We tried OD when it opened, and hated it. We went again tonight, to see if this Chiloso spin-off had improved. The service was much better, but the food? Not really.
The food is all generally hot and spicy, as if the only flavor the chef knows is hot peppers. The spicy ranch sauce (that tastes so great with the Chiloso chips) sucks on a salad. My dinner salad was so hot it was inedible. My wife ordered the chicken enchiladas, and the rice and beans were so spicy that they burned her mouth. She couldn't eat them. The chicken-fried steak was OK, and the jalapeno gravy wasn't really too spicy, IF I hadn't had a few bites of the burning-hot salad just moments before. After that fiery salad, even the gravy was too spicy.
The GM said they put jalapenos in everything; even in some of the drinks. I know guys who would enjoy all the hot peppers, but it is not for me. We won't be back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Anna K.Rowlett, TX98614Mar 1, 2015
Heard a lot of buzz about this place, so decided to try it. I just love that Rockwall has such neat restaurants. Had the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer and it was really good. Ordered the chicken sandwich & hubby chose the Papi's burger. The chicken was TO DIE FOR! I have never tasted such smoky tender chicken. It wasn't a hunk of a chicken breast on a bun - it was sliced and seasoned to perfection. Hubby's burger was delicious (I had a bite!), topped with avocado and a fried egg. He said it was the best burger he's ever had. Both came with hand cut fries (similar to Five Guys). I ordered a side of the jalapeno gravy to dip them in. Yum!
You would never know from the outside just how cool the inside is. The atmosphere is modern, decor is classy and upscale, but surprisingly the prices are very reasonable. Also it is much bigger inside than I would have expected. We will be going back!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 28, 2015
Seriously, the best burger I have had in a long time! Since we ate lunch at 3:00, we had the place all to ourselves. Interior design is really neat, with music coming from the bar area. Glenda said the fish tacos were delish. The seasoning of the meat and the melted, slightly fried cheese on my burger gave a flavor you don't want to miss. And the fries were perfect. A solid 5 on the burger! We spoke to the manager and chef for a few minutes, and he said come back and try the CFS with jalapeño gravy. Winner! I'll be there.

Came back for the second time after the wonderful experience we had on our first visit. Wanted to see if they're gonna be bumped up to five stars.
Started with and appetizer of crispy calamari and jalapeno rings served with marinara and bella-blanco sauce for dipping. While just a touch greasy, it was excellent and is reflective of their prowess on fried dishes.
My son had the chicken fried steak and fried okra, which was just as good as I remembered. But wanting to try something different this time, I decided to go for the $13 BBQ Brisket Bacon Cheeseburger. For that amount and based on my first experience, I was a little disappointed. The burger was cooked a little more that I like and it was just not good enough to justify the price tag.
To this point, I probably would have my rating the same as last time (4 stars) based on how great the fried dishes are. But the service on this visit was poor. The main dishes didn't come out for about 30 minutes after our appetizer did and we had to flag the server down to ask her to check after about 20 minutes. Drinks were not refilled without prompting either. In their defense, there was one large party seated around the same time we were, but I think they should be able to accommodate this without as much disruption as we experienced.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Feb 6, 2015Previous reviewWanting to try something new in Rockwall and decided to eat here today as I've been meaning to try it for some time now.
Decor - Sitting in the old Ava's location in downtown Rockwall, the walls are old exposed brick, which are contrasted by modern, wood room dividers in the center. Great atmosphere.
Service - The waitress was attentive, pleasant and helpful with menu offerings and to-go containers.
Food - All of the above is nice, but the real hook here is the food. Large servings of well prepared dishes that are fairly priced. We started with the Tx Trinity, which consists of chips, warm salsa, fresh guacamole and queso - a bargain for $7. There were multiple entree items i wished to try, but settled on the CFS with jalapeno gravy served over a bed of french fries with a side of fried okra. Turns out I didn't really settle as the CFS was outstanding, cripsy crust, tender meat and the gravy had just the right amount of heat. I didn't ask, but I'm pretty sure the fried okra was FRESH (not frozen) and it was out of this world. The only knock was that I would have preferred not to have the fries smothered under the CFS as they got kinda mushy over time.
I went back and forth on rating and decided on 4 stars (instead of 5) since it was my first visit and I need to come back and see if the other items meet the high bar established and that their consistency is good.
I can't wait to go back and try some of the other items on the menu. - Leigh P.Dallas, TX801500135Jun 27, 2016Updated review
I've changed my mind, they've done aggravated me.
We went there for dinner, drug my parents along and everything, and were highly disappointed. If you'd like wine, you'll have to get it by the glass - they don't sell it by the bottle. Whaaa, who does that? If you ask what kind they have, the answer shouldn't be "white or red or pink". There's not an actual wine list or an actual listing of prices. Is this how it really is or is our server this clueless? I would think a restaurant with a full bar and cocktail menu would have a wine list, right??
The men got the chicken fried steak that had been so highly suggested, mom and i had some chicken. My chicken strips (hey I was feeling kid-nostalgic) were a mess, and there was probably 12 on the plate. Why so many? The sides were meh. The server was meh. The bad LED lighting was meh. We sat in a booth but of course it was the last one and everyone else in the line of booths had fucked up the spacing and we were trying to wedge in a 10" space to put our bodies. That didn't work and we had to move to a table. Meh meh meh.
I'll still be found often at Chiloso, and hey, even lunch or brunch here is a'ight. But dinner was a huge disappointment and they are totally missing out on a huge crowd by being so meh at dinner time.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Mar 18, 2016Previous reviewYum!! There were lots of great parts of my lunch and overall sign me up any ol' time for Oscar Delta.
We got there at 11:15 and were the first table there. The waitress was nice enough but no nonsense. My dad is notorious for 1) jumping ahead and ordering in front of all the women like he's the king of Zamunda and 2) talking up the waitress with his "have you eaten here? what do you like?" conversation schtick. Our waitress says no, she's never eaten at Oscar Delta, but she's tried some things. Also that they are the same people as Chiloso.... but not being from Rockwall that didn't mean anything to my dad. She couldn't really say what was good, just what a lot of people tend to order.
My dad ordered three tacos, one burger/chorizo one with a fried egg on top, a crispy shrimp one and a BBQ brisket. I'm not sure if the menu really reflected what came on the tacos- the BBQ Brisket had potato salad on top (yeah yum!) but that was a surprise, as was the fried egg. Can't see the menu online and the ones posted on Yelp aren't helpful either so I can't tell if we all just didn't read well or if it's a fun menu surprise. When I go back, I'll make a point of taking photos of the menu. There were 6-8 tacos to choose from (at $4 each), lots with cool flavor combinations. Menu online only lists a couple of tacos.
I got two tacos, the BBQ brisket and a grilled fish one. The food was served on little square cookie sheets (fun!). All tacos come with chips and salsa. Honestly, the food tasted awesome. The ambiance was fun and nice. My only complaints could be my plastic tea cup was chipped pretty bad (boo), real glasses would have been nicer, and the waitress was pretty ditzy.
I did snag a photo of the drink menu. I'm all about coming back for a cocktail soon. We checked with the waitress about what beer they had on tap, she couldn't really say. She shrugged and said there was "the deep ellum one" which doesn't narrow it down. We'll be back soon and I'll report on the drink sitch! - Christine H.Rockwall, TX1674217Jul 19, 2014First to Review
First, teamwork is front and center here. The GM can be seen greeting guests and helping the bartenders keep up. The smiling bartenders make amazing specialty drinks while making each guest feel special. The place was buzzing and yet seating was efficient and organized. We all loved the food. Big portions, fresh, and unique. It's great to see this gem of a location open again, and by such a deserving new establishment. Welcome to the neighborhood, OD.
Get here.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kyle H.Rockwall, TX231Aug 3, 2016
Let me start by saying we don't come here often.(maybe 4 times in 2 years)
We used to love this place but last Friday night we could tell things have definitely changed. Flies swarming everywhere. Rap music playing? A bar that can't make an old fashioned. Wife and dinner company said wine was bitter tasting.
Food is still tasty but portion size of chicken fried steak is nowhere what it used to be.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Marcie B.Garland, TX15337497Apr 30, 2016
To be honest, I am always a little weary of high star rankings in smaller towns. (Yes, Rockwall is a smaller town, sorry). But we came here just to see if the food matched the reviews.
I ordered the chicken fried steak and it was GREAT. They used a jalapeño gravy that had just enough kick but was not too spicy. The portion was huge. One of those items that comes out and you immediately regret not sharing it with someone. The price was great ($12) and the service was good. We will definitely be back and sharing the CFS next time.
Only recommendation I could make would be that they need mashed potatoes. You just can't have chicken fried steak without them.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tracey H.Rowlett, TX112368Aug 3, 2014
What a fabulous place! From food to atmosphere to wait staff everything was fantastic! We had a family dinner here with 5 adults with all different likes and dislikes and not one bad remark the whole evening.
We started out with drinks at the bar while we waited for our table. I have to say the drinks are very pricey (4 cocktails were $41) but my $11 dollar habanero raspberry margarita was well worth it.
Let's get started with appetizers.
One person made the statement that the brisket cheese fries were the best they had ever had in their life and the rest of us chimed in with the same. We also had the chips with three dips. It is salsa, queso, and guacamole. They were all three great.
On to dinner. Chicken fried steak with okra and broccoli cheese casserole was EXCELLENT! We also had the buttermilk chicken fingers with fried potatoes and dirty rice and it was all EXCELLENT as well. I hade the house Cobb salad with grilled steak. It was great too, but be aware that the ranch is jalapeño ranch and it is called blanco sauce.
Don't wait!! You. Must. Go.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jessica H.Lewisville, TX14Mar 20, 2016Updated review
In a follow up to my prior post....this restaurant still had some of my favorite food....when they can get the order right or to you in a timely manner.
You can't go wrong with anything that has their smoked meats....especially the brisket and chicken which is why I have loved this place since it opened for lunch and dinner.
Brunch on the other hand is a very different experience. The owners and management staff have obviously not committed themselves to this venture. We have now been here three times for brunch and had horrible experiences every time. Most of the issues derive from the fact they are always understaffed for brunch even though the place is usually only half full. We always get horrible service and the wait staff seem stretched thin to the point they have attitude with the customers when you need something and only refilled drinks once. The kitchen seems to be a separate issue. Both ourselves and the table next to us both received incorrect orders and had to send back.
Lastly, I have been waiting for my check the entire time I have been writing this review and am still waiting. And my waitress is currently cleaning the table next to us while we still wait.
Makes me sad...this restaurant has such potential with the great favors in their food but if they don't address staff issues in both the front of the house and back they won't be successful.
The two stars are to give credit to their food....but the service has gotten so awful it diminishes the experience greatly.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Apr 16, 2015Previous reviewMy favorite restaurant in the Rowlett/Rockwall area.
Brisket fries are amazing, great burgers and chicken fried steak. Can't go wrong with any dish that has their queso. Oh and the brownie dessert rocks!!!!
