I sure have missed this place. When they were located in San Leandro, I would always come here after visiting my dentist. I would celebrate having No Cavities!!

Only one time, have I made it to their shop in Richmond, CA. They are located in the Hilltop Shopping Mall across from 24 Hr Fitness. Really hidden away in that barren mall. I know that I would be coming here after every workout session to reward myself!

There are two items here that I absolutely love! The first item is their Sweet Potato Cupcake! It is about the size of a Costco muffin! You could easily split it between 2 or 3 people. I'm selfish so I eat all by myself!

The second item that is the best I've ever had anywhere is their Red Velvet Cake!! I've tried it at birthday parties a couple of times. I prefer having their Red Velvet Cupcakes. Like their Sweet Potato cupcakes, the Red Velvet cupcake is enormous! They should call it a Red Velvet Muffin!! The Cream Cheese icing combined with the Red Velvet cake is perfect! No one else even comes close to being as good!!

Oh, how I wish you were still in San Leandro! Too bad for me. :(

We came here for a slice of sweet potato cake (3.75). Everything is at least 3 dollars. The cake was very sweet, very moist, and full of cinnamon flavor. We liked it.

They have a big assortment of cakes. Caramel cake, Red Velvet, German chocolate, etc.

Very quiet though. We were the only ones there. Too bad. They should really try to advertise more. I also like the Taqueria next door.

This place blew us away!! It really is the BEST red velvet cake you're going to try in the Bay Area (I also love Sibby's cupcakes - but these taste wayyyy more home made).

So here's the story of how we discovered Marita & her hubby's bakery! We happened to be driving down from Sonoma one day and had a massive craving for red velvet. Like true Yelpers, we checked where the BEST red velvet cakes were closeby. We were directed to the old location in San Leandro, but that's closed down! So we ended up going to a different bakery for our red velvet craving, which was nice but not super.

Two weeks later, we were in the North Bay once again and decided to find the new location for Marita's Sweet Potato Pie Co. which is now in Richmond! I was expecting extreme ghetto style mall with a scary entrance - but in fact it's a nice place on a "hilltop" as the address indicates, right next to a 24hr fitness (talk about self control for the poor people exercising right opposite the bakery)!

We tried just one slice of regular red velvet cake and we almost died. The cake is fluffy and freshly baked & the frosting is light and just right! The slices are HUGE and cost just $3.50 each. Would've been awesome if they had fresh coffee to sip alongside it, but I'm not complaining! Hubby wanted to retain the euphoria through the week, so we ended up buying two massive cupcakes, one plain and one with pecans. OMG I can't rave about this place ENOUGH.

Beside the fact that the product is incredibly good... the owners are adorable as well. It's a real Mom & Pop store and I wish them all the success in the World. I do wish the place could get a face lift to attract more people to sit and enjoy in the space they have, but they need to offer coffee or some drinks on the side to make people stay. The cakes definitely draw the crowds... now we've seen a nice part of Richmond, we may be back for more in the future :)

Long overdue review for this place. Since it's the holiday season and people are on the lookout for desserts I thought I'd tell you all to get your holiday pies and cakes from Marita's! It'll complete your holiday meals and satisfy your sweet tooth. It's a couple owned bakery and they are 'TOTES ADORBS'!

It used to be located at the corner of my street in San Leandro. We would frequent for all our dessert needs. My family LOOOOOVES their sweet potato pie. A few years back, they relocated to Hilltop Mall and we started going through Marita's pie withdrawals. So we started making that journey out to Richmond just to get some pie. Luckily for me, my noves lives down the street so I can stop by on my way home.

A friend of mine told me he would drive from Pittsburg to San Leandro just to get some red velvet cake. After hearing that I HAD to try the red velvet and I'm glad I did. I'm not one to go out and get pies or cakes for no reason, but I will get this cake whenever I can. It comes as a full cake, or individual cupcakes and the cupcakes are HUGE!

I can't wait to finish my Thanksgiving meal from a pie from Marita's. There may be a line waiting outside to get your dessert- but it goes fast and gets the job done.

Yes, this is the same adorable couple that own the place in San Leandro of the same name.

Though the bakery is named for the Sweet Potato Pie Marita is so proud of, most of the devotees I know are hooked on the red velvet cake, cup cakes and cake slices with and without nuts. I guess that is because it is so hard to get red velvet cake and once you have it you will always seek it out.

Visitors to this location will note it is on the 24 hour fitness side of the mall. Don't let all those exercisers fool you- they are working out so they can get an extra GINORMOUS cupcake on the way out.

Bless you, Marita, Long may you bake.

There once was a baker who lived in the mall

He wasn't very short but neither too tall

He baked and he baked, from morning until dawn

The best red velvet cake you'll lay your eyes upon.

I asked the baker for the secret recipe.

He replied and smiled, "not over my dead body."

I've been coming here for years. I discovered Marita's cake from the farmer's market at Grand Lake sold by Charlie Pies - but he stopped selling them for whatever reason. I was broken hearted until Lo and behold I discovered them so close to work at The Hilltop mall. Yes, it is a trek and the only reason one might venture into this mall. It's located in front of 24-hour fitness, oh the irony.

I've seen the owners Marita and hubby a handful of times, but it's Jamal the baker who has been a consistent fixture in this little shop.

The red velevet cake is so moist with the right touch of everything. The icing complements the sweetness of the cake. I have been pestering Jamal for the recipe for years now, he says, it's locked in his head and was sworn to secrecy. Water boarding, anyone?

Came here based on many positive reviews, and got my Mama a Red Velvet loaf with Pecan. The cake itself was super delicious, the frosting, however, is super sweet.

      Here goes the breakdown:
Red Velvet cake - 4 to 5 stars, very moist and tasty
Frosting - 2 to 3 stars, not as smooth as other places I tried, very sweet, i like the pecans though
Value - 5 Stars, for a Loaf, it was only a little over $10

Overall, 3 Stars, awesome cake, super sweet and not too smooth frosting

Finally tried out this place after watching 21 Jump Street at the theatre down the way. Oh yes.

Closest to the 24 Hour Fitness entrance to the mall, I would not do well having this sweet shop so close to the gym! Glad I don't go there!

I didn't expect it, but all of the cakes are cut up into peices and packaged in plastic clamshell containers. I was on the hunt for Red Velvet, but they had many other flavors of cakes as well. I think of these types of cakes as cut up, two layer bundt cakes. You can of course get whole cakes as well.

Two peices of Red Velvet cost $6.00, and they take cards for any amount over $5. The cake was good, not super super moist, and the frosting was good too. I don't really care for the pre-cut nature of the operation, because it's wasteful, the presentation is unattractive and cafeteria like, and I think dries out the cakes a little bit. Still, the cake is good, so 3 stars works for me. I didn't see any cupcakes the day I was there, a Saturday.

I favor the business that sells cupcake versions at the Jack London Square Farmers Market- her cake is WAY more moist, and the frosting more generous and cream cheezy.

OK real talk once you get past the guilt of passing by the big ass windows of 24 hour fitness seeing people working and sweating it out . While scurrying past very quickly past the gym and heading to get the Red Velvet cupcake right across the way you realize that is the only exercise you gonna get 2day.

Ok enough of my guilt and on 2 the cupcakes a friend brought me in to this spot and I will say the Red velvet are the bizzness....Hella big for $2.50 and w/ nuts (pecans) for $2.75 .and I usually don't like nuts in my mouth... Can you say pretty damn bomb..This is the spot 4 the red velvet

You can get 9" cakes for 22.00 and under..Plus Peach cobblers for a steal the prices are excellent

Maybe next time I can go to the gym first and then be less guilty hmm just a thought

Red velvet w/ nuts, 4*. All cakes are moist and tasty. Diabetics be forewarned, even a half a slice probably isn't for you. Perfect for round the clock assignments. I love that we can pick up a full round last minute although it makes me wonder when and how many they've baked.

Here's the truth, I HATE PASSING BY 24F just to get to their location. If there's a hidden path, someone please share.
