I love the Plaza District but had never been to Lyric Theater until I won a ticket from Yelp for a Sunday matinee performance of "Murder for Two". Thanks Yelp & Julie - I thoroughly enjoyed it! The intimate size of the theater was perfect for this 2 man touring production. Just before the show started, since the theater wasn't full, we were told to move down and around to better seats. They said the performers would appreciate having the audience close together. I took the opportunity to move down and more to the center even though there really are no bad seats in the house.
It was a warm spring day outside but fortunately I came prepared for the inside too. I brought a jacket which I did need to put on because the air conditioning was a little to chilly for me. I expect that of all theaters - movie & live acting. One thing I did not expect was that I was not supposed to take a picture of the stage. I took a picture of the stage setting before the show starting and was in the process of tweeting about it when a gentleman asked if that was a picture of the stage I was going to send. I said it was & he kindly informed me that photographs of the stage were forbidden and requested that I delete my picture. I did delete it from my tweet before I sent it. He did not know that I had already posted the picture on Yelp.
I had to put my phone up as the show was starting. The next 95 minutes (no intermission) were very entertaining. I am glad I finally made it to Lyric Theater & look forward to returning in the future. After the show, I stopped in the lobby so that I could delete my forbidden photo from Yelp. I certainly don't want to get me, Julie or Yelp blacklisted at Lyric!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nicole P.Central Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City, OK222338Feb 7, 2020
We went to see 'The Cat in the Hat' and had a great first experience with Lyric Theater. My boys enjoyed it so much that they requested to go back and see something else real soon. Tickets recommended to be there at least 30 minutes early so we got there 40 minutes early just in case and beat everyone else there but that made for a long wait that I'm not sure was actually necessary for this kind of show if you have advanced tickets.
The only down side though to the show was being in the middle, 4 rows from the front, left my kids feeling a little left out from the bubbles, characters chatting with them and thing high fives. I would recommend if you are getting tickets for interactive shows to be in row seats near the front.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Casie P.Oklahoma City, OK129207836Dec 4, 2017
Listen, Linda... Honey,
You need to get online and look for tickets to the Lyric Theater for the performance of, The Christmas Carol. I was fortunate enough to be gifted tickets for this show and HOLY HOLLY it was fantastic!
I've never been to Lyric before. I was pleasantly surprised, as was my friend I went with. They had it decorated for Christmas and it was beautiful. Every person we encountered that was working, was very kind and hospitable. The theater at itself was small enough that there were no bad seats but large enough to where you weren't sitting on top of each other.
The cast was amazing! The accents, the costumes, the singing, everything was on point. Is it weird that I want to have some of those dresses to wear around? They were so pretty. The show was funny as well touching. There were times I laughed and then a few seconds later, I was tearing up. The Spirit of Christmas past must have had some killer abs and glutes because she was floating in the air poised for a hot minute or twenty. Maybe, they should open up a workout class and give Orange Theory a run for their money... Scrooge was fantastic!! Kudos to him. He can make a mean grump loveable. Like, he put the CGI version of Jim Carrey to shame. So grab your fa-la-las and get down to the Lyric. This place is definitely worth it!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Feb 14, 2015
The theatuh! Hmm, quite right, old chap.
Lyric Theater, oops sorry, I meant Lyric "Theatre" (because we fancy up in this joint) offers something that the Civic Center does not. The Civic Center productions are bigger, more elaborate, and award winning productions. But it can also feel a little stifling at times. This is not a concern at Lyric Theatre. In some ways, I think I like the Lyric Theatre more than the Civic Center. And that's saying something because I really like the Civic Center. I've seen maybe five (six?) shows over the last couple years, and I have enjoyed every single production (two or three of shows were gifts from our illustrious CM, so thank you to Julie "PoSco" and YelpOKC for the hook-ups).
The sets aren't particularly impressive, and there are limitations to the smaller stage and productions, but there's also personal touch to the Lyric Theatre that is occasionally lacking with bigger venues. When you get the actors or actresses walking right past you, or even occasionally interacting with you while in character; that's something I've yet to experience at the Civic Center. Indubitably, my dear sir. Or madam.
Prices are reasonable. $40-55 for most shows. $25 for matinee shows. $119 for season tickets, which guarantees you three shows. If you want to catch the really enjoyable rendition of "A Christmas Carol" it's an add-on price or something. However, considering most shows are $40, $119 for season tickets doesn't seem like much of a steal.
Also... Empire Slice right across the street! Dinner and a show in the Plaza District? That's pretty much a guaranteed second date. Well, guaranteed if you're not a boring person, I guess...Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Oct 1, 2018
I've been a theater geek for as long as I can remember and my commitment to theater has accompanied me to many major cities (including a decade in NYC, regularly attending on and off (and off, off) Broadway shows). In my opinion, the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma measures up to other venues I've visited beautifully. Lyric Theater can best be described as comfortable and getting tickets for a show here essentially guarantees a comfortable theater-going experience. There's plenty of good nearby parking. The seats are in great condition, roomy, and ergonomically friendly. The theater is spotlessly clean (your shoes will not be sticking to this floor). The acoustics at the Lyric Theater are perfect - spot on. The show we saw wasn't too loud and it wasn't too quiet...you won't leave with ringing ears and a headache. In fact, I would guess that every seat in the house is a good seat (both from an audio and visual standpoint). The theater has a quaint little outdoor area which I thought was a nice touch for some fresh air during intermission without actually having to exit the building. Restrooms were clean and well appointed and there's a nice little concession area in the lobby that was serving up a tasty (and strong) cocktail of vodka, elder flower liquor mixed with a variety of juices. Staff are friendly, helpful, and genuinely welcoming. Yesterday we saw one of the inaugural productions of When We're Gone https://lyrictheatreokc.com/shows/when-were-gone/ and we were totally blown away by it. A National Alliance for Musical Theatre award winner, When We're Gone is a rock opera laden with metaphor and existential angst. An incredibly talented cast pour their hearts into this emotionally provocative piece about life, death, and the meaning of all the stuff in between. Musical scores were fantastic (think Blink 182 + Misfits + Ramones) and the set was incredibly atmospheric...you'll feel like you're right there with the characters as they attempt to cope with the Black Death in 1300's London. It's dark, hazy, spooky, and oh so punk rock. A HUGE thank you to OKC Yelp Elite, the incredible Julie Porter Scott, and Lyric Theater of Oklahoma for a truly memorable experience!
