Established in 1902. Mountain View was incorporated on November 7, 1902. One of the first acts of the new city council was to elect a marshal, R.C. Waits. Waits' duties were mostly administrative, and another officer was hired in 1909 to assist with the enforcement of laws. In addition to the marshal, the Santa Clara County Sheriff and Fremont Township Constable also had offices in town. In 1916, the city appointed a traffic officer to address the problem of speeding vehicles on Castro Street. Officers were expected to provide their own vehicles, which may explain why the city had to recruit candidates from as far away as San Jose to fill the position. The Mountain View Police Department of today is a vastly different organization from the one-man Marshal's office of R.C. Waits. 100 sworn officers and a dedicated support staff deliver police services effectively and efficiently to a population of 75,000 people.

We recently purchased a house in Mountain View and had to call their non-emergency hotline. We were pleased that the officers responded quickly. We called multiple times due to certain issues in our neighborhood and they always respond. We had an opportunity to talk to the responding officer and they appear knowledgeable, professional, and understandable.
I support our MVPD. It's nice to know that they are well funded.
Thank you MVPD for all the things you do and for keeping our community safe!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 26, 2022
I was assaulted by a car near in n out but your cops are rude and refused to take their information .
Luckily there was a witness nearby and if you're working in a highly Asian populated city pls respect other races. . 2nd worst encounter with your lack of police services .Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - X. Y.Campbell, CA101239540Aug 21, 2023Updated review
I was washing laundry at The Wash Stop. It was 9:22PM. An SUV approached the Calderón/Church intersection from the south. There is a 4-way stop there. The SUV was from MVPD. It did not bother to stop and continued through the intersection in the northbound direction. The vehicle was not pursuing anybody and no sirens were on. The officer driving the SUV did not make a stop as it should have. I do all the time because I respect the rules and it's common sense as well. I do not see why any police office shouldn't, especially if it's not going after somebody breaking the law. It was unacceptable so here's a 1-star for the behavior. Officers should be the first to show the good example. There are plenty of idiots around the streets and they should be a frame of reference for kids and adults.

Mountain View was a nice, quiet and safe city. Since about 2019 I have seen an increase in car burglaries and a bunch of other crimes or, at least, I have seen plenty of reports on a regular basis on Nextdoor. The fact the city passed rent control measures only attracted idiots who think crime pays which in turn lowered the standards of civilization in the city. It's never been like that before. People on Nextdoor complained more and more about crimes but I saw MVPD was successful in many cases. MVPD works relentlessly. A few years ago I met a few officers in person, exchanged a few words with them and expressed my gratitude for the dangerous work they do to ensure the safety of our community, especially in these times when so many are against police because they are under the impression police is bad and criminals should not be out in the streets. People are so ignorant to believe that police should be de-funded so I did my part by founding MVPD by calling it regularly to fine people who park their cars in front of red curbs and fire hydrants. It teaches people rules must be obeyed and puts money in the MVPD piggy bank. Out of a sample of 12 calls I was only able to confirm they slapped a fine 6 times. That makes is a 50% hit ratio but that was only between Monday and Friday very early in the morning (after midnight). I was never able to get a car fined on a weekend (I assume MVPD is unusually busy on weekends).
One thing I do not understand about MVPD is the way abandoned cars are handled. I called the phone line when I noticed 2 cars were parked in the same spot on the street for over 3 weeks. I filed cases through the city's website but the cases were never opened. I called and I was never able to connect with anybody. It was a dead end.
One thing I did not like about MVPD is that I once complained about an almost certain fatal collision when a pick-up driver passed in front of me driving through red lights. I was lucky I have unusual driving abilities which helped me survive the situation. MVPD did not bother to check cameras and go after the person on the pick-up that was driving recklessly who will likely cause an accident somewhere in the future.
Kudos to MVPD for keeping MV safe despite a bunch of idiots out there, especially during the pandemic. Still, there is room for improvement. Nobody is perfect. - Eduardo S.East Palo Alto, CA0112Aug 1, 2023
Officer Gonzales was nothing but a man egotistic officer. I got a bike thrown at my car and also rocks. Called MVPD and they sent an officer. I let him know what happen and he told me there isn't much he can do. Then he tells me is just sounds like my feeling are hurt. Like how am I suppose to feel after someone threw their bike and rocks at my car. I told him how am I suppose to feel safe and better if nothing being done. He then told me if I wanted he can give me a card that said he talked to me if that will make me feel better. Like really you're here to serve and protect. Not sure if he was just homophonic cause he pretty much dismissed me and my partner. This is unacceptable. He could just lied and said we'll look into it and follow up if anything. But he chooses to act like I'm a kid complaining of being bullied. Do better and protect your citizen. Shout out to the dispatcher who helped me more then the actual officer.

The worst - a lazy pack of 'police officers' who cannot solve crimes but are excellent at harassment and laziness.
One of them had my car ILLEGALLY TOWED from in front of my apartment for no reason, at 3am- a Mercedes I paid 30k for - gave me the wrong information on how to retrieve it and the questionable police chief REFUSED to discuss it. I had a disabled sign on the car and it was ignored. NO ONE could help me. I have driven all my life, am an excellent driver and now reduced to walking the streets or taking public transportation...thanks to a thieving pack of cops! They have the reputation of not being able to solve a single rape case but are excellent at sitting in their cars playing video games- just out of sight of the dangerous intersections they should be watching.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 25, 2019Previous reviewThe Mountain View Police Department is the worst I have ever encountered. They came to the apartment because my daughter and I were arguing loudly. One officer told me I was suicidal, put handcuffs on so tightly because he said it was his first time and he wasn't familiar with it. So two of Mountain View's Finest drove me to San Jose's Mental Facility and I had to stay THREE DAYS for no reason. Oh yes, first cop told me the "reason"... I said I was going to "slit my throat"... apparently, another cop ploy .. What woman actually says that she is going to grab a knife, saber, or possibly a convenient Samurai sword, and really wants to add more wrinkles to her throat, then worry about the blood stains on her carpet??
My poor cat was at least two of those days without food...and I had sore bruised wrists to accompany my already painful arthritis... guess I posted a threat at 79 and 110 pounds to the four or five officers who had nothing better to do. Read recently in the newspaper that MVPD just cannot solve murders, rapes, and an assortment of other crimes.
Oh, but aside from practicing their fighting skills on seniors, they are tops in their field at arresting young women for drinking in public.. usually takes four or even five if it happens at a dangerous site, such as Whole Foods.
Keep up the great work, guys, maybe you will be real men someday!
Btw...the MVPD has awesome policewomen...a credit to their profession - Jason S.Mountain View, CA311Jun 13, 2021
I've lived in Mountain View for 15 years and have interacted with MVPD 5 times regarding incidents (and a few more times at community events when they talk to kids, give out stickers, etc.).
Each time has been pleasant: They respond quickly even to non-emergencies, take concerns seriously, are compassionate and respectful, and are professional yet personable.
I feel very lucky to have these fine officers and staff keeping us safe and looking out for our community.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Summer S.Mountain View, CA125Mar 27, 2019
Officer Roberto (?) was very nice and helpful.
I went to Santa Clare traffic court to set up a court date and there were a lot of people, so I didn't ask a couple questions I wanted to.
I bought the paperwork/questions to Mountain View police department. Officer Roberto patiently explained to me what I needed to do. He also told me how to do the registration sticker on my car correctly to prevent it from being stolen.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - John H.Marina, CA6215846Jan 27, 2019
Having lived and owned homes all around the Bay Area I have to say the MVPD is one of the best PDs we've seen. They take a high-touch approach to the community, responding to a lot of things that would never get response to in SF, for example.
My incredibly tall next door neighbor had his bicycle stolen out of his garage; MVPD quickly recovered it by cruising the neighborhood - he spotted the 5'6" thief carrying the bike on his shoulder because he was too short to ride it! While not every bike stolen in MV gets recovered, this one did because the officer took the time to look for it. This would not happen in San Francisco - ever.
As a resident and a homeowner, I have a lot of confidence in our "5-0"!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alejandro Z.San Jose, CA65426Feb 14, 2016
MVPD is doing a great job keeping us safe late at night...
I live near whisman station... I get home from a long day, get ready for bed and get a text from a neighbor that there is a police officer cruising the street slowly issuing parking tickets and fix it tickets. I'm sure his training was used to the fullest extent to issue me a parking violation for a missing front license plate. He issued at least 3 tickets on whisman ave and who knows how many others here. Anything to reach their quota, waits for the late night when people go in for the night to do this. I'm sure that they are not doing this on the other side of the tracks. I support police department, but if this is how they fill their time it's embarrassing. They sure are doing a great job keeping us safe...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Roman D.Los Altos, CA255Dec 5, 2019
I have lived in the Mountain View/Sunnyvale/Los Altos area for 30 years and I never had any encounter with the MV PD until early this September morning. I made a late run to Walgreens on El Camino at approx 2am. After I made my purchase and drove out of the parking lot onto El Camino towards 85, I saw a car heading towards me and through my rear view mirror, it appeared to change directions to follow me onto 85. I watched in my rear view mirror and this vehicle appeared to be honed in on me, matching my speed, which hadn't gotten to 60 MPH yet. With all the crap going on around this country, I thought some dude was following me. It didn't seem like an unreasonable suspicion. I was getting off at the Fremont exit, so I quickly ramped my Lexus up to 100 MPH in a dumb, uncharacteristic effort to leave this car behind. He stayed with me for about 10 seconds, then to my surprise, his lights flashed on to let me know that it was a squad car. "F- me", I thought. I immediately pulled over. It had actually been a very long day. I was tired and also had to use the bathroom.
While stopped, the policeman walked to the passenger side, and flashed the light motioning for me to roll down the window. I did and he asked me if there was an emergency. I explained to him that I thought he was some kook following me and I had to use the bathroom, both completely true. I obviously didn't know that it was a police car. He asked me where I was going. I told him home. He asked for the address and nearest cross street. I told him. He asked if that's the address on my driver's license. I responded that it was. He then took my driver's license and registration, checked it. I haven't had a speeding ticket in nearly 20 years. I haven't had an accident in 20+ years. I was certain I was going to get a ticket, because after all, I was going pretty damn fast in full view of the officer. I waited for the hammer to drop.
To my surprise, he came back and handed me my driver's license and registration. He told me that he could tell that I was a bit shaken because I thought I was being followed, and he believed me. He advised me that the next time something like that happens, to call 911. He told me to drive safely, and I was free to go. Relieved, I told him I would and I thanked him.
So kudos to this police officer for having the ability to gauge sincerity and being the caliber of person to be merciful, show compassion and understanding. I really appreciate him giving me the utmost consideration.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
