About the Business
Established in 1960. Ah, what an intriguing blend that would be! Imagine stepping into this covered patio where the delightful essence of an Authentic French Normandie Country Bakery intertwines with Italian charm owned by Chef Josette. The air carries the fragrant symphony of freshly baked famous Chef Josette baguettes and croissants mingling harmoniously with the aroma of rich Italian espressos and sweet tiramisu. As you enter, the ambiance is a fusion of rustic French countryside and the warm, inviting spirit of an Italian trattoria. The patio, adorned with cozy, weathered wooden tables and chairs reminiscent of a French Cafe boulangerie, is now complemented by vibrant Italian ceramics and perhaps a touch of Mediterranean greenery. The walls might boast both French pastoral scenes and Italian landscapes, celebrating the beauty of both cultures. As you settle in, you'll be greeted by a server who effortlessly switches between French and Italian, embodying the seamless blend of these culinary worlds.

I used to visit this location a lot as a kid since I lived around the block and I remember their pastries being delicious! However, I was around the area and decided to stop by and grab some of my favorite treats.
To my surprise, nothing tasted like it used to. The cookies tasted stale and the cakes were overly sweet.
Also, the employees seemed miserable, I felt like I bothered them with my presence. After not being there for so many years that's something you don't expect.
I wouldn't come back, it's sad to see that this place went downhill! Also, the prices are ridiculously high for the quality!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kaylan M.SoMa, San Francisco, CA051Feb 18, 2024
Disappointing Experience at Chef Josette's Restaurant:
I recently dined at Chef Josette's restaurant and unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. From the moment I entered, I was met with unwelcoming behavior and an overall lack of hospitality.
Chef Josette herself came across as quite mean and dismissive. When I asked questions about the food, she seemed secretive and unwilling to provide any information about the dishes. This lack of transparency left me feeling frustrated and uninformed about what I was ordering.
Chef Josette's treatment of her staff is abhorrent; she belittles and demeans them, treating them as though they are incompetent and unintelligent. She constantly criticizes their work in front of others, never offering constructive feedback, and berates them in French for even the smallest mistakes. Josette's management style fosters a toxic work environment, where morale is low, and turnover is high. Her behavior not only damages the self-esteem of her staff but also undermines their ability to perform their jobs effectively.
Furthermore, I was disappointed to see that the sidewalk outside the restaurant was not ADA compliant, making it difficult for individuals with disabilities to access the establishment. This lack of accessibility is unacceptable and reflects poorly on the restaurant's commitment to inclusivity.
Overall, Chef Josette's attempts to play off her rudeness with humor fell flat. Her demeanor was as distempered as the food she served. I would not recommend dining at this establishment, as the negative experience and ambiance overshadowed any potential culinary delights.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Feb 18, 2024
This place saved my daughters 17th birthday! I was down to the last couple days and didn't know where to celebrate my daughters 17th. I drove by and saw a sign that said have your next party with us, so I popped in! I spoke with the owner-a French chef named Josette, who was so good to me! She helped me plan a brunch for 20 guest and made my daughters request of a strawberries & cream cake! Side note: The ham & cheese quiche was DIVINE!! Thank you Chef Josette for making our celebration so special and all for a much more reasonable price! Xoxo

LOVE this place! And I love Josette, who never ages. Such a spunky, bouncy person. The BEST croissants and baguettes this side of Paris. Josette old me that she sells up to (more than??) 2,000 baguettes a day, because she furnishes so many restaurants. I noticed the neighbors also drop by for bread or pastry. Hot coffee in the morning on the front counter.
Josette bought this place in 1989 and the bakery/restaurant has been bustling ever since, keeping Angelenos on the westside full of delectible French goodies. This year, she is catering one of the Oscar parties in Hollywood. She has been awarded for excellent business practices by the French Consul General of Los Angeles at a banquet held in her honor.
Go for a casual breakfast. Most (all?) of the tables are outside, along a covered front patio. HAVE A CROISSANT. Did I mention that? That they are the BEST CROISSANTS THIS SIDE OF PARIS?? Ok, then... The omelets are also superb.
Or go for lunch. Delicious specials that change daily. And have a croissant...
Almost forgot to mention the delectible pastries, which are displayed in a case in the small front space. (Behind is a humongous kitchen where the magic happens.) I bought some pear tarts for my Swiss neighbor, and she said they tasted just like her mother used to make. Sometimes you get lucky and get there just when the croissants are coming out of the oven. Incomparable.
Ham and cheese croissants, chocolate croissants, cakes, pies, and gourmet French cheeses. You just gotta get here.
Parking sucks but you can figure it out. If it's a slow day (rare) you can park right in front.
Josette, I love you!!! xox Stay who you are and continue to delight us with your treats for years to come!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Courtney C.Los Angeles, CA45035Feb 3, 2024
I called to ask questions about their pastries today and the employees seemed very impatient and annoyed. I was cut off multiple times with the response that they couldn't answer my questions bc the owner was out of the country. I love this bakery but not enough to be talked to like that. It's not what you say, it's how you say it.

LAST AND FINAL TIME SUPPORTING THIS BUSINESS. You can only get so many chances and still disappoint. This last visit my sister and I stopped by to pick up some pastries. Chef Suzette's partner the blonde heavy set one is soooooo miserable and rude.
We walked in and patiently waited as one of the kitchen staff went to get her as no one was there to greet or assist customers entering. As she walked up we pleasantly said hello and told her that we were interested in getting some pastries.
As we told her the first item we wanted she immediately began packaging. Didn't even give us a chance to finish placing our order. Never asked if we were done. We proceeded to tell her the next items we want. She did it again. We told her that we're not done ordering from the display and that there were a few more items we'd like to get.
She abruptly fired off with an attitude, "IF YOU DON'T MIND GIVING ME YOUR ORDER ALL AT ONCE!!!" My sister and I looked at each and decided that were done. We turned around and walked out empty handed.
We were not going to to be disrespected and still patronize this business. Since that incident we've been going up the street to the new Whole Foods Market on La Cienega Boulevard which is literally only a 2 minute drive away.
They have daily fresh baked breads, cakes and pastries. A bar with plenty of dining space, a buffet full of healthy lunch options, including a deli, pizza and Mexican food section. The entire store is full of pleasant and helpful staff, and parking is abundant.
As good as Normandies pastries are there customer service has got do a whole lot better.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1Oct 6, 2021Previous reviewThe pastries here are delicious, but I've had a few unpleasant experiences lately. On one visit the owner sold me a batch of pastries. As she was packing them away she went on and on about how fresh they were. When I got home nearly all of them were dry and stale.
The other experience I order a 6" coconut cake which cost ~ $25+ tax. Inside was two extremely thin layers of cake and a thick layer of frosting on top. I felt cheated. If you're going to charge your customers a surplus, then take care of them by treating them fairly. They also charged for credit card payment. I've never had to pay that before, it wasn't posted, and wasn't told to me before hand.
Can't say I appreciate the service I've received these past few times. - Apr 30, 2022
A friend recommended this place to get a good pastry. Otherwise, I would have never found it. It's not in a very conspicuous place.
I ordered a French onion soup and bread pudding. I ate the bread pudding in my car. I only meant to take a quick bite but I couldn't stop myself.
The French onion soup was just luscious. One of the best!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Anush O.Los Angeles, CA04751Jan 1, 2023

I first met the owner and chef, Josette, in Las Vegas over 15 years ago when she had a restaurant and bakery called Normandie there. We were regulars, and hosted colleagues and friends there when they'd come to Las Vegas for business or pleasure. The food was always very good, the pastries excellent, and the conversations with Josette lively.
We first tried her Los Angeles Normandie about a decade ago. It's in an industrial area across the street from the Expo line tracks. The baked goods are excellent, as I remember them. Food items we've tried have been very good as well -- authentic French.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
