This ON-the-beaten-path place is still basically off the beaten path, as it is a nondescript hidden gem tucked away inside a wine, beer, and cheese store right on 9th Avenue in NYC! And, not many people know about it, so you can usually get a seat immediately. In fact, I hesitate writing this review because I'm reluctant to alert the masses about Vintners, but, alas, I'm letting the cat out of the bag!
So what is the deal with this place? What exactly makes it special? Everything, really! From the service to the food to the drinks to the daily specials! It's all good. Here are a few highlights:
- Drinks and drink specials - Vintners is wine and beer only but they carry an array of unique beers and wines. Plus, they have specials every night on both wine, bubbly, and beer. And, you can't beat the prices--like $5 each for the specials!
- Appetizers - I recommend the cheese fondu, any of their dips, and the chorizo salad. All of these are shareable portions, by the way... and all tasty!
- Sandwiches - Best grilled cheese you will ever have. Also try their gravy with any of the meat sandwiches (just ask) and dip those sandwich until your heart is content! Yum. I recommend getting 2 to 3 sammys, cutting them into pieces, and sharing!
- Service - Hector is the real deal!
- Atmosphere - Vintner's is a beer, wine, and cheese store with about 15 tables, so it is a no nonsense type of place; nothing fancy, but it gets the job done!Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - 1825333690Oct 13, 2020
One of the most coziest liquor stores that I have been to. They have a wide selection, including "can" rosé. Remember to bring your ID. The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly.

I've gone back to Vintner's tons since my original review, and at this point I have to bump my stars up. This place is spectacular. Service is ultra friendly and they've since improved the seating area by taking out the bar that lined the wall and adding several tables instead. It looks much more elegant now.
My current love there (which won't surprise any of my regular readers) is the brioche salad that includes mixed greens, endive, beets, candied pecans and a generous helping of bread slices. This salad is ginormous, but somehow I manage to demolish it every time. Absolutely awesome.
I've also had a couple sandwiches as well. There is a roast beef sandwich with a spiced mayo that is absolutely delicious. Their turkey sandwich is also quite tasty and I'm happy to say their turkey is nice and moist.
I'm a regular customer and will continue to be for quite some time!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0May 14, 2009Previous reviewI have not yet visited the wine store, but their beer/cheese shop next store is the draw I have not been able to resist! At first I only purchased cheeses there, all of which were delicious and so much better than anything I've found at a supermarket or local deli. Their cheeses range from creamy and mild to sharp and strong. Their variety of cheese AND beer is amazing!
A couple weeks back I finally sat down there for dinner, and it was a fantastic experience. Their cheese plate allows you to select 3 or 6 samples of cheese. You get bread cut into medallion sizes and between the fruit, fig spread, honey and cheese I was in heaven. The dutch yellow cheese rocked my socks! I had their beet and goat cheese salad, which was nicely done (though I prefer Schnipper's).
The only slight criticism I have is that the olives were WAY too salty, and not sweet like I prefer them. But that's a very minor nitpick.
The space is tiny, but it has a certain NYC type of intimacy that I appreciated. The service is excellent and the facilities are clean. I enjoyed myself and look forward to trying some of their other dishes. - Vinay R.New York, NY15293Oct 5, 2020
Great selection and helpful staff. Just stopped by to pick up a few bottles and walked away impressed. Although I didn't get their names, two gentlemen really went out of their way to help me find the right selection. For the roses, they asked if I wanted the chilled version, and then picked them out from the fridge in the back room... Prices were competitive and the selection/layout was excellent as well. Also enjoyed a quick chat with Billy (cashier) on the way out. I'll be back!

Honestly, I was surprised that I found this place had pretty good selections and types of wine with such a cozy space. Left side was all about red wines - I could even find my favorite Australian Syrah which I couldn't find in this vicinity. Right side is white wines globally as well.

Great wide selections. Staffs were knowledgeable and helped picking out good wines without being pushy. Will come back for sure.

I had started making this store my go-to wine shop in the neighborhood. They offer 15% discount on 12 bottles if you pay cash. I have been taking advantage of this offer. The last time I went there I picked bottles that would average to 40$ a bottle as well as two bottles of veuve champagne. To my surprise and despite the past discounts the guy at the cashier refused to honor the discount for those two bottles of veuve. He wanted to convince me buy Moet instead! So I walked out. I went to Cellar 53 on 10th Ave and 53rd. The same price veuve champagne which I bought a case were sold to me with 20% discount. How stupid Vinter wine store could be to upset a neighborhood customer for a discount of 20$ on 500$ worth of purchase. But thanks to their bad behavior I found a better wine store with higher discount on all bottles. Also Cellar 53 honors the discount even when you pay with credit card.

The worst liquor store in Manhattan!!! they hung-up on the phone, they charge you more than on their website, and after when you pay, they say oh we don't have all the bottle your order!!!
THE WORST!!! YOU CAN'T TRUST THEMHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Garrett B.New York, NY1989Sep 22, 2019Updated review
1. Plus: they are open till midnight Thursday/Friday/Saturday. Minus: they do not honor the store hours that are posted. They close the grate 15 minutes before closing hours and are gone 10 minutes before the store is supposed to be closed.
2. Their wines are priced higher than local competitors like Grace on 10th Avenue by $2 to $3 dollars a bottle.
3. Most of their wines are $18 and up. It is very difficult to find a middle of the week $12 bottle to have with dinner.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Mar 5, 2010Previous reviewIf you are Yelping about the food/deli/wine bar with a similar name you should review at VINTNER WINE MARKET. NINTH AVENUE VINTNER is just a wine store.
The thing that gets me about this place is the passive/aggressive sales staff/owners. They are not exactly snotty, but they make snide comments towards their customers that are supposed to be "funny" while highlighting how highbrow while lowbrow dressed they are. In their mind they are God's Gift to the Wine World of Ninth Avenue. Stick around and eavesdrop long enough and you'll see what I mean: pick any bottle off the shelf and look at the label for a moment. The staff will chime in, "if you like that sort of wine there is a better bottle on the shelf above" the shelf above being $6 more a bottle. Or if you ask for a recommendation they will immediately point you to the highest priced bottle. If you pick up a moderate priced bottle, like in the $15 range, and ask "how it is?" they will gaze into the middle space and moan "well, if THAT's your price point, you can get buy, but there are much better [[Sancerre's] [Gamays] whatever is in your hand] if you want to go for it." They are "always closing" to quote David Mamet in Glengarry Glen Ross. And frankly that takes the joy out of rummaging for wine so I don't come here very often any more.
There are very limited wines in the $12 and under range. There are excellent selections in the $25 and over range. This is not your every day of the week wine shop. It might be a nice spot to go if you need a housewarming gift for someone you are visiting in the neighborhood and want to impress with an expensive bottle of wine.
On the plus side they have a very nice selection of rose's in the summer, and despite the limited shelf space they manage to cram in a range of wines from each major region of production worldwide. If you are a tourist in a hotel, they also sell glassware, corkscrews etc so you can put together an in room picnic for the hotel. They are big on New York State wines also, but alas, the reason for that, the owner once told me was "because we can make a bigger profit margin on them." I wasn't surprised to hear him say that.
