go to Perrson's...you'll find something to love about it.

I like Persson's Nursery. I want to like it more, but they are closed on Sunday AND they were not open during posted business hours this Saturday (7/16/2011)! I was really confused.
They have an especially broad selection of trees that are of the size an average homeowner can move and plant without much difficulty. They also have a good number of trees of each variety in stock, so you may choose the best quality of tree in the lot.
You can save a lot of wandering time if you drive to the office (end of the drive) and ask for assistance. They are great about helping those who ask, but I like that I can wander and not be bothered or "sold" on something.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - M G.Pasadena, CA036Feb 4, 2011
Large selection
This is an almost entirely outdoor operation. Large area with a wide selection of plants. Since I didn't have a lot of time to check out the place I walked up to one of the employees and asked. Was promptly showed the varieties. The employee had a hollering conversation going in Spanish the whole time with another person. The employee hauled the large item into my car which was helpful but since he seemed kind of busy with the other guy there was no room to talk about the plant or other plants or advice etc. The cash register was indoors in something that looked like a shed.
Bumpy dirt/cement? driveway but free parking.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
