I live near the area... it's a sketchy neighborhood, but as long as you stay in large buildings with their own private parking structures the like one Moskatel's has (my loft has this too) it's pretty safe. If you're staying within the store, the only time you'll see the scary bums is probably on the drive there. Parking is free with validation for 2 hours...
It's got a huge selection and has almost every craft related item you can think of-- at a pretty good price. Of course they don't have EVERYTHING but it's gettin' close-- if you don't find it in the store, you can always walk a few blocks down and check it out.
The bums aren't that scary.... just ignore them and you'll be fine.
Have a list ready because it's like shopping hungry if you don't...
I got there on a Sunday, and almost had a purple twinkie! (If you go on a Sunday you must park on San Julian), they have 2 entrances and the entrance on Wall Street is closed on Sundays.

Minus the one star because they're a tad over priced. Unless you're planning to get a list of items, then it's worth the drive. They do have things that a Michael's would normally carry but considering they're in the flower district they carry a wider selection.
I'm a sucker for a craft store, so I don't mind the schlep.
Appears that Moskatels is part of Michaels but the old sign is kept. I spent about 2 hours here just browsing. They have absolutely everything. Everything related to arts and crafts, parties, events. Just when you thought you got to the end of the store, there's an annex out back with even more stuff.
You want ribbons? They have a kabillion kinds in texture, width, fabric, patterns, material. I was quite amazed.
I bought a big basket after spending about 20 minutes browsing through the basket aisles and trying to determine the proper size and shape.
I'm glad I don't have any talents in arts, nor the interest in crafts...otherwise i would be broke spending all my money here!
Beware that occasionally they have 40% off sales, which makes you wonder if paying sticker price for any item is for chumps. Just make sure you think about Cost vs. Worth. :)
Everything you could ever look for for all your party needs. ALL different types of party needs!
They have everything for a variety of budgets, styles and needs!
I've planned three weddings and a grand birthday and I went here everytime.
Street parking.
