My favorite sushi restaurant EVER. I've been coming here since 1999 when I tried sushi for the first time ever as a kid. It's almost hard to write a review because I've been coming here for so long and they are so consistent.
Their flavors are immaculate. Some favorite go-to items: flaming shrooms, black and white, bbq tuna with both sauces, Chu toro, xango cheesecake, freaky or regular edamame, salmon sashimi, bon bons, and more.
I lack the vocabulary to describe just how good their dishes are, especially the sauces. They try to take our plates (because they're so great about clearing them) and we guard them until the plates are practically licked clean. We love to take the daikon radish and soak it in the Black-and-white sauce once we've eaten all the fish.
They have a gluten free menu, so I'm able to bring my cousin who has a lot of allergies here. They are really careful with cross contamination with allergies and are willing to substitute the tempura shrimp with tempura asparagus for my mom who developed a shrimp allergy (a surprisingly tasty substitution)
Service is always impeccable and the ambiance is enjoyable. They've always kept it updated over the years. Been coming to Mikuni for 24 years now and I will as long I love and as long as they exist.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 604356Apr 14, 2024
Mikuni is a "chain" of Sac so in regards to this location, I have been here twice and my experience has been good both times. Ordered takeout last night and the customer service was very friendly and helpful over the phone and in person. Everything ordered was tasty as it's always been.
My parents introduced me to Mikuni at a young age, we used to dine at the Arden location or the one on Eureka Rd before the Fountains/Galleria was developed. I do appreciate how their flavor and quality has always been consistent over the years. But I have noticed the price increase, which I get because of inflation, but am not a fan of how much the rolls have downsized. I remember they were fuller and bigger previously. We'd usually order platters to celebrate birthdays, holidays, special occasions or if we're just craving over the years and with our most recent platter order, I've noticed how much less full the platter B/D we've always ordered in the past looks now. But if not portion sizes, Mikuni always manages to still hit the mark with taste/flavors.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 30142554Mar 15, 2024
EXPENSIVE FOR MEDIOCRE SUSHI!
OVER HYPED! QUALITY HAS GONE DOWN HILL!
03/14/24 around 4PM. Went in and we got greeted and sat right away.. awesome! First thing I noticed when we walked in was how BEAUTIFUL the aesthetics of this place was! It got busy right after we were seated. I was amazed at so many workers working here!!! Wowww! Does it really get that busy? I did see several groups of coworkers just chatting with each other. Easy-peasy work environment.. NICE!
We got handed a thick ass menu book lol. I'm like AAAAHHHH too many things to order.. OHH NOOO!!! My anxiety of indecisiveness started to kick in. I immediately thought, I think I'll be wasting time just trying to see what to order and so that is what happened. There are too many things that you can order here. You have to go through the whole book just to see what you like. I didn't want to waste time and we were not planning on spending more than $40 for EXPENSIVE MEDIOCRE SUSHI, so we just looked at the Happy Hour Menu.
5/5 stars. Spicy Scallop Hand Roll Happy Hour: $6.50+.
Regular price $9.50+! Not worth this price.
Spicy scallop, sauce, masago, onion.
- I love how tender and flavorful the spicy scallop was. Right amount of ingredients through out the hand roll meaning it had scallop through out the hand roll vs. only rice at the bottom of the hand roll. Nori sheet was crispy delicious. Sushi rice was made perfectly. Not too sweet nor vinegarry and not mushy.
3/5 stars. Negihama Hand Roll Happy Hour: $6.5+.
Regular price $8.95+! Not worth this price.
Minced yellow tail and onion.
- Tender yellowtail, duhhh cause it's minced! I want to taste the authentic yellowtail whole pieces and not minced. Fish was not fresh. Might have been frozen then thawed out from morning or so. The minced pieces were only at the beginning of the hand roll. Half of the handroll was rice. Nori sheet was crispy delicious. Sushi rice was made perfectly. Not too sweet nor vinegarry and not mushy.
0/5 stars. Thursday Happy Hour Ngiri: Shiro Maguro (Albacore Tuna) $6.5+. Regular price is $8+, I think. I might be wrong.
- MUSHY. periodddthhh! NOT FRESH.
2/5 stars. Iron Chef Roll $11 some thing +.
Regular price $14.95+!!! Like whaaaaaaaa? For 8 small ass pieces?! Get outtaaa herrre!!! Lol. Not worth this price.
Panko shrimp, white tuna, sauce, masago, and micro greens.
Yuppp this roll is micro af!!!
- Crispy shrimp tempura... good, but nothing wow about it. Just ya average shrimp tempura. Ordinary sauce. Regular thawed out from the morning or so white tuna. The micro greens were not fresh cause I can see that it's dry. Only thing perfect was the sushi rice! Good thing we didn't have to pay regular price for this.
We already spent about $30+ and I wasn't full. I wasn't content and happy, so we stopped ordering.
Yes, our waitress was sweet and attentive but TOO ATTENTIVE. To the point where I'm laughing and having a good time with my partner but she bugginnn ahaha! She came to our table like 6 times just to ask if we wanted to order more. Like lady, are you bored?! Lol. The place wasn't even packed, so it's not like we needed to order and leave asap for other customers to dine in.
Idk. I don't think I'll be coming back unless I get invited and my meal is free. Not worth spending my money here. Maybe the quality of their sushi was bangin when they first opened but not now. Over hyped!
Mikuni had me at good-bye.
Still tho.. happy eat's ya'll =)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Mikuni's set the standard for quality sushi decades ago in Sacramento, and they've now grown into multiple locations around the valley.
We were at The Fountains in Roseville, and decided to forgo our dinner plans and have sushi instead.
Mikuni's was packed, and the wait time was close to 45 minutes. The seating hostess offered outdoor seating with the assurance that the heat lamps would keep us warm. They didn't.
Our server was like a scene out of an 80's movie, where the guy is completely clueless and either doesn't pick up on subtle hints and is oblivious, and doesn't pick up on verbal cues either. It took him forever to come over and take our drink order, and when he did, he wanted us to order at the same time, and we hadn't even had a chance to peruse through the menu. When he came back the second time, it was to take the order, but had not brought our drinks. At that point, we said that we were going to order appetizers first, and then go from there. We ordered the pepper-fin and the croquettes. The server came back in the middle of our appetizers, while we were both eating, and stood there, looking at us until we looked up at him. He mumbled something that was in audible, but he clearly wanted to take our order. We both had to ask him to come back when we were done eating so that we could decide what we wanted to have for dinner.
The pepper fin was brought to us and presented sloshing around in the bowl. Frankly, it was rather underwhelming. The fish was sliced thicker than it should have been, and it needed the jalapeños just to give it some flavor.
Their croquettes are mystery to me. Not only were they extremely underwhelming, the lack of flavor doesn't make sense. Adding dips, sauces, etc. is supposed to enhance the flavor not create the flavor. The pseudo tartar sauce that accompanied the croquettes was mediocre, but it was the only flavor on the plate .
We shared a small sushi place that had sashimi and a roll on it. I had asked for some additional sauce for the sushi, and it arrived when we were done with our meal. No apologies, no comments, it was just dropped off. Unless you're ordering your sushi roll without any sauce, the sushi roll should not be dry, and there should be enough flavor in the roll to be enjoyed as is. The roll presented nicely, but definitely needed the sauce to enhance it. The sad thing is is that the extra umami sauce that was brought to us was incredibly watery and salty. This is not how umami sauce is supposed to be.
Our server never bothered to come back to see if our drinks needed to be refilled, or if we wanted something else, and in the middle of all of this, not only did he drop the check off, but he placed the check next to me where my cutlery service would have been placed . I absolutely loathe one wait staff does that. There was plenty of room on the table, where it could have been placed, and to make the assumption as to which one of us was going to pay for dinner, is completely rude, not to mention the fact that we weren't asked if we wanted anything else or asked if we wanted dessert.
Sadly, we won't be going back.Helpful 17Thanks 4Love this 12Oh no 3 - Apr 24, 20243 check-ins
The BBQ tuna is one of the most amazing bites on the planet! I was so excited to dig in, I forgot to take a picture! I just enjoyed being in the moment. The other rolls were fabulous as usual. Fresh, flavorful and great service. Eating at the sushi bar gives a great view of the variety of rolls.

It's a Friday night and 3 of my friends and I decided to visit Mikuni in Roseville to celebrate a birthday. We arrived a little bit before 6 and the place was poppin. My friends checked in and they said it was about a 45 min wait. No biggie we walked around a bit and chatted until it was our time. By the 45 min-ish mark, it was our turn to be seated. Sat down and the first thing I noticed was the little sign. Vote for De'Aaron Fox for the NBA All Star and get their Fox roll for 50% off and that's what I did. lol I also got the beef curry. My friends got a variety of rolls but not sure of what they got but it all looked delicious. Tried a few pieces of their Edamame and gyoza which was pretty good. Fox roll was bombdotcom and so was the beef curry. Everyone enjoyed their choices. The whole table was sufficiently stuffed.
Food was good, restaurant was clean, wait wasn't too bad (as expected for a Friday night in a popular area, parking was kind of crazy (hard to find a spot but again expected), service was alright. It was my first time at this location and it was a pretty good experience.Helpful 4Thanks 1Love this 7Oh no 0 - 232891739Apr 15, 20241 check-in

We love this location as they have an outdoor area. There is a water feature that is relaxing.
The staff are always friendly and answer any questions I have about the menu.
We enjoy their cocktails and rolls. We always start with the BBQ Tuna with both sauces.
Our favorite place for sushi.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Tammy,
Thank you for the 5 star review - we look forward to serving you again soon!
Chiyoh AraiApr 18, 2023Previous reviewWe had not tried the new location (old McCormick and Schmicks) so thought we would check it out. Got there when they opened and there were quite a few people already waiting. It was a cold rainy day so had to sit inside.
We sat at the bar and were greeted right away and given menus. They were still setting up but always take a while to look over the large menu. So many good things to choose from.
The restaurant was quite a bit brighter than before so looks better. It was already busy so can get a little noisy. There are quite a few TVs to watch sports.
I ordered the Yuz Knees cocktail and started with the garlic edamame and BBQ Tuna with 2 sauces.
We also ordered a 49er Jack and Spicy Johnny roll. Finished with a Japanese Fashioned.
All of the food was great and the service was great too. The bartenders were very nice. We will be back soon. - 5949516554Aug 14, 2023
Considering how much of a sushi snob I am, I will say that "Mikuni Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar" has consistently been one of Sacramento's most well-known and established sushi restaurants for several decades. As of 2023, they currently have 8 Sacramento-area locations; their original in Fair Oaks as well as Midtown Sacramento, Elk Grove, Folsom, Arden Fair, Davis, and (two in) Roseville as well as one in Concord, there's a reason why people keep coming back here time and time again. The location I am reviewing is at The Fountains at Roseville which has been in operation since 2011.
I've been to at least 5 of the locations mentioned but this was my first time at the Roseville Fountains location. During my visit which was the evening of Saturday 8/12/2023 at 7:25pm, the parking lot (as expected) was quite full. And upon entering, this was a packed house. After giving the hostess my name and number, she had mentioned it would be about a 45-minute wait. The restaurant has a very modern, lively feel to it with a generous seating area. The overall lighting paired with the wooden flooring and open bar area was all well laid out. There is also a nice outdoor seating area while has great views of the sunset and ample space for large groups.
As far as the wait time, it had only taken about 37 minutes from the time my name was added until my party was seated, not bad considering this place had small and large groups entering and exiting. And for a place that does NOT take reservations, I will say that this was a warm welcome on a Saturday evening. Once seated, we were given iced waters while all menus were done on a QR code through your smartphone. Not a fan of the smartphone menus but many restaurants have adapted this concept.
I will say that the menu itself is huge with almost a little too much to offer. You will notice how many raw and non-raw sushi roll combinations this place has; at least a few dozen varieties. They also carry very traditional Japanese items (sashami & nigiri) as well as quite a bit of non-fish items including chicken teriyaki plates as well as beef and pork. The appetizers also showcase a ton of options including edamame, gyoza, and ribs as well as salads and Donburi. Mikuni is also known for their party platters which are great when dividing up various offerings for large groups. Finally, Mikuni offers a full bar including a ton of beers, wines, Sake, well drinks, and non-alcoholic options. To try every single item on their menu would take a whole year; that's just how much they offer here.
To start off our evening, I ended up ordering a very popular appetizer item, the "Garlicky Edamame". This included a healthy dose of garlic, lemon, cilantro, butter. I also opted for a 2-piece of "Sashimi" (raw fish over sticky rice). As far as my drink, I went with a 21 oz. draft of "Asahi" dry beer. For my main sushi roll of choice, I ended up going with their "Incredible". This roll was torched and deep fried while ingredients consisted of spicy tuna, panko shrimp, white tuna, avocado, sauce, masago, and green onions. Our appetizers arrived in less than 10 minutes while my main roll came a few minutes later.
I'm not going to spoil anything but the garlic edamame was on a whole other level; the perfect consistency of garlic and warm butter that literally melts in your mouth when nibbling out the edamame soybeans. My sashimi was also made to perfection but were a bit on the smaller side. As far as my "Incredible" roll; it was definitely above average; however some of the sauces toppings almost made it too sweet for my taste buds. Not that it's a bad thing but it didn't have as much spicy tuna as some of the spicy mayo almost overpowered it. I would say that this roll was about a 4 out of 5.
After indulging in my appetizers and rolls, I still had room for my dessert. This is where we tried their "Xango Cheesecake". This succulent treat consisted of rich, smooth, creamy cheesecake (slightly warmed to room temperature) and has a tangy finish. The cheesecake itself is rolled in a flaky tortilla, topped with powdered sugar and drizzled with caramel and raspberry sauces. I will tell you this is a must-try and each bite dipped in the caramel & raspberry puree was absolutely mouth watering.
I will say that "Mikuni" is always consistently amazing while it is more of an experience than anything else. This has been and continues to be the go-to spot for date nights, birthday parties, large gatherings, and everything in between. Its not the most intimate place since it does get very loud. They offer lunch specials until 4pm and Happy Hour every Mon-Fri from 2-5pm. Mikuni also offers generous hours of operation being opened from 11:30am-9pm Sunday through Thursday and 11:30am-10pm on Friday/Saturday. When you factor in the ambiance, food quality, prices (this place is on the higher end for sushi), and overall experience, I am giving the Fountains at Roseville "Mikuni" an above average four stars.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0
