Review from Josh K.
Falafel-wise, Mahmoun's is not the 100% best in the world, but for $2.50 it is one of the best price to taste values in Manhattan. The sandwich making process involves squashing the falafel balls into more of a patty or spread, so you won't get much of that falafel crunch, but it'll also be a more consistent sandwich experience bite-for-bite.
The lamb shawarma was the surprise winner here. At $5.50 the pita bulges with juicy succulent lamb and onions, and through some feat of physics, manages not to fall apart. Douse it with a couple drops of their spicy harissa and it's a certified foodgasm. The taste combination brought me back to my experience at a famous doner kebap stand in Kreuzberg, Berlin, where I had something extremely similar and just as delicious.
The place is worlds better than your average halal cart and extremely competitive with them on price.
Judging by the reviews, next time I should just get the lamb shawarma and a side of falafel balls ($1) for the best of both worlds. I can't wait! -

I think Mamoun's is a bit over-rated. As in, it's not the best falafel I've ever had in my life. However, it's very good, it's very fast, and it's inexpensive.
When I am craving a fast and cheap falafel sandwich in Greenwich Village, Mamouns is the place I go. If I'm looking for high quality Mediterranean food, I'd look elsewhere. -
Review from Kenny C.
Wow. $7.50 can get you lamb shawarma sandwich, a side of three falafel balls, and a mango juice.
I can say I've had better, but I can't say I've had better at this price! For $1, the falafel is a steal and a great way to supplement any meal. Tasteful, though a tad on the salty side (probably better in sandwich form).
The lamb shawarma had tons of meat and veggies (lettuce, tomatoes, and mostly raw onions). The veggies weren't super fresh, like they are at Taim. The tahini sauce really pulled the sandwich together, but the flavor of the lamb itself wasn't lacking at all. Only complaint was that the pita bread didn't seem like the best quality. It held up though, and that's all I need it to do.
The mango juice tasted like a watered down version of the nectar you can get at grocery stores selling Latin product, which doesn't make it a bad thing! It tasted like mango and the first sip after a long day of standing and walking was heavenly. For a dollar, how can you go wrong?
I went on a Thursday night around 10:30, so there was absolutely no wait, and it took maybe 2 minutes to get my order to go. Great service, good food. Definitely worth checking out if you're running low on funds! -

Halal Carts Pita Version 1! ( Remix)
That is what I think of when I came here. I can understand why people love it. It's cheap, has its own unique flavor and open late! What else do you want?
FOOD:
I have to start off saying, I'm not the biggest advocator of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern type of food. So I came in with no expectations. I ordered a side of the chickpea meatballs and I can say, It was ok to me but I can see how it is very popular. It tastes like they made it themselves, they cooked it on the spot and its hot and has its own type of flavors. I had a few bites of my friends falafel and it reminds me of Pita Pit for those that know it. A pita with a Mediterranean flavor and taste. Moist on the inside and crispier on the outside so an interesting 1-2 punch. Would I come exclusively back over and over again? Probably not unless I was in a group that just really want to go, but that's just me and my feelings towards this culture's type of cuisines. It just doesn't excite me as much as , let's say Krn/Jpn/Chinese food woot!
SERVICE:
Standard behind the counter
ATMOSPHERE:
Very small space but has like 3 tables with four seats each. Tight, a quick let's eat in ten minutes kind of place. Not a fine dining or long lounging type of place.
SUMMARY:
Great place to come after the bar/club or late nights imo. Cheap food and they are good at what they do. Not my cup of tea but you shouldn't be disappointed. -
Review from Allene T.
HELLOOOO, RED SAUCE! PHEW! I made the mistake of dumping way too much of this bottle of fire onto my sandwich once..... yikes.
Love the falafel sandwich, love the falafel balls. Crispy on the outside, hot and soft on the inside. Can't wait to try the other stuff. Seems like great late night drunk food to me ;) -

I've been going here for the past 5 years. I first tried it at the NYU location and I was hooked! I'm a vegetarian and falafels are my favorite food so I know a thing or two about how they should taste! Not only is this place da bomb, it's cheap. I take all my tourist relatives here because I'd be able to treat everyone since I'm so broke.
I prefer this St.Mark's location over the one by NYU though simply because it a bit nicer. It's still cramped and small though. -
Review from May L.
Listening to the raving about Mamoun's from a legitimate source, I added it to a food tour I created for my brother who was visiting. Mamouns delivered. So amazingly cheap, yet so delicious. Dollar for dollar you may not get a more flavorful mouthful.
We had the Lamb Shawarma, which was delicious. The meat was cooked just enough and was juicy. The pita outside was thin but adequate to hold the sandwich together. The sauce, tomatoes and went together perfectly. AND CHEAP!!!
I went on a weekday and the line was to the door. I suspect it is usually out the door. The line moves quickly though, so I wouldn't be intimidated. Seating is tough. It moves quickly and there is a bar you can stand at, but this is not a place for groups or for people that want to linger.
The only thing I'd mention is that quite a few people raved about the Mango juice. It's just mango juice. Nothing that would be particularly noteworthy in my mind though it is cheap.Listed in: Cheap Eats

Manhasset, NY
Dirt cheap and very tasty. Best in good weather, because there's not a lot of room inside so you'll provably be eating on the curb. The pitas aren't huge, but they're so cheap it's generally advisable to get 2.
Do not use the hot sauce unless you are a nipple clamp-level masochist. That stuff means business. -

SO GOOD.
Solid everything. Had the falafel ball pita, shwarma lamb falafel, and kufta falafel...at different times. Be careful with the hot sauce. It's the hottest thing I have ever had, and it ruined my first sandwich! -

i love the place, the small cramped space, the quick service, and the ridiculously cheap price for a filling falafel sandwich! Coming from the middle east though, the Falafel sandwich could be a bit more authentic in its ingredients/presentation, but overall very tasty!
But really, I can't argue with such a low price, and such a delicious and healthy meal! I love this place and am usually dropping by at least once a week for my dose of falafel! -

Updated preface/background: I used to eat more than average in terms of quantity (I've eaten 2 Chipotle Burritos in one sitting) but now I am more focused on quality and am always looking for a great deal (read: value). And my ratings don't really take service into account, although if it is a terrible experience, I'll make that known.
For $2.50, you can get a Falafel sandwich with all of the fillings. It's quick and tasty. The falafel isn't too heavily deep fried or crunchy, but it's cooked to a good sweet spot that make the falafel good. I've tried the mango juice, which is also good. And I also tried the tea, which was not very awesome to me.
I give this place a 5 since I have yet to have a better falafel than here. I read a fellow yelper's review about Toronto falafel being better than Mamoun's, so one day when I have that, I may be able to bump this back down to a 4, but so far, it's a 5 in my book.
All in all, this is a must hit, whether you're a local or a tourist. Good falafel, good food, cash only. End of story. Both locations (St. Marks and MacDougal) are good. -

Review from Elle P.
You know how Californians claim that New Yorkers don't know what good Mexican food is? If Torontonians came to NY and ate their falafels, Torontonians would say the same thing about NYers and falafels.
It's not often that I say that Toronto is better than NY in something, so it's huge news to have me declare that the average falafel in a seedy dump (well, as seedy as you get in Canada, which is still pretty squeaky clean) in Toronto is heads and tails better than Taim and Mamoun's, NY's beloved institutions for falafels.
I'm giving Mamoun's 4*s because it's 4* worthy in NYC. After eating lots of really bad falafels (why, oh, why are they so bland????) in NYC, I now realize why so many NYers love Taim and Mamoun's. They do have the better falafels in the city, but what a pity it is that NYers don't realize that there's much better falafels out there in the world.
Mamoun's falafel sandwiches are cheap ($2.50 for a huge sandwich stuffed to the gills) and pretty good. The service is super fast. I ordered, the cashier took my money, yelled something to the cook, then a split second later turned around and whipped my sandwich out to me. The whole thing took less than 2 minutes.
The resto is quite tiny, even by NY standards. There's a good possibility that you won't be able to find a seat as it's always packed whenever I go by. -
Review from Brent C.
Halal food is seriously everywhere in NYC. This was just another one of those places to try and it was much closer to my friend's place in East Village than 53rd and 6th.
I had the chicken shwarma and it was delicious with the white sauce on top. I was scared to try the red sauce since the one at 53rd and 6th was way too hot for me. But once the sauce was gone, I could tell that the chicken was incredibly dry and it just wouldn't taste good without the sauce. It was slightly disappointing but for cheap late night food and the white sauce to compensate for the dry chicken, it was pretty decent. My friend said the lamb shwarma is much better so I will have to try that next time. -

This is one of those places that I always visit when I am back in the city. The falafel and shwarma are amazing and it is super cheap. Falafel sandwich is $2.50, shwarma is about $5.

Review from Karen F.
There is no better place to go late on a Saturday night when you are drunk (or not) and stone-cold munchin'.
Mamoun's falafel has the right amount of crisp, the right amount of grease and the fresh veggies and carb-a-licious pita that I crave. Great baba ganoush, too.
And so cheap even a starving artist can eat well.
Classic NYU experience for food. -
Review from Jordan J.
This is what I think about whenever I come here: http://www.falafelgame...
I think about other things, too. Things like how beautifully seasoned the shawarma is. And how Mamoun's falafel is hands down my favorite falafel that I've had, anywhere. And how the hot sauce is laying waste to my heat/capsaicin-sensitive nociceptors.
This is one of those reviews where it's tough to build on what other people have already thrown out there. The falafel here is incredible. And it's super super super cheap. The 1500+ reviews between this and the Macdougal location will tell you the same. One of the best value meals in the city, and without any sacrifice of quality at all. A true New York establishment fully deserving of its street cred.
P.S. Perhaps I can make at least one extra contribution not mentioned in most other reviews. The grape leaves = fantastically stuffed and perfectly tangy, albeit oily. Worth picking up if you're too hungry for 1 sandwich, but not hungry enough for 2.
P.P.S. Yes, I think the falafel here is better than at Taim, even before taking Mamoun's much better prices into account.Listed in: After Midnight

The hot sauce has one flavor - Fire. It almost burned off the mustache that I was growing. I thought there would be a little more flavor.
I wasn't too thrilled with my experience there. The speed at which my shawarma was made and delivered to me, left me suspicious about the quality. I tried the lentil soup which was actually tastier than the shawarma. That should never be the case.
Get more sauces for flavor ASAP -

HEAVEN. Having just moved to NYC around 2 months ago, i discovered this place a few weeks in and I think one time I came to this place 3x in one week. It's not really close to where I live, but my bf was kinda obsessed with this place. We will make room in our stomachs after full meals just to eat here.
The food pricing is reasonable when compared to other places in NY, but its not really considered a "cheap eat" to me when compared to cheap eats in LA. I think it's about $11 a plate. BUT, they have the best lamb ANYWHERE. PERIOD.
I don't know how they do it, but they must put crack in their food. Its super addicting and you can't stop eating it once you get started. The meat is sooooo flavorful. They also have desserts and baklava!
They don't have many chairs and tables... 3 inside and a couple outside, but if you're lucky, you can cram in with some people. They're usually nice and open to sharing, and you can bond over how amazing the food is.
I've actually never had their wraps, only the plates. But many people seem to come in late at night and get it to go... I imagine this would be the best drunk food in the world. I've also been to the one in MacDougal, and even though that one is older, I like this one better.
ps. Their hot sauce will give you the CRAZIEST dreams. -
Review from Billy V.
I like this place. Very good shawarma sandwich's. Meat is moist and hot. The ratio of meat, lettuce, veggies, tahini sauce and pita is just right. Their is a very flavorful explosion of flavors. Yummy and WOW......
The Falafel sandwich also good. Crispy outside with moist inside. The biggie is they don't burn it. Ya....
Great place for fast tasty food...............
I am rating all my gyro, shawarma, doner kebab and Falafel places tonight....getting hungry......... -

I tried the Lamb Shawarma. I thought it was pretty good! It was more meat than veggies and the sauce complimented it well! Not much veggies though :(

Man, falafel=one of the best foods on the planet. Cannot believe I never tried Mamoun's when I lived in New York City for 11 years of my life. Oh well. Finally, last summer when I was down in NYC visiting an old friend we were wandering around downtown and ended up in St. Marks Places. My friend raved about Mamoun's so we had lunch there. When you walk in, the place is a bit grungy and the lighting is a bit dim and depressing. However, the falafel rocked. It came out in like a minute but it tasted fresh and was not too greasy like I thought it would be. It goes to show that if you are organized and efficient fast food can work in terms of it tasting good and being fresh. Mamoun's sure has that skill. Even better, so cheap. A cup of fresh mango juice is only a dollar and the falafel is about 2 dollars. Can't get much better than that folks. Mamoun's=definitely a win! It totally deserves to be famous and popular and I understand because their falafel rocks!!!! Whenever I visit NYC from now on, Mamoun's will always be at the top of my to do list so I can try other things like the lamb shwarma, which is probably amazing. It is a bit low budget as drinks are served in styrofome cups, but the food is definitely five star for a cheap price!!! Great for grabbing a cheap quick bite if you are in a hurry to get somewhere or for a snack after a night of clubbing. Forgot to mention if you sit inside the restaurant, at least the day I went, there was awesome loud Israeli spiritual disco music of some sort.

At least once a month I have to make a trip to the area, and at least once a month I find myself eating a $2.50 falafel sandwich here. I don't think that $2.50 can go any further than this!

Throwing in my hat into an already crowded ring because I loved Mamoun's that much.
I was recently in NY for a week on business and had already planned to fill myself with "East Coast food" for the entirety of my stay. I ate Mamoun's on the first day and it subsequently spoiled my eating plans for the rest of the trip; I ended up returning to Mamoun's five more times in seven days.
That's how good this place is.
In LA, there is no good falafel. Having grown up near San Jose's famous Falafel Drive In, I'm always down for an exquisitely prepared falafel sandwich to satisfy my cravings. Mamoun's definitely quelled my falafel lust -- and then some.
Easy on the wallet ($2.50 for a falafel sandwich), falafel that is neither dry nor overcooked and endless supplies of the most delicious hot sauce on the face of the earth make this a "must try" for anyone. Two people I was on the trip with had never tried falafel before and they loved this place just as much as I did.
The second I got back to LA, I ordered a large bottle of Mamoun's hot sauce from their website. Heavenly -- but very spicy, so beware! -

What can I say that has not been said? Nothing. Falafel are crispy but not oily, fresh lettuce and tomato. Good white sauce. My only tip is to add hummus to your falafel sandwich for just .50 more. It is so good.

Review from Jenny S.
i've been wanting to "splurge" on the $2.50 falafel sandwich here for the LONGEST time!!! & when i finally had it, the meal fell FLAT
the sandwich had WAY too many overpowering onions.. the falafels had a WONDERFUL CRUNCHY CRUST.. BUT the flavor just wasn't there.....which could have been the onions or the mass of white sauce swimming in my sandwich
I wasn't a fan of the white sauce at Mamoun's
the sandwich was kind of lacking in falafel, but for $2.50 its still a STEAL! however, if you want a falafel sandwich packed with tasty falafel go to Murray's Falafel on 1st ave
NOTE: mamoun's takes CASH ONLY & there's maybe 3 tables inside!Listed in: NY LATE NIGHT DRUNCHIES…

Review from Robin K.
The falafel and tabbouleh pita sandwiches are tasty and inexpensive, though I was (admittedly) sad when they raised the price 50c. Cheep's is only $2 and Tahini is $5 (3.81 with student discount, hellz ya!) and the quality of these 3 is in accordance with price...
Every time I order, I ask for "only a little bit of tahini" and they think I say "a lot of tahini" or something, because they dump it on. Meh. -

Great prices and delicious food. Been here twice and have had the lamb wrap. I've also had a side of falafel which were tasty and moist as well. Didn't like the fact that there was only one bottle of hot sauce in the restaurant, so I bought my own bottle! Seating is very limited as well. Would definitely return here when I come back to NYC!

Manhattan, NY
The meat sandwiches are bit pricier than I'd like but overall it's very cheap and quite appetizing. The fact that I come back even though I know this stuff isn't good for you says something. Everything is very flavorful and they make the food pretty fast. Took my family here once and everyone loved it, even my dad! Took a group of students here once and they loved it as well. The meat loves were pleasantly surprised at how good the vegetarian options were. Not the best place for a fancy date, but definitely worth stopping by and very convenient. Sometimes I just stop by for 3 falafel balls on the go--just $1, I think. YUM!

Review from Cliff K.
The lamb shawarma is a mouth-gasm.
Lamb, lettuce, tomato, onions, and a sweet sweet tahini sauce. All in a piece of freakin pita bread. PITA BREAD! Pita bread is seriously underrated man. It's like TV actors. They're better than you think!
The place is in St. Marks area, which already makes it a gem. Then given the fact that it's cheap (5 bucks?!) you're already sold. And then finally, you gotta walk downstairs to enter. DOWNSTAIRS?? that's right. downstairs. hipster? hell yeah.
The hot sauce is damn amazing too. It's burning fire in sauce form. SO GOOD. The only problem I have with this damn place, is that it only has one bottle of hot sauce that everyone has to share. I mean come on, are you seriously not going to leave more bottles out? 15 people can't share 1 bottle of hot sauce!!! it's just not possible!!!
But go to Mamoun's man. It's delicious, it's awesome, it's underrated. If you're down for that halal taste, you'll be down with Mamouns.Listed in: Welcome to NYC! Here's the…, Weaving through St. Marks

New York, NY
Falafel is a stellar bet. Three amazing pieces with tahini sauce for $1. Or you can get the sandwich for just $2.50. It's not meant to fill you up, but in terms of taste, the falafel beats Cheep's.
Cheep's has more toppings, puts more falafel, leaves you full in $2. How can you F with that? I come to Mamoun's for the falafel side order and the shawarma sandwich. This past time, the lamb shawarma sandwich was lacking in some flavor. I'm not sure if they discontinued the use of sauce/tahini in it? I was disappointed this time, because every other time it was off the chain.
Good prices, excellent food overall, and still the spot. I think I'll try Cheep's for shawarma. Why not?! They are on the come up. -
Review from Chris H.
Very good falafel place with great hot sauce. Falafel is $2.50. Down the street from Cheeps and while Cheep's falafel is bigger and has more toppings and is cheaper, Mamoun's probably tastes better.
Not a ton of seating. -

Mamouns !!! I could eat here atleast once a week... I always eat the falafel sandwich here n their Hotsauce is too die for .. BERRY BERRY spicy .... -1 star they used to offer free cups of water and now they don't ... I hate changes.... also they have LTD seating which can be an issue at times but if you have patience you will find seating as the turn around here is pretty good...

Um, is this real life? $2.50 for a falafel? And only $1 for delicious mango juice? It certainly can't be NYC, with prices like that, right? I am amazed. Mamoun is a New York City gem, and a staple for anyone looking for speedy, delicious food at the best price in the city. Five stars. Keep up the good work!

Ah, what can I say that hasn't yet been said. . .
I was walking through the East Village on a trip to the City a couple of years ago, very hungry and in search of something that was filling and easy on the wallet. By chance, I happened to be on St. Marks and some construction of some sort sent me to the sidewalk on the other side of the street. Lo and behold, there was Mamoun's waiting for me -- a place known to many a-New Yorker, but as unknown as anything to me.
As a vegetarian, I crave falafels like most red-blooded Americans crave cheeseburgers. Ah, the the way the nuttiness of the tahini rests atop the warm little fritters of chickpea goodness. The falalfels at Mamoun are as pleasing to the palette as any I've ever had. I also love that I can order a falafel and a water, pay $4 and then be seated at one of their three tables all in just over a minute. (Lines can be kind of long sometimes, though.) Their hot sauce -- which is very hot -- is also fantastic, though use sparingly. -

I grew up right outside of New Haven, CT and have been eating Mamoun's for years now. This ranks up there among one of my favorite restaurants, and the best part about it? Its cheap ($5.50 for 1 shawerma) and fast (less than 5 min wait).
I think I may have developed somewhat of an addiction to the shawermas. Lately, my room mate and I have found it hard to end a night out without cabbing it to St. Mark's to treat ourselves to a meal at 4am. I've ended up there at least one night (sometimes two in a row) for each of the past few weekends lol.
My order is always the same: 2 lamb shawermas. The meat is a bit tough and fatty for some, but I don't know anyone who has denied how the lamb and tahini (this isn't your 53rd and 6th crap white sauce) come together and create such a flavorful combination. The hot sauce is quite strong, but definitely worth adding (I eat half with and half without it) if you can handle heat. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a shot, I promise you won't leave unsatisfied.
When I joined Yelp, I told myself I would give the 5 star rating very sparingly, and only to places that really wowed me. These shawermas are 5 star worthy. -

New York, NY
Consistently delicious falafel and shawarma, made to order immediatey (the line moves fast!), and about $2.50 a pop. What's not to like? The quality isn't as great as taim but it's equally delicious in a greasier way. It also has more seating than taim (which isn't saying much, considering both of these place are tiny!) The hot sauce is KILLER - use sparingly!

Review from Sydney B.
Mamoun's has been around for decades and has another location in the West Village because they crank out stellar felafel and other Middle Eastern treats night and day. I'm a fan of the vegetarian combos (a splurge at $3 to $3.50 when the straight up felafel costs just $2.50).
A great break from another slice of late night pizza, and they'll hand you your sandwich before you even have time to put away your wallet.
If it's crowded and you're waiting on line, check out the vintage reviews posted on the walls, dating back to the 1970s.
If you're a fan of hot sauce, be sure to get a squirt, but be careful--it's powerful!Listed in: Veggie Faves
