Hats off to OCT . . . The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas . . . more than two hours of singing, dancing, laughing and naughty girls. Great sets and wonderful choreography (thank you SuSu Sparkman - nice job). Obviously an adult theme - but a wonderful event for the whole family. A large cast - too many to name individually - howevery kudos to Melody Murphy (Miss Mona Strangley) and Jeff Cole (Governor & C.J Scruggs) - great voices, stage presence and abilities! Performances through September 30th.

As a season ticket holder for the past 10 years - I've seen (and heard) great, good and not-quite-so-good performances. There is still time - you really need to see LEADING LADIES (runs through April 11th). Here is a quick synopsis: The play is set in the early 1950's opening with two second-rate English actors presenting a program of Shakespearean excerpts on the Moose Lodge circuit in rural Pennsylvania. Leo (Chip Morris) learns that a wealthy women in York, PA has passed leaving $3 million to her heirs and talks his partner Jack (Diego Fuentes) into posing. One they arrive at the Mansion the fun continues from scene to scene. The heirs are actually nieces - so Leo & Jack dive into their costume trunk and pass themselves off as Maxine & Stephanie. Oh - did I mention the "old lady" really did not die. The plot thickens even further when Leo falls in love with the real niece, Meg played by Laura Bradford. You also need to see Doc (played by Jeff Cole) - who brings life, laughter and "spunk" to this play. This is a MUST SEE.
Sep 29, 2008Previous reviewDid you ever read the paper on Monday morning and see an article about an event and said, "If I had only known about that - I would have gone!" I moved to Ocala eight years ago and have had season tickets at the Ocala Civic Theater every year. Probably the best investment I've made while living here. Sure I've seen a couple of plays that were - just, so - so; but overall - the facility, the actors, the orchestra, the scenery - are OUTSTANDING. I can't tell you how many great plays I've seen. Just recently, I attended HELLO DOLLY! I left there asking, "is it really over?" What a fabulous couple of hours on a Saturday night.
Still to come this season is a great Agatha Christie, The Unexpected Guest along with The Baker's Wife (in February '09) and No Sex, Wer're British (March '09). They will be ending the 2008/2009 season with The Wizard of Oz. (May 2009).
Each play has several weeks of performances - with at least one matinee per week. If you want to add some culture, some excitement, some adventure or maybe reminisce about the past - even if it's just for a couple of hours - I highly recommend purchasing a couple of tickets for any of the upcoming plays at OCT.
When is the last time you experienced "live" actors - who give their all to every performance?
I hope you enjoy yourself as much as I have (and plan to continue doing). By the way, thanks Carol! - Joyce G.Ocala, FL2171Feb 4, 2017
Total waste of Money and our evening. We saw "The Fantasticks" and it was just awful. The Lead Male Singer was so out of Tune it made us cringe. The other Singers were also difficult to listen to. The only Singers passable were the Men that played the Fathers. So disappointed,we thought we found a nice place to go to see at least decent Plays but after this experience we will never go back. For that entertainment it should be free or max. $5.00 we wasted $50.00 and had to suffer through it.

I love local talent. "Always, Patsy Cline" was a sweet show. They gave it their all. Nice building. Great evening out for a "first date". Good support of performing artists, Jay. Did we win the raffel?

The Ocala Civic theater attracts the top talent from the surrounding counties, matches it with outstanding directors brought in from around the country and displays it on sets worthy of the best theaters in the US. A main stage "season" will usually include 3 musicals as well as 2 comedies/dramas. Music is LIVE, not taped. The theater seats about 400, making it an intimate experience. We enjoy theater and have seen dozens of shows in NY, as well as travelling shows in great theaters in many cities including Tampa, Orlando, Atlanta, Chicago and Boston. We have been attending performances here for more than 20 years and about 99.5% of the time we come out absolutely amazed that these are local people putting on these kinds of performances. Do yourself a favor...go see a show. The performance is great, the price is right (I think $25-28/show with discounts for the season) and the experience is first class.
