My lovely younger sister gave me a $25 gift card to Peet's, and I figured, it's a beautiful day out... why not mozy on down to Pacific Heights for an iced coffee?
The only time I'd ever had Peet's coffee before was at one of their kiosks in SFO and I was never very impressed with their coffee or their chai lattes. Today, however, was a different day and a different Peet's!
Right now I have a killer sore throat and wanted something icy and smooth. I opted for the caramel freddo sans whipped cream. Whoo-wee! I slurped the whole thing up in record time and didn't even get a brain freeze! All the dairy wasn't very good for my achy throat so I figured I should wash it down with some green tea. The guy at the counter was very helpful in helping my make my selection of which green tea I wanted (They had soooo many teas!!!) and instead of the tea being pre-bagged they put the loose leaves in a bag right in front of my eyes! Now THAT'S quality!
Too bad I missed my bus while they were bagging the tea. Oh, well. As I said, today was a beautiful day and it probably did me some good to get a little sun on my pale San Franciscan skin.

it's Peet's. I don't drink coffee, but I tasted some. I guess it was good. The small is $3.20. I'm assuming that's the going rate, but IMHO, that seems a little expensive.
Anyway, It was a nice walk up to the shop and we got there at 8:55PM and they were ready and willing to serve us. Anyway, thumbs up for the service as well.
Might not be the most reliable review since I only went here for the first time today but here goes!
Place was nice, pretty large compared to my usual Peet's at West Portal, but the people weren't as friendly. C'mon, get in the holiday spirit! My friend's pumpkin spice latte contained a bit more latte than pumpkin spice & my peppermint mocha was pretty good. As much as I hate to say this, Starbucks is a bit better at the sweet drinks although I will forever worship Peet's coffee!

The soy lattes are perfect!
This place is the busiest coffee shop in town and yet, the wait is minimal.
great place to meet with friends for coffee.

The Fillmore Peet's is like cheating--fun, exciting, and wrong. But when Bittersweet isn't putting out, I have no choice.
Bittersweet is my first choice for coffee on Fillmore because it brews Blue Bottle and has a kickass staff. HOWEVER, those damn bastards don't open until 10am and sometimes I can't wait that long for my morning fix. (note: "damn bastards" is a term of endearment).
Enter: Peet's. The coffee is great and so is the staff here. The pastries are doable--and again, so is the staff. (Kidding! Do-ability does not enter into the equation...I can't imagine doing ANYTHING until I've coffeed-up).
My only reservation is the placement of the half&half/sugar station at the end of the bar. It gets cramped with people at their crankiest--that is, me and my coffee-hooked brethren just prior to our first hit of the day. Despite this, I still love Peet's--my coffee action on the side.
Just don't tell Bittersweet.

A daily stroll and ritual. For those who enjoy coffee, peets is the one. People say their tea and bar drinks are good too, but I always stick with my medium drip.
Great people, personal hellos...they even elect a customer of the week.
You will always see the same cliche of retired youth on the bench every morning from 7am to 10am, playing scrabble, reading the paper, drawing art and discussing the issues raised in the daily paper. - they are all welcoming and make this place feel like a "spot"
They even now offer WI-FI, but for preferred customers only and for only 2 hours.
I give peets, Faron and all the staff my High Five Stamp... well done

This is the Peet's for people watching. Peet's is greater than Coffee Bean is greater than Starbucks. Starbucks is serving water as far as I'm concerned. All that's missing at this Fillmore intersection is a fourth coffee place.
There's a Peets inside the Kabuki Theater.
It's at the top of the escalators, on the mezzanine. It's not in the Peets company directory, but it has a sign outside the building and another one on the store.
It's operated by the Kabuki Theater.
Besides the usual coffee, tea, and pastries, it has candy and soft drinks. There don't appear to be any hot dogs or popcorn, though.
We purchased two chocolate-dipped coconut macaroons, a hot tea, and a diet Coke for $8.25, and then we retreated to a nearby lounge to enjoy our wait for the movie.

Got a great seat today on the sunny side of the block outside so I could enjoy my Jasmine Fancy tea. Always crowded here but people are friendly and let you share a table with them. Great selection of exotic beans for home grinding. Their house coffee is varied as well. Wireless is free here of course. Gotta be one of my favorite spots on Fillmore:)

A great coffee shop to stop in while shopping along Fillmore. (You can also find them almost anywhere else in the city as well) Try the the dark chocolate freddo!
This place will offer you an amazing cup of coffee. Everyday. The coffee is consistently fantastic and the staff is very friendly and fast....unlike other coffee shops across the street (ahem, coffee bean).
This neighborhood institution is a cute hangout. Watch out for the man with the pit bull who on occasion might threaten your dog.

The best coffee in the universe.
Surely, as Zrogloiy wears weary flying from Orion to Polaris, he'll/she'll (like frogs, Inklidorians like Zrogloiy are simultaneously both sexes) stop by this dumptser hut of a planet and politely buy a large cup of the intergalactic fav.
Major Dickason is in fact retired from the Inklidorian Air Force.
In short, out of this world.

Peet's beats! ....any coffee shop like Starbucks or Beans & Co. :)
I must say the quality of coffee is super duper quadruple better than Starbucks or any of those chain joints.
Coffee: Very rich in flavor, has the caffeine to keep you going, and if you order a more sweet drink it doesn't feel like you're drinking a cup of liquefied sugar. It defeats the purpose of coffee if you are bombarded by sugar, Starbucks ;) you can actually taste the coffee (which I love as a coffee addict). I usually order the house coffee, with a splash of hazelnut, or my usual soy hazelnut (1 pump of it) latte. The drinks never fail. The teas are always superb too. I like the green tea, just be aware because if you're impatient like me, it'll scorch the crap out of your mouth if you don't wait for it to cool down.
Service: Always so welcoming and nice! The employees (even the customers) are pleasant, and prompt with the service. On weekend mornings I love walking in and seeing all the customers and their dogs. :)
I've gone here for YEARS, and will continue to visit!

1. I dont understand what takes so long.
2. Why is my americano lukewarm?
3. Why are the above 2 always true?
Gets the big EH out of me.
So I just walked all the way down to Fillmore from Lyon St. for the sole purpose of reviewing this Peet's.
I know this one well, but I don't frequent it much any more, because I have a little problem and I don't know how to fix it.
See, almost two years ago one of my buddies lived in the hood so we'd meet up for coffee a couple of times a week. Since neither of us were working regular jobs our coffee sessions came at odd times. Fortunately for us it meant that Peet's was never crowded (as it was at quarter to 9 this morning,) but unfortunately that makes the experience a bit less anonymous.
So after four or five visits I noticed a really uncomfortable trend: there was this women, about my age, maybe a few years older who was always there when we were there. She's tan, very fit, always in athletic clothes. I'm not trying to tell you I'm attracted to her, because I'm not, but I'm telling you I couldn't shake this broad.
To this day I haven't exchanged a word with her, but she keeps popping up, not only at Peet's anymore. I see her running, I see her at brunch. And in different neighborhoods, too.
She acts like she's never noticed me, which is ridiculous, but every once in awhile she'll give a look over her shoulder while jogging, and I never have time to throw up my arms to say "It ain't me."
I mean on paper I'm like one of the 6 least threatening guys in San Francisco. I'm short and I'm round and warm and fuzzy and all of a sudden I'm the stalker? F that!
Doesn't this person do her homework? Hasn't she done a composite sketch of me and fed into the new Google Image Identifier and run a full background and credit check on me yet?
Jeez, I just want an F-ing coffee lady, stop following me!
Anyway, she wasn't there today.

Oh the joy of being back in the heartland of Peet's Coffee. Yes, Boston does have one Peet's, but was located far from where I lived and worked and required a lot of engineering to get there. I used to save a section of my suitcase just to take 20 pounds of Peet's beans back to Boston when I'd visit my family back home in Oakland.
Now, I consider this MY Peet's. The service is incredible -- they are savvy to the personal angst of their customers and speed it up when they sense you're running late, but also are friendly and chat if you have more time.
My favorites are the Major Dickason's, and the Sumatra.
I do wish this location would give more attention to the restroom -- it tends to be grimy and in need of deep cleaning as well as ongoing tidying throughout the day. I know there are a couple of habitual homeless who make this Peet's their HQ, and wonder if they might even be recruited (and paid) to keep an eye on things?

People that write reviews for chain restaurants / establishments are idiots. I am also an Idiot.
I order a large coffee and they don't fuck it up. What more can I ask for.

I try really hard not to buy from chains, but I get to work really early (around 7am) most days, which means two things:
1. Most of the other coffee shops I like are barely open at 6:50/7 so that limits my options.
2. I need something stronger than hell to keep me awake all day at work.
Peets meets both requirements with flying colors. They open early, but they are hardly ever crowded around 7 so I can get my coffee & scone without a line. And, their coffee makes me twitch. I get headaches when I try and drink most other coffee now.
One thing--I've gone to this Peets almost every Monday-Friday for the past 8 months now and I order the exact same thing every morning, but they still have to ask. Aren't I a regular yet?

This is hands-down best Peet's in the universe.
I haven't been to every Peet's in the universe, but I've definitely been to more than my fair share all over the bay area, in NY (JFK) and Massachusetts. The Sacramento / California Peet's is by far the best.
Why?
1. Fast service - walk in on any morning and your heart sinks looking at the 10+ person line... you think, "do I really have time for this before dashing off to work?"... but you know you NEED the caffeine, so you settle into the end of the line. Within 3 minutes, you're the next person up. It really moves that smoothly and swiftly.
2. Friendly staff - fun, courteous, professional, seem to really enjoy their jobs
3. Very fresh coffee
The staff is so well managed here - you can tell because people seem genuinely happy about being at work (okay, nobody is hopping in the air clicking their heels together, but you get it - nobody looks miserable) and the service is just phenomenally professional and swift.

As a fomer employee of this Peet's, am I allowed to rate it?
I'm going to,
I worked at the Pacific Heights Peet's for 2 years. And I loved it. Prior to working at the this Peet's, I worked at the Peet's in Walnut Creek. While vastly differerent, I loved both.
The Head honcho here though, Brian Chew, WOW...I can not compliment him enough. He has the CUTEST, NICEST little kids that his cute wife brings in a few times a week. The staff know and love all of them. He himself is one of the nicest person's I have ever known. And he really creates a family-like atmosphere in the store with both the employees and the customers.
The coffee there is THE best. Always fresh people, always fresh.
The pastries are delievered every morning and not kept the next day.
The specialty drinks are made by employees that have been working there and making the same drinks for years.
I really can not say enough good stuff about this place.

This is my favorite Peet's.
I miss Brian, (the old manager), but it still has the location and the ambiance. I am a little biased, as the place has sentimental history for me. The customers matter just as much as the staff, and this place wins on that. Good people watching.

Peet's is a paradox to me. It's a chain coffeehouse, yet somehow manages to seem so genuine, so local, and so quality. Would take a cup of bold Peet's joe over most anything from Starbucks - and their pastries (not to mention chocolate-covered cherries) blow the Bux out of the water. A truly heartwarming place.
What pleases me most about this particular Peet's is that it makes for the perfect lazy, sunny Sunday: grab a paper, stroll down to the Fillmore Peet's and join the friendly neighbors at a seat along the lengthy bar next to the window, soak in the aromas of fresh coffee and sip my latte. Maybe stop by Browser Books on the way out, pet a few overzealous dogs, hit up Alta Plaza Park and take a nap on the grass. All while breathing in a cool Pacific breeze. Ah me, San Francisco is the greatest.
May 2008
Tried cappucinos three times since Brian left and the brew is never consistently PEET-y. Such a disappointment. Once there was some skinny, meth looking barrista that just couldn't get the rhthym and flavor right with the espresso and steamed milk and I watched the other three people by the sugar and stir sticks with their wrinkled nose expressions on their face...later saw one even dump the cap, into the garbage bin on Fillmore street...right in front of Peet's...guess he really thought it sucked.
Well, I still get my beans here once a year...yes, moving towards Blue Bottle beans...

Thanks Brian Ip Chew,
former (1999-2007?) Store Manager of Peet's Coffee @2197 Fillmore!!!!!!!!!!
You have always hired and trained your staff really well to make great cappucinos and okay service...by that I mean that I have NEVER had a server that was a NIHILIST Landmark Theatre Punksterwhodoesn't giveashaitboutanythingbutlivingintheirshaittyworld type of delivery.
Thanks for the eight year run on FIllmore.
I guess Josel Nelson is a standby employee reaching his 10 year mark in December and the new manager, Jonathan Gray...(hey wonder if he read that Women are from Venus, Men from Mars book?!)
Thanks Brian, and best wishes for wonderful things in your next adventure!!!!!!! The neighborhood will miss you.

Only for iron stomachs that can take the strongest brew to be found on Fillmoe, filled with lecherous gut bellied men on the weekdays mid day that are waiting for Catholic teenage girls to walk by. Just get it to go and window shop till you finish that java, or walk up to Broadway for a view of why you decided to live here. You don't live to work cuz they are gonna outsource your job to Inja before ya save enuff fo yo retirement, dude.

Strong coffee (slightly over roasted) but good and thick. Get the Americano, it is better than a cup of coffee and made fresh.
Good service. This is one of three coffee places on this particular corner and the other two are terrible (starbucks and coffee bean & tea leaf) so contrast, Peet's shines here.

I have to say, Peet's quality of coffee is definitely waaaayy better than Starbuck's. Though occassionally I still make a Starbucks stop, only because it is convenient for it is scattered on every corner and is open later.
I stopped by this Peet's after a workout at my gym around the corner on California, knowing that I had to drive an hour and half to Sacramento, and needed a caffeine boost. I went in (it was quite quiet for a Friday), the nice man took my order, and the very friendly barista took her time to make me my hot, delicious nonfat, hazelnut latte. I wanted to hang out there a little longer because a nice gentleman was sitting at the table next to me, waiting for his order, but I was on a time crunch.
I felt a little ashamed for bringing in my Starbucks coffee mug to be filled with Peet's Coffee. Tsk tsk on me....
Such a cute neighborhood scene, with young families and elderly people reading the paper, and friendly greetings between neighbors, that it kind of makes me sick. Why are rich white people so...idyllic?
Good coffee, though. And this is a pretty efficient coffee shop considering the high volume of orders. I usually get my drink within a minute. And they have Splenda.

I can't believe I'm reviewing a Peets coffee shop, but I have to say that this one is a little bit different ... I've been an occasional visitor for the last 8 years, but when I recently moved 2 blocks away and decided to give away my coffee maker, I gained a whole new appreciation for the place.
The people who work there are sweet, patient. always smiling, AND they know their customers. Every morning they start off my day the right way, even that rainy morning when I spilled coffee all over everything! This is on my list of top twenty things I love about San Francisco ....

This place has the cutest lounge area of all the Peet's I've been too. The plus side with this one is that you can sit inside or out and sip your green tea smoothie or coffee!
As the main competitor to my beloved Coffee Bean across the street, I have to say on principal that I'm not a fan.
Honestly it is a bit too crowded all the time and their hot chocolate's WAY less than great (I'm not a coffee drinker, but am however a hot chocolate connoisseur).
Best thing here are the breads & muffins - SO bad for you, yet sooo good.
I like Peet's coffee. It's strong and they have lots of milk choices.
This Peet's loses a point because it's ridiculously crowded weekday mornings, which is when I want Peet's most.
This makes Peet's stop #3...
The Fillmore Peet's is pretty small and overall pretty unremarkable. I didn't get a "neighborhood paper-readers" vibe so much as a "busy shoppers resting their feet" vibe. Actually I was one of those busy shoppers, and it being a sunny afternoon, I was looking for something cool and refreshing, so I tried the jasmine lime tea cooler. I'm always wary of drinks like this, lest they turn out to be glorified sugar-water, but it did in fact taste like a thoughtful combination of lime and fragrant tea. Interesting but not for everyone.
When I'm dragging around, I know Peet's will cure me. This place is phenomenal. Wonderfully potent coffee and a staff that is not only kind but also quick. In no time, any worker there can whip up a tasty drink that will knock you over.
Peet's can also be a magnet for people who love "displaying" their ideologies, and an Anti-Bush sign usually populates the outside. We all know, buddy... he sucks, now take your sign down: if that's how you make a difference, then rebellion and dissidence is dead. "Revolutionaries" in this country are soft and milk fed. Like the steaming frothy milk in that yummy Latte being consumed on "Freedom Corner."
Peet's should also come with a dog check, because I have trouble getting around all the pooches and their doting owners who only know the names of other dogs, not the dog owners themselves... ah, the lonesome, crowded west.
So- the coffee is great, I feel lucky to have one in my neighborhood. The only drawbacks are the armchair revolutionaries who feel like they're making a difference by posting signs about the obvious. Hey, "Che": I'm scared to see how many bumper stickers you have on the back of your 1985 Volvo. Now, that's making a change!
PS- great coffee

I'm lovin' the cream-cheese frosted ginger bread cake lately. yum-yum.
Thank god they don't do it year-round.
Other than that, this place is a scene. Who are these people that sit outside EVERY morning with their dogs? I'm jealous!
i went to peet's tonight due to a sweet tooth craving and more importantly because my stomach was growling. i asked for a slice of banana bread, but the lady behind the counter gave me to slices for the price of one! SCORE! the banana bread was nice and thick, banana-ey, but not overly oily and greasy like most banana breads nowadays.
awesome-ness.
I say "Fill me more"!
A great location for reading and people watching on a Saturday or Sunday. Easier to find parking on a Sunday though.
If you want to build a coffee-table book (what else would it be when you are at a cafe!) of faces and styles from SF, sit on the side-street with a camera and shoot at sight. You will not be disappointed.
And hey, next time you see a guy sitting outside with a book, and occasionally lifting up his head to get a glimpse of some great legs, please say "Hi"!
Peet's...
I love you.
I need you.
The Fillmore Peet's is my favorite Peet's by far. Luckily, it's right around the corner from me! LOVE my soy Americano, especially if the nice man with the ponytail makes it. Perfect foam, every time. Everyone is friendly, people bring/buy their own newspapers and leave them behind for other customers, and the line always moves quickly. Good people watching, too. Not sure what I'd do without this place providing my daily cuppa joe.
Also, props on somehow shooing the birds away. Used to be a bit of a problem, especially on weekends.
I like this place, but it's always ridiculously crowded. There is never anywhere to sit, and when they shoot you off to the end of the counter to wait for your coffee, you have to constantly shift back and forth for others to get into the line, pick up their coffee, or get lids and other fixings. (By my calculation, people must either have connections on the inside or camp out overnight on Fillmore in order to get a table in there on the weekends.)
That being said (whew!), it's the best coffee of the Starbucks/Peets/Coffee Bean caffeine triangle at Fillmore/Sacramento... and their pumpkin bread is very, very tasty!
Like Neo, if you don't make the right choice, you'll never know the truth.
Best coffee in the Bay area. The Fillmore Peet's has fantastic staff and the manager Bryan runs a great shop. Drip is strong, you can taste the coffee in your latte and they have a great selection of Tea.
Give it a try and by your second time you'll be hooked.
Drink local, think global!!!
