About the Business
The Monster has 30 years experience of The Village and the gay history of the iconic neighborhood. There are 2 floors each with it's own full bar. The street level opens early and offers a piano where you can sing or just listen; or sit a spell on a stool at our 360 bar. The nightly basement disco features the hardwood dance floor with a dance-up bar, and the lights and sound to flash and blast your troubles away. They offer the strongest drinks around (check out the user posted pics of shots) where if you think they are weak, you've obviously had too many; and specials so cheap, your wallet shows little sign of what was consumed. They have friendly bartenders who remember your drink and your name and state licensed security to keep you safe inside and on your way out. Drag performers frequent whether for a venue hosted weekly event, or if blown in by a fabulous wind. Go Go Hotties can be found nightly. A watering hole so classic, it's no surprise new parties are springing up.

Q:
Dress code there?
A:
No dress code. This is a gay bar. So look the part. Jeans, shorts, tees, khakis, what have you. Think piano bar.

They don't ID most of the time anyways

I was a regular member of this club, and yesterday I was treated like shit for no reason whatsoever I was throwing out the club because the guy said that I was interrupting a conversation the bartender between a guy who plays the piano there now you guys work together yeah supposed to be working but meanwhile I got holes in a conversation and I'm a paying customer so I advise everybody not to go to that club because first of all I figured as a black man to be mistreated is a very unfortunate thing and now I understand why they have that message Black Lives Matter, but God sees everything the one who said I should leave was an Indian man, who swear to God, he thought he was better but he wasn't better than nobody else and God sees everything and my mom from heaven told me don't you ever step foot back in that club and so you know what I plan on doing never stepping foot back into that club to tell you was Sacha was alive that club was the number one I was in Shasha passed away that club has been going downhill. I don't even see many black men in their how many Black people did you throw a lot of that club

they hate women here. stay away. I was having a great time until the bartenders decided they no longer wanted to serve me & my friend after two drinks. a couple people attempted to intervene on our behalf, but the bartenders looked at my friend and I then said we had to order elsewhere.

Worst bar ever! None personable staff, racist and rude! Take your money elsewhere. We had just ordered our drinks and a girl bartender w big curly hair never gave us a check and out of no where said they could no longer serve us. How are we supposed to pay if never got a check and we were sitting at the bar. It was our first drink. Try doing your job before you attack customers about payment. Guess the name of the bar is fitting.

Some weird stuff going on here. My friends and I had a very odd night at the monster last weekend and it sounds pretty similar to the review below..weird patrons following us around the bar and then outside, the bouncer not letting us out the door...be careful. I would agree that there are some shady characters preying on drunk people.

I just went to the club While I was in town for work. Everything got super weird.
I wasn't able to get to the downstairs bar, too many people, and the drag show just happened to be starting. So I kind of just stood to the side to watch. Was asked to move to the dance floor by security because I was on the side moving my hips. I tried to enjoy myself. Tipped the queen.
After the first performance I checked my wallet and realized I only had big bills. I tried to leave the dance floor and go upstairs to split my bills and get a drink since downstairs was so crowded. I was accosted by several patrons trying to stop me from leaving. Stopping me with comments like ''Hey baby. Stop. Where are you going'' and if I tried to walk away more comments of ''Stop. Wait. Why are you in such a hurry? I wanna ask you some questions.''
At this point I was weirded out and tried to leave. I tried to go to the front door where the front person instructed me that I could not leave through the front door. They said that the exit was straight past the bar. I went past the bar and straight to the other side where they told me to go and the door says that an alarm will go off and to use the front 'entance'. I tried to go back out the front door where the staff tried to direct me away again but I just told them that it said emergency exit, kept walking and left. The bouncer made a scene as I walked out throwing his hands in the air and yelling "I have no idea what's going on! "
It is obvious at the very least that the establishment is preying on vulnerable and drunk people by trying to confuse them. I did not feel safe in this location. And I am disappointed that this is how we are representing the gay community.
Shady practices are going on here.
I wouldn't trust the ownership of this establishment as far as this 5'3'' trans girl could throw them.Helpful 4Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 1 - Anonymous A.Washington, DC0180Feb 12, 2023Updated review
Went last Saturday and the unfriendly (and difficult to understand) doorman asked to see my driver's license. I'm in my early 70s and hardly underage. More significantly, he scanned the barcode on the back of the license, so as to possibly steal my personal information and use it to create a fake ID. Given the overpriced drinks and the treatment at the door, I won't be back.

I stood at the bar and he just looked at me until I ordered my drink without ever saying "hello" or speaking a word. He never told me the price, but I produced a $20 bill which he forcefully snatched from my hand as though I was not planning to give it to him! Then he plopped my change down on the bar and moved on. No "thank you" or any other greeting. We the customers have kept The Monster alive all these decades and have provided employment for the staff, so I little bit of courtesy isn't too much to ask for, is it?

I used to love the Monster, but their drinks are now waaaaaaaay overpriced. The service is slow and the staff at the door are rude.

Current ownership is despicable at the Monster. Once a very nice place. As you can see with 4 consecutive negative reviews beneath mine regarding management and the loser door attendant who loves to play boss and toss folks out without indicating a reason. The price of a well drink is $11 and they switched over to the small glasses which hold 50% as much. All in all, they create situations for their regulars to spend top dollar to dance in a musty basement that hasn't been renovated since 1980. Don't patronize them. I'm certain their doors will soon be closing. The crowds are half the size they were since Chris (current owner) has turned the place into a total drag queen low class mess as they solicitate you for tips to the borderline of harassing you for money which the Owner defending them and having no regard to the long- standing customers who supported this place for the last 30 years.

The doorman at this place was a real POS--
.wouldn't let us in because we had an unopened bottle of water. We walked away, drank some of it and came back with it in his bag. He insisted on checking our bags-- My friend asked if he could just leave the water by the door and the doorman said 'take your water and get out!"
What a shit show thus place is.Helpful 7Thanks 2Love this 1Oh no 0 - Craig K.Santa Monica, CA07May 6, 2022
Unfortunately had a very disappointing end to my evening at The Monster. I tried to exit the club and a club worker called Ebie grabbed me viciously with his long sharp nails and wouldn't let me leave the regular exit of the club. The way he grabbed me was aggressive and completely out of order. I told Ebie to be a gentle and not to handle me that way. His response was to call the bouncer and asked for me to be removed from the club. Have always had an amazing time at The Monster - the staff are usually incredibly friendly and professional. This behavior from Ebie was abusive and is unacceptable
