Yeah, I'm a uber fan of this place. For one thing, how could you go wrong with a venue that is located in the Plaza? Before or after the show you have a plethora of options to go get a bite to eat or a quick drink. Parking actually isn't too bad either. I easily found something off the street, but later learned of the parking lot. Fail on my part for not thoroughly reading the Yelp reviews.
My first visit to the Lyric was to see Triangle. When I walked in, I was really impressed. The hallway and lobby area looks ultra modern with it's sleek design. It really gives off a clean space type vibe. The theater itself is smallish with a slight slope for stadium seating. Many of the actors used microphones, but I think the acoustics in the building would have worked without them.
If you like watching plays in an intimate setting, you'll like Lyric.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Judy H.Oklahoma City, OK08Jul 8, 2023Updated review
The Sound of Music Lyric performance was superb! We are longtime season subscribers to OKC Broadway and the Lyric. I must admit, I wasn't very excited to see the Sound of Music again for the fifth or sixth time. The talent was excellent! The children were perfect!Seeing and hearing nuns file in down every aisle of the Civic Center was thrilling! The Nazi guards standing on the floor within reach, Nazi flags hanging from the box seats, along with the music certainly put fear in my heart! This production of The Sound of Music was equal maybe better than any Broadway I've ever seen! By the finale I was in tears!

It was a funny, heartfelt lovely production done with style! We are season subscribers to both the Lyric and Broadway. I can honestly say that the performances done by Lyric are at least equal to and sometimes surpass those of Broadway. We have amazing local talent in
the Oklahoma City area. Thank you Lyric for all of your hard work. JH - 1124781364Nov 9, 2019
Lyric Theatre is an awesome place to see a play/musical. It is such an intimate setting, and there is not a bad seat in the house. Today we saw Mary Poppins, which was put on by the Thelma Gaylord Academy. The actors were young adults and children, and they did a phenomenal job! Such talent made me proud of their accomplishments at such young ages.
I have also seen A Christmas Carol at Lyric, and it was fantastic. This is a production they do year after year, and it is popular for a reason. I look forward to taking my family to see it again.
My only slight complaint is that the theater was very cold, but other than that, it was just perfect!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Julie S.Oklahoma City, OK211916424803Feb 4, 2020
We love Lyric so much, and although there are two places to catch Lyric in OKC, this review is for Lyric at the Plaza, my favorite and by far the most intimate venue to see a show of this caliber.
I think the thing I love most about Lyric is that we have Lyric moving in and anchoring Plaza to thank for the Plaza District we know and love today. Beyond that, it is such an important part of the fabric of our community and city. Finally, for many people, it one of their first experiences with live theatrical performance, or any kind of cultural experience.
We brought our four year old here for the first time a few weeks ago to see The Cat in the Hat. She loved it, we loved it, and it was just so fun to share that experience with her. The theatre, though historic and charming on the outside, is modern on the inside, with an indoor box office, a bar, nice restrooms. Once inside the actual theatre, you'll find comfortable seats, good lighting, a nice black box stage, and an overall great setup.
When you leave, you'll find yourself energized, and deposited just steps from some of the best food, drinks and desserts in the city, and definitely the best people watching. If you haven't been yet, their 2020 season has just been announced and it is going to be a great group of shows.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - LaDonna G.Oklahoma City, OK5271222131Dec 18, 2019
Review #75
Location: The Lyric Theatre is located in Plaza District Off NW 16th Street, on the north side.
Info: The company performs in this smaller theatre in Plaza for many plays and shows; but also perform in other theatres in OKC, like the Civic Center for larger productions.
The Lyric Theatre has three rows of seating, to the right, center and left of the stage on one floor. The Theatre is small and cozy and perfect for smaller productions. The only issue is the small bathrooms. If I remember, there are only three or four stalls in the women's restroom, so the line is long during intermission and after the shows. They have an area after the ticket booth to buy drinks and another area to purchase souvenirs.
Parking: The Plaza District parking, as anyone who loves the Plaza like I do knows, it can be difficult to find parking at peek times. Luckily, the Theatre has reserved parking across the street on show days. You have to show your tickets to the parking lot monitor; or if they're in will call for pickup like mine were, just let them know you're going directly to the Theatre once you park. They can see if you do this or not. I went in to will call and got my tickets. I then came out to see if my mom had arrived. The lot was already full when she arrived, so she had to use the furthest lot for reserved parking near N Indiana Ave after Bad Granny's Bazaar west of Lyric. It's across from Empire Slice House.
My Experience: Back in March this year, I put in for free tickets through Yelp to the play, "Bright Star," being performed at the Plaza location in April. I actually won two free tickets and was so excited as this was the first time I'd ever won anything for free.
The show I won tickets for was performed on Sun, 7 April, starting at 2pm. I took my mom and we got to sit close to the front left of the stage. The musical/play "Bright Star" was well produced and the cast really had the audience captivated during the entire show. Many of us had tears during sad and even happy parts of the play, because we were so engrossed in the storyline. The musical was written by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell.
Then in July I saw Yelp giving free tickets to the musical "Titanic." I put in for these as well and won again. This musical was held in the larger Civic Center. This time I took a friend who loves the arts as much as I do. We got to go on Tuesday, 23 July at 730pm. The storyline wasn't like the latest movie, as some people were expecting; but my friend and I enjoyed the musical anyway. It focused on more characters and a real life take of the event. I'll describe the Civic Center building in a separate review.
I'm so excited and happy The Lyric Theatre gives a few free tickets to Yelp for people to attend and experience some of their productions. Thank you Lyric Theatre and Yelp for giving me the privilege to attend two of these incredible productions. My mom, friend and I immensely enjoyed them.

Extra: Lyric Theatre Should Make Headlines!
My husband and I went to see "Newsies" this evening. It was a production by the Lyric Theatre at the OKC Civic Center. We were looking forward to a night out and were glad to try a Lyric production. We've heard of them for years, but have never gone to an actual performance. We expected it would be an entertaining evening.
What we didn't expect was the level of Lyric Theatre entertainment; we were blown away by the talent on the stage. The dances and singing were top quality and the orchestra was excellent. The lines and songs flowed seamlessly, creating a well crafted storyline.
For many years, we had season tickets at the Civic Center for the Off Broadway musicals, and we've traveled multiple times to NewYork for Broadway plays/musicals/ballets. This was clearly in the same category as the Off Broadway series.
Newsie Note: The musical regarded unions, poor working class vs. greedy, wealthy businessmen, prison for profits, unfair child labor, and bullies at the turn of the 20th century.
We will be supporting the Lyric Theatre by attending more productions in the future. Oklahomans should be very proud!Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - 1745831494Dec 2, 2019
My mom and I had the honor to receive tickets from Yelp to A Christmas Carol. We absolutely loved our experience! The theater itself had a homey atmosphere and there are no bad seats! The set was exquisite and the sound and light effects made for a great experience. The acting was amazing and the actors even interacted with the audience at various parts of the play which we enjoyed. They have a cute concession stand where they served snacks and drinks (including some delicious adult Christmas drinks). We received brochures with future show dates and we plan to return and enjoy another night at the Lyric! Thank you Yelp for the tickets, it was a wonderful evening!

After attending Lyric Theatre on April 7th for a Yelp event, I realized I need to get out and explore Oklahoma a bit more. I've been in this area a few times to check out some of the food options, but I've never noticed Lyric Theatre as it's a bit hidden away among all the hipster food spots.
Just being completely honest, I wasn't expecting anything amazing. I walked in, got my tickets, and took a seat waiting for an average show, decent acting, OK singing, etc. Man, I was sure blown away.
It's a small theatre, but even from the beginning, I was welcomed with a big smile by the guy in the booth where my friend and I were supposed to check-in. We then took a seat and took in everything before the show started. As previously stated, it's a small theatre probably only fitting about 200-250 people with a fairly small stage. We were told to check-in 30 minutes before the show so we just took our seats and talked while watching the band practice/tune/do last minute checks. They also had shirts, snacks, and some other items for sale in the lobby.
We got to watch "Bright Star" and I didn't know much about the show as there wasn't much information about the plot, but wow, it was great. It was about 2 hours (with intermission) but none of it really dragged other than 1 or 2 parts. The sound quality was great, you could hear all the instruments (even the low bass notes of the cello), and every line from the actors/actresses was super clear.
The band was great and I don't think they got as much recognition as they deserved. They really set the scenes with the perfectly timed pieces and I could listen to them for hours. All of the acting was amazing with great singing, dancing, comic relief, and watery eyes during sad/dramatic scenes.
My only complaint is how cold it was. It's probably kept that way so everybody on stage isn't dripping in sweat, but like most movies, I would dress in layers.
Tickets are a little bit expensive, but with the amount of dedication and practice that goes into these shows, I think they're worth it. I will definitely be back and I recommend you check Lyric out.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nicole P.Central Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City, OK222338Feb 7, 2020
We went to see 'The Cat in the Hat' and had a great first experience with Lyric Theater. My boys enjoyed it so much that they requested to go back and see something else real soon. Tickets recommended to be there at least 30 minutes early so we got there 40 minutes early just in case and beat everyone else there but that made for a long wait that I'm not sure was actually necessary for this kind of show if you have advanced tickets.
The only down side though to the show was being in the middle, 4 rows from the front, left my kids feeling a little left out from the bubbles, characters chatting with them and thing high fives. I would recommend if you are getting tickets for interactive shows to be in row seats near the front.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
