How is the Tres Leches?

It's good as a cake. But I know what it's supposed to taste like and this was not like the tres leches I'm used to at my favorite spot in NYC.

This is a normal spot for good Mexican food but today I noticed a lot has changed. First the decor is completely different. The tables now look like cafeteria tables and the large comfortable chairs at the tables are gone. There are standard hard brown chairs now. The tables were colorful and decorative and so were the walls but it's really plain now. The walls are painted plainly but the mural of Frida Kahlo remains.
Service was rather slow as our waitress had a difficult time with English.
My margarita was missing the kick it normally has and I had to add a shot of Malibu to it. I ordered steak tacos on flour tortillas and my husband ordered chicken. The flavor of both were good but my food came out cold and I had to send it back for heating. I think it may have been sitting a while. When it came back the tortillas were hot but the meat Luke warm. Also my tortillas ended up being corn although I requested flour.
I do believe the name of the restaurant is now changing to Cinco De Mayo as that's the name on the menus.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Oct 9, 2016Previous reviewGreat margaritas and the table side guacamole is awesome!!! It's rather tight but the food is worth it

I'm happy that I'm able to update my previous review, which has been several years!
My most recent visit, a few weeks ago, was pleasant. Bar service was good. Drinks were well made and strong. Definitely felt a bit of a buzz! The chicken quesadillas were tasty and filling. Prices are fair.
I need to visit more often!!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jun 22, 2019Previous reviewI would have liked to give this place higher ratings but I just can't. The service was fine, the drinks were decent, but the food was just meh. For the price it should be better quality in my honest opinion. I ordered the carne asada tacos and the tortillas were overcooked and the meat had no flavor. I can find much better tasting tacos at a fast food joint! I absolutely would not go out of my way to come back here!

Came here for a friend's bday tonight, and absolutely loved this place. The food was amazingly tasty. Margaritas was so good, not to mention the table side guacamole was superb. The enchilada combo I ordered were delicious, it truly reminded me of Don Pablo's. My waiter Alejandro was super friendly and knowledgeable of everything they served. As I had dietary restrictions, he was careful to note down my substitutions. Everything is fresh and well made. For the dessert, they gave us not only cake, but churros w/ ice cream on the house! Oh my, were the churros crunchy outside but soft and creamy inside.

Mezcal is now closed! It is now Cinco De Mayo.
Not sure about Timonium. Too bad, they had a great menu.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Feb 13, 2022Previous reviewMezcal is a Mexican staple in the Baltimore area. I was feeling hungry and wanting some good Mexican food, and good food we got. The flavor of the pollo/chicken in my fajita salad was so delicious. But I felt they had to many bell peppers, grilled and non grilled. Hubby's taco salad had a good flavor, but he noticed that there was no more than a teaspoon of refried beans at the bottom of the salad shell.
Mezcal is popular and therefore crowded here in a weekend evening. Unfortunately the table beside ours had a drunk group of friends who were loudly dropping profanity in our ears as if they were reciting poetry. Ugh. Our table was small and the chairs not the most comfortable. There were some stains on the food, likely from past drinks spilled. Our waiter was pleasant but didn't visit the table much, so no refills of water, and we had to get another waitress to bring our check.
Bathrooms were okay, not spotless but not terrible.
Will we return-it's likely but we will try for a weeknight when it's not so busy. - Jana H.Abilene, TX6949Apr 4, 2024
Name has changed- to Cinco De Mayo
Margaritas were very good, and it stops there. Beef fajitas had very little meat, and the meat tasted boiled. It was covered in a red sauce that was not good. The beans and guacamole were both runny. The chicken nachos were terrible- boiled meat or something. The music was loud and repetitive. We are from out of town. But if we lived locally, we would never return. I will say the waitress was nice.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 2, 2023Updated review
While we've been going to Mezcal for years... the prices have increased beyond the foods value and the portion sizes have shrunk. The chips and salsa are still very good, nearly great. The drinks are not special in any way. Their "special" prices aren't special. Their sangria is 2/3 boxed wine (not fresh made or home made). Beers aren't cheap, and the margs are a. It overpriced IMO. The food has good flavor, the burritos not as great S I recall, fish tacos tasty!
I'm sad to say that I don't know why. I will return. The value wasn't there. For a party of 4, one drink each, and. Tan if $130 seems about $30 too high. There is definitely better and more reasonable spots close.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 27, 2020Previous reviewAs always, this is the spot to ring delicious food!!! Everything on the menu is great, you really cannot go wrong. Chicken, shrimp, beef, steak, pork... all good. The only problem I have is deciding on the dish for the evening. Oh well,'until next time, Mezcal!!

This place can be very very busy on the weekend evenings and sometimes drink refills and your meal will take a little longer than expected to come out/ that being said. The food is amazing it's fresh and flavorful and the margaritas are tasty and but the spot- it's decorated with bright colors and a very festive vibe.

I went to Mezcal for lunch. I entered and was greeted by the waitress. I asked if I could see a lunch menu and she shared the lunch menu was for dine in only. I was planning to take my food to go.
The lights are dimmed in the restaurant and the decor was very on theme for a Mexican restaurant.
I decided to stick around and ordered the chicken fajitas. I also ordered a peach mojito which was sweet but really tasty. While I was waiting on the food, I had the chips and salsa. Both tasted like they were made in restaurant, very good.
The chicken fajitas came out sizzling and was a large portion for lunch. I took the first bite and the fajitas were great. I ate until I was full but wanted to finish my food.
I recommend for lunch for dine in and I plan to come back for dinner.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lori B.Reisterstown, MD1561029Mar 20, 2024
My favorite Mexican Restaurant in the area! I recently moved out of state and I miss Mezcal. Whenever I come back to visit, this will always be on my to-do list. Great Mexican food, good drinks, festive atmosphere and wonderful servers!
