Been here a bunch and let's just say that your odds are non existent. Have fun kissing all your money goodbye. Gambling is only fun when the establishment gives you a CHANCE.

Weird. Weird. Weird.
Those are the three words that best describe this casino.
I've been meaning to visit for a while and I finally got the chance to do so recently. However, I must admit, my experience was very surreal in nature.
First off, the exterior of the building has a really odd architectural style to it. Especially for a casino. If I didn't know any better, my guess would be that it was built by Mormons to be a very large temple for the LDS. That pretty much is what it resembles.
Inside, the interior has a large central room filled with numerous slot machines and the surrounding perimeter contains a couple restaurants. When I visited, the place was very empty. Very very empty. That was on a Saturday night. From the lack of patrons on a Saturday night I cannot understand how this casino stays in business. Oh, sure, there were a few people sitting at the slots, some hanging out at the bar watching the NBA playoffs, and a few people grabbing something to eat at the food stand. But that was it. Both side restaurants were closed.
Speaking of people, where were all the young sharp-dressed good-looking people in those promotional photos, smiling, and having a good time? I didn't see them. Instead, everyone was over 60 years old and everyone was not very "dressed to impress."
I expected my pizza slice from the food stand to be bad (aw heck I was starving), but I never expected it to be THAT bad. The pizza was worse than frozen Ellio's pizza and that is saying a lot.
In a way I'm glad I visited. Yes my experience was weird, but to be honest, I like weird. I felt like I was part of some bazaar dream movie where the ending would all make sense and all the pieces would come together. Unfortunately that ending never occurred. I've got to imagine this casino says something about America or Americana, but whatever it says, I still haven't figured it out. And I've been thinking about it for a good 3 full days now.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0 - Melissa M.Pawtucket, RI58417194Apr 22, 2018
I didn't want to believe it but the previous yelps are accurate this casino really has gone down the drain.
The building itself is still in great shape and well kept, they cut the gaming spaces completely in half and the games are all identical now so they have 0 variety/choice.
I wish new visitors could see what the casino looked like back in the 90s and 00s. once upon time it was filled the brim with games, restaurants, and questionable casino people.
I hope if they do end up selling the property they bring it back to what it once was.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Kevin D.Cambridge, MA04Nov 9, 2016
Ive been to Newport Grand several times when i lived in the New Bedford area. It was fairly close.
Closer than Foxwoods my preferred Casino.
Unlike some people, I always enjoyed my time there. It was never crowded, in daytime. You can always play the slot you wanted. I never hit a jackpot there, but had done pretty good and had a goodtime to boot. Leaving with money is fun.
I usually have a few beers, decent prices, and spent an hour or two there.
I like the fact that it is different from Foxwoods. It is a small and basic slot parlor. I enjoy Foxwoods, but its nice to come to Newport Grand on occasion.
The local area is also really developed with a lot of nice restaurants. It was another reason to come by.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 5, 2017
I like that there is a non smoking section. That is where it ends. Not flashy. No sound of winners. They offer a players card but the promotions desk staff does not know what you can get with your points. No complimentary beverage service. Not impressed.

Eh, id recommend going to another casino. There are no table games here with dealers, except for an electronic blackjack game that seems to always screw you when it randomly decides to just throw a random 21 because F#@k you give me money.
Theres also slot machines galore here. They probably have like every slot machine type here. You can think of. However I cant say the odds of you winning any money are good. I must of burned through $30 in minutes.
There Is a bar here but I was soo angry at the electric blackjack machine I didn't bother trying it out.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Big D.Fall River, MA31311Jul 25, 2015
Omg. Didn't last 10 minutes in this place. Spent $20 in 45 seconds and only hit $0.20 cents.
I think some of the people were on their death beds...
Avoid at all costs!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - John C.Scituate, MA0239Mar 11, 2018
Well this place is exactly what you think it is, a slot parlor. Nothing fancy, no waitresses and no free drinks. Just slots and a electronic roulette table and a 2 black jack tables. Drinks are priced on the high end given it's a casino and the give anything for free. Fountain sodas are even over $2. But besides all that it's still a good place to visit which we have many times. Not sure that even when this place was new it could have gotten 5 stars. It's just not that kind of place. It is a great version of what it is suppose to be, a casino. Atmosphere is nice and seemingly clean. Not much of a rewards/comp system. We will continue to visit whenever we are in Newport

The Ugly: One trip here (for about a half hour) and you will be broke, die of second hand smoke, view real-life walking zombies, have the pleasure of taking in the aromas of expired depends, Ben Gay, Aqua net hairspray, boiled Chicken and talcum powder. Good thing is that it totally took the itch to gamble right out of my system - Losing $100 didn't sit well! The machines used to be a lot more generous.
The Pretty: The mainstay hotel next door is inexpensive and has a shuttle to downtown Newport where you can go and have a real good time. Tons of shopping, restaurants and people who are actually alive!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - 132314361Feb 16, 2009First to Review
Beware of this place. It is an older casino/Jai Lai (they did away with the Jai Lai) establishment that sits on the outskirts of beautiful Newport in a tough area outside the Naval Base. The place is a monstrosity sitting on a hill and fills up with really scary locals coming out of the woodwork hoping to cash in here. What it amounts to inside is a nasty place that smells like old smoke and looks like it is out of the 1970's. It has all digital casino slots (1 cent and 5 cent and 50 cent) and a lounge with really scary acts playing and just an all around mess. It touts itself as a professional casino but since the Jai Lai is gone, it leaves a bunch of slot machines in a badly decorated split rooms. The staff is half asleep and they could care less what goes on here. This place looks like it is on its last legs and should really think about closing. Not sure what is keeping it open!
