I hate to be the party pooper, but I remember twice I encountered PR. The first when my radiator cracked and failed on the road. I was close to PR, and I thought being a miata specialty shop, they could fix my miata up. Well only after $450 later in parts and labor. I said no thanks, I'll test my luck and drive it home and fix it myself-which I did do in roughly 3 hours with some home tools. A second occasion I was feeling lazy and wanted a sway bar installed on my miata....the quote was in the ball park of $120 dollars. Pretty pricey for such a simple job. I'm sure these guys know what they are doing, and their lobby staff is quite friendly. But the prices are beyond me...

Trustworthy and affordable - who can say THAT about their auto service? Very few people ... and, if they can, they are most likely PR Motorsports customers!
My car feel safe in their capable hands. Just like most people, I depend heavily on my car so knowing that they are taking good care of it very important. As important to me, they treat me w/ respect. They are friendly and explain things to me in layman's terms so I don't feel ignorant or like I'm getting duped. I really appreciate that.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I came in to get my old Lexus a quick check before driving it from CA to TX. The car is very old and hasn't been looked at in over a year. They only charge a $60 diagnostic fee. The shop was very upfront about the necessary repairs and gave me a list of repairs that should be completed in the near future. The actual cost came back a little less than the estimate and was repaired in the time estimated.
Brianna was very helpful and provided up transportation in the area while we waited for our car to be repaired.
Overall, I am very happy with this shop and would recommend them to anyone looking for a mechanic. They really know what they are doing and my car is running good as new. -

Took my '06 Miata here for a check engine light and multiple leaks. I scheduled the appointment with "Laura", who was courteous, to the point, and honest enough to tell me some service I inquired about was not the best financial way to go and suggested something else.
The shop area is clean and decorated with Mazda-friendly banners (aftermarket, etc) so right away I knew my car would be right at home. Within a short time I was told all the issues my car had.
Just days after the appointment I received a hand-written card from Laura and PR Motorsports thanking me for my business and if I needed anything else to just ask.
In brief: honest work at a fair price, and customer service above and beyond. In a recession impacted world of scam artists, thieves, and the like, finally---you can place your trust in a business for quality work. I wish other places could be like PR Motorsports. -

i know that after fifteen years of going here i really shouldn't be surprised when pr motorsports comes through for me in the most awesome ways, but seriously, i can't say enough good things about it. in a momentary lapse of reason, i decided that it couldn't do too much harm to just have my brake pads replaced somewhere local (i live in san francisco; hayward is a bit of a trek on a trafficky friday afternoon). what a mistake! i swear i will never take my little leroy to another shop again! honestly, i feel dirty for even having attempted it. also, even though it has good yelp reviews, the shop i went to definitely tried to scam me.
which is when i called laura in a fit of panic and remorse. she gave me solid advice, and even managed to squeeze me in at the end of a busy day. let me tell you, i don't care how long the drive to hayward is or even how much traffic is stopped on that bridge, it is totally worth it. not only because they saved me over $300, but because they are awesome, and having absolute and utter faith in the people you trust your car to is priceless.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Hayward, CA
My father was visiting from out of town when one of the belts broke in his car (2001 Camry). I found this company on yelp and called to see how much and stuff. Even tho they were SO busy, the woman that answered the phone spoke clearly (not rushed) and, even when it didn't look like they were going to be able to help us today, she took the time to give us some information. Ultimately, she went the extra mile to squeeze us in today and at a 3rd of what Toyota wanted to charge for the same job! (The Toyota guy said "Well, it's not a Toyota part...so I explained to him that a rubber belt is a rubber belt no matter whose name is printed on it.)
Anyway, we've decided to just fix it here but only because my dad's afraid to drive it while it's running on battery only. As far as I can tell, this company's reputation is very well deserved. THANK YOU!!! -

I've had services done at PR Motorsports for many years. I've taken my Mazda RX-7 & Honda Accord there...and my dad took his Toyota there. I believe they specialize in Honda, Acura, and Mazda. The customer service is great and they always get the job done right. I would not hesitate to take any of my cars there again in the future. Right now, I live in SoCal...so I won't be back to PR Motorsports for a couple of years.
Be prepared because there is nothing interesting around the shop (it's in an industrial area). If you want to go anywhere while the car is being worked on, I think you will need to have somebody pick you up. There is the Southland Mall within a 5 minute drive. -

They replaced my brake pads with a minimum of fuss at a low cost and did it quickly. Hector is awesome and above all, honest. Take your Mazda, Toyota, Acura or Lexus to them and they will treat you right. Dealership service love to add on lots of other things, especially with older cars, so I'm happy to have an alternative. They also told me that they can vet used Japanese cars for a reasonable flat fee. I think they said around $80 to spot any major mechanical faults. Recommend.

Outstanding shop, outstanding customer service!
When I first bought my Mazda Miata I took it to the dealer I purchased if from for service. They were adequate. One day I noticed that one of my neighbors had a PR Motorsports plate holder on his Miata so I asked him about them. He was very happy with them and suggested I take my car there. Well, a few months passed and my car was in need of a minor service so I called PR and set up an appointment. Rick Weldon, the owner, explained their services and gave me a brief tour of their clean shop. This was just for what was basically an oil change and inspection. The service was done in a timely fashion. They even left me with an extra quart of oil as a spare (I've never had to use it). Great first impression. I was hooked.
Rick and his team are great folks to work with and a blast to chat with while you wait (when they aren't busy of course). Laura, Hector and Victor take much pride in their work. I've been there a few times since and I have never been disappointed with their service. I was just there this morning for a quick oil change on my way to work. Hector told me that my tires needed a little air which he took care of and everything else was all good. They do performance work if you want to get freaky with your vehicle but they don't push it on you.
Oh, if you're a Miata owner they are involved with BAMA (Bay Area Miata Association) and have put on some nice technical clinics at their shop. I went to one and it was pretty cool!

Albany, CA
I have been taking my Acura to PR Motorsports for 12 years, and also took my husband's old Miata there for several years. I agree with all the things written above about Rick, Laura, Hector and PR in general, but wanted to add that PR is incredibly woman-friendly.
I am a woman who came from a family where I was taught to be suspicious of automotive shops. "Watch out!" they told me. "You can never be sure when they are trying to cheat you." That was especially true of me, considering the depths of my ignorance then and now, about the guts of the car I drive.
So I want to praise PR Motorsports to the heavens for how they have handled me as a female customer. I have consistently experienced being treated as an equal and having things explained to me as much or as little as I wanted. This despite the fact that Rick is a Miata racer and takes his cars very seriously--many another racer might be condescending towards women, but Rick never is. I feel respected and have, over the years, at times called up the shop with small questions about my car or about selling the Miata or purchasing our next car (a Prius). All the folks there have always responded with helpful answers.
I see that at least one other reviewer said they would not buy a car PR won't work on. That's a great policy and I had the same policy until my husband and I decided to buy our Prius. We're very happy with it and fortunately PR has been able to do almost all the maintenance on it so far. And I just found out the other day that Rick is planning on eventually being able to fully service hybrids. Whoopee! I am happy to continue the rest of my life driving 45 mins from Albany to Hayward just to have PR work on my car. -

Between my mom and me, we've taken 3 Miatas to PR in the last 5 years, and we will continue taking them there.
PR Motorsports has brilliant customer service, great pricing and outstanding repair skills. And Saturday appointments! It is absolutely worth it to drive the 30-45 minutes from my house or my mom's, to have the positive experience I always do with PR: from discussing my needs and setting up an appointment with Laura, to getting the details on my options from Rick and seeing Jeremy or Hector working on our cars.
I've gone from a '92 Miata to a 2004, and I've not regretted any of my experiences at PR: rebuilt engine in the '92, sealing various leaks, major service, brake service, minor service... Rick even counseled me on my trade-up to the 2004 when I needed a completely new engine in the '92 and decided it wasn't cost-effective. If I go to PR, I know the car will be taken care of properly, and that Rick will give me the truth about the diagnosis and my options. -

Rick's been working on my 1991 Miata since about 1999. In that time ...
1. He saved me $1600 one time -- I came to him after someone diagnosed the car as needing a new transmission, and I told him if he agreed, it'd be his job to do the work; he diagnosed it as a minor, immediate repair;
2. He spent time talking with my wife (newer than the car) to get her familiar with the car; she LOVES him;
3. His work has always been top-notch and completely reliable;
4. He's friendly, available, and professional;
5. He responded to a post I made to a mailing list by calling me and answering the questions I posted there (wow!);
And the list goes on, and on, and on ... I just can't rave enough about him. -

Why can't more shops be this good?
I've been a happy customer of PR Motorsports for close to 10 years now and have nothing but good things to say. I won't take my cars anywhere else! -

I found out about PR Motorsports from a Miata enthusiast web site (http://Miata.net forums). They all said that PR was the place to take my car in the Bay Area.
I've taken two cars there, and I love the way Rick is always patient and helpful. I had them put a supercharger in my Miata (Whoo!) and Rick spent a huge amount of extra time (for free) to make sure it was done right. He even bundled all the wires and whatnot in a way that the installation instructions didn't call for because he said he wanted it to look clean. He expressed a number of times that if he's going to do a job he's going to do it right. Big points.
I will only take my car to PR Motorsports, and I live up in San Francisco! -

THANK YOU YELP FOR COMING THROUGH ! ! !
I found myself looking to yelp for guidance on finding a new mechanic, and i must say that i found my shop for LIFE ! ! My car had been making this weird rattling noise on the front driver side for the last month.
sidenote: the noise started right after i had my brakes replaced at a different shop.
The noise would come and go and sometimes i wouldnt hear it for days, but this last weekend the noise started back up and progressively started getting worse. Well i knew something was wrong but refused to take it back to the hack shop that i had taken my car to previously. So i turned to yelp. After reading all the great reviews for PR Motorsports i thought i would listen to the yelpers, and let me tell you, they EXCEEDED my expectations. It also helped knowing that this shop specializes in Mazda's, along with Honda, and Toyota... so i had no doubt that my mazda would be in good hands.
Everyone at this shop is friendly and personable. Laura in the front office was very helpful and the best part is i was able to take my car in that same morning. Once i got there Laura asked one of the mechanics, Jeremy, to go with me to listen for this weird noise i was trying to describe. Jeremy was very friendly, and willing to help, even though i know he was probably busy, he still took the time to come on the drive with me to hear my car. In a matter of minutes Jeremy heard the noise, diagnosed the problem, and fixed it. Turns out it was LOOSE LUGNUTS... wth ? ! the entire shop couldnt believe that the previous mechanic left my lugnuts loose enough to make such a loud and crazy rattling noise. Needless to say, everyone at this shop was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, honest, and willing to help. To top it off, they did not charge me for tightening my lugnuts, this only adds to their honesty. I will always bring my car back to PR Motorsports, and i highly recommend this shop ! -

I recently brought an attractively-priced used Miata in for a pre-purchase inspection. Like a previous reviewer, I found PR Motorsports through the http://miata.net forums. It's rare to find agreement on Internet bulletin boards, but everybody seemed to agree: this is *the* place to take a Miata for service.
PR Motorsports was able to tell me exactly why it was attractively priced: the shocks on the right hand side were leaking oil (it's bad when yellow shocks look black!), there was an alignment problem, and the dealer had not changed either the transmission or differential oil before putting it on the lot. The dealer had, however, sprayed the engine with oil to make it shine, which was making the main belt slip. In addition to the report, they also gave me a rough estimate to fix it up: ~$3,000.
The shop is right behind their office, so you can see the work going on. When discussing the inspection results, they were patient when I asked a bunch of questions about their findings.
In the end, I didn't buy the car. The dealer's used car salesman argued with my estimate, staking his "credibility" against that of a mechanic that let me see and discuss what they found. The dealer took less than two minutes to reject my offer, and I walked. PR Motorsports saved me from an $18,000 mistake.
I'll be back. My next attempt at purchasing a used car of a make they service will be here for inspection, too. When I buy one, I'll have it serviced here -- and I live in San Francisco. -

It says Acura but they work on a lot of different make cars, including my super-spiffy craptastic Mazda, with a rotary engine no less. Yeah me. So they've pretty much been the only shop to ever touch my baby in her special places, since I got her all those years back. And until recently I took their services for granted, until visiting another shop behind their back; which only caused me to run straight back to them with no hard feelings on their part, or awkward silences.
They're small, honest, and I think to be a mechanic there you have to have pretty eyes, because the only two guys who have worked on my car have gorgeous blue and green eyes (respectively). But they always take the time to explain all the work to me, and offer cheaper parts, and never try to push unnecessary work on me. -

I recently had my engine die on the freeway. I had seen the good reviews here on Yelp, and decided to have my car towed to PR Motorsports. They ran their diagnostics and delivered the bad news about my engine.
As rough as it is to tell someone their engine has nothing left, the staff at PR Motorsports was friendly and understanding. They offered clear descriptions of what the issues were, and did so in a way that really showed their experience with working on engines. They not only went out of their way to allow me the time needed to take the next steps in finding a new place for my car, they also helped in providing a few solutions to the problem.
I've had so many bad experiences with mechanics over the years, so it's great knowing that there is a place like PR Motorsports that treats their customers like people rather than a tag on a key. -

I took a used car here for a pre-purchase inspection. Their office is clean and comfortable, and the free wifi made the waiting go a lot faster.
Unfortunately, the car was a real lemon. PR Motorsports did a really thorough inspection. When they sat us down to give us the bad news, they told us exactly what all was obviously wrong with it, and the things they suspected were wrong with it (for example, the fluids were all overfilled making them wonder if someone had been trying to cover up a leak somewhere). They even gave us a detailed estimate on how much it would have cost to fix it - ~3500 in repairs, on a car selling for 7k. Um, no.
Anyways, they were super nice and very clearly know what they're doing. We wound up buying a VW instead, but whenever we do wind up with a make these guys service, we'll be thrilled to work with them again. -

PR Motorsports is owned by a Mazda/Miata enthusiast, Rick Weldon, who races these babies in his spare time. He and his team know these cars inside and out and can fix just about anything. It's worth a long drive to take your import to these guys -- they will treat her right.

My Honda Element always felt neglected but P R Motorsports gave her the love and attention that she always deserved. =) They knew exactly what was needed and now my car drives real smoothly now. No more rubbing or vibrating noises during turns and it's much more quite. Unlike the other shops, they don't pressure you to get more stuff done...they just tell you what you will need in the future and how much it will cost. Another place for great service with great people. I really love Yelp for helping me find them.

i needed a new clutch and was recommended to this place by a fellow miata owner.
the people that work at pr motorsports are nice, knowledgeable folks! i spoke/dealt with three different people here, and each one of them was patient and genuinely interested in making sure i had all the information i needed to make a decision.
* if you call them for a quote, they will take the time to understand what you are looking for and happily give you a quote over the phone.
* when you need a major repair, they will check everything they possibly can to make sure you actually need it.
* when you need repairs done, they will explain to you exactly what they are going to do.
in addition, they got my car back to me quicker and charged me several hundred dollars less than the dealer would have.
i hope i don't need more car work done any time soon, but i would come back here again in a heartbeat! -

We've taken our Miata to PR Motorsports ever since we got it in 2004; the previous owner also took it there, which is how we heard about them.
Their customer service is excellent! They take the time to explain things clearly and don't push services on you that you don't need. They tell you frankly which issues are more and less urgent and let you make the decision about what to do. The small size of the shop ensures that you get personalized service, and everyone there is very friendly and helpful, including the mechanics themselves!
I trust their judgment on our car, and my husband, who knows a lot more about the workings of an engine than I do, also trusts their opinions highly.
They are quick about getting things done, and offer rides to and from BART, which is a huge help.
I have no reservations about recommending to PR Motorsports to anyone needing their car serviced! -

I can't say enough about Rick and his crew at PR Motorsports. I've been using Rick since 2000 and he has serviced my 1992 Miata, 1994 Miata, 1994 Spec Miata Race Car, and 1997 Mazda Protege. Rick is honest, reliable, and does great maintenance & repair work at a more than fair price. Rick will tell you exactly what you need and don't need, and I'd wager a bet that most of Rick's customers are long time customers like myself. As long as I can still drive and as long as PR Motorsports is still open, I will always take my car there.
