Q:
Will there be.a Thanksgiving menu on Nov 24, 2022?
A:
That is a question that you need to ask the restaurant. I am a diner like yourself and really do not know their plans for Thanksgiving.

Before heading into the museum on a late rainy afternoon, we decided to grab some coffee first. Sat at the bar which is set to the side and nicely set away from the rest of the restaurant.
Service was great - coffee was good.
Atmosphere was really nice.
Since it was near closing time, not a lot of activity around us but enough people coming & going that made the place feel great.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 169193153Feb 20, 2024
I want to love this place with the local charm and fares. But unfortunately it's hard to give it too much credit as everything was just .. ok.
The crab cake was pretty good but nothing too exciting.
We also had the tenderloin which gave me food poisoning.
But the highlight of the meal was actually the bread pudding.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 12, 2023
Gertrude's is the upscale restaurant in the Baltimore Museum of Art.

The Baltimore Museum of Art gets about 38 stars.
For a small museum playing catch-up with the big city majors,
It is amazing.
The contemporary exhibits are incredibly well chosen with fantastic selections of artists and works.
The older galleries have to live with what was not picked up first by places like the Met in New York.
For some hard to understand reason, Baltimore scored a massive number of Matisses.
But, Matisse aside, the average older gallery has about two amazing pieces among a ho hum rest.
But those two amazing pieces ...

That said, Yelp is not about porcelain boddhisattvas.
Yelp is about the food.
Gertrude's is good eating.
It is a nice room.
The menu is small, and heavy on seafood and sandwiches.
Make that elegant seafood and upscale sandwiches.
They do not inflate the prices because you are in a museum.
The pricing is much appreciated by Samuel C.
Add the charm of the setting, and this is a great place to be.
I was with amazing company discussing deep philosophical issues.
So my attention to the food was probably less than I would have liked for a Yelp review.
But I loved everything I had ...
Double that for dessert.

And how can you not like your salmon,
When back in the gallery, you have just seen the contemporary mandala of your dreams?Helpful 5Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0 - Oct 1, 2023Updated review
We are regular customers to this restaurant and always recommend friends there. I provided 5 stars in previous reviews.
This trip was a total disappointment with inattentive waiter. Food and ambiance are perfect. We waited for a long time before he showed up to take orders. Then he disappeared and waited for a long time to get refill of ice tea. I ended up requested another waiter attending other nearby tables who provided refill. We had to go to concierge to get check. It is a shame as we were there to celebrate my birthday. I was feeling jealous that the next table even had a dessert with lighted candle while we never have an opportunity to request for anything due to the subpar service. It would be a while before we would return.Helpful 0Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 18, 2022Previous reviewPerfect dining experience, delicious food, beautiful Christmas decorations and live music.
Aug 27, 2022Previous reviewCame here on a Friday evening to celebrate anniversary and birthday. Everything were delicious from crab cake, salmon entrees, drinks, salad, fried chicken platter and complimentary pastries to start the meal.

We were looking for a good place to celebrate and the reviews said Gertrude's was nice and they were right. good ambiance in the art museum and excellent food.
we started with the mediterranean platter and then ordered the gertie's crab cake with fries, the powerhouse sandwich with fruit, lamb meatballs and hushpuppies. standouts were the crab cakes, the fruit and the lamb meatballs. each dish was good in terms of flavor, quantity and quality,
overall great experience in terms of food and atmosphereHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 25, 2024
I really used to love this place but unfortunately it has gone downhill. Their menu has expanded but the service is really lacking. Not only was the service extremely slow, but I had to get up and ask for someone to come to our table and was made to feel like a huge inconvenience for even doing so. Our server was also not apologetic at all, spilled a drink on one of our entrees and didn't even acknowledge it, and continued to show poor service throughout the evening. The food was just OK as others have already said. There are much better places in the area so please do not waste your money here unless you want to pay for horrendous, rude service. I won't be coming back here anymore.

When Gertrude's was suggested as a lunch location when we were visiting Baltimore, my first guess was that the restaurant at the BMA would be a nice spot where well-off museum visitors could enjoy a meal with their friends. Yup. It was all that and more.
The menu turned out to be the Chesapeake Bay sampler that I was hoping to find - multiple types of crab cakes, zucchini based non-crab cakes, oysters, salmon, classic sandwiches, all kinds of upscale comfort food. The housemade sodas were both refreshing and added to the visual appeal of everything on the table.
Service was quick and attentive - undecided diners were offered much more information than the menu provided about the different ways to experience crab cakes, and a dropped fork had a replacement in place before it could be picked up off the floor. Multiple runners made sure everyone at our table received our meals while they were hot.
The museum is a must-see for a visit to Baltimore, and general museum admission is free, so you don't really need to be rich to enjoy world class art and the white tablecloth experience at Gertrude's.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 26, 2023Updated review
We were excited to see the announcement that John Shields and Gertrude's would be celebrating their 25th Anniversary with a Community Night to remember. They would be donating 25% of each dining check to support his nonprofit, Our Common Table. We were so honored to have attended their 20th Anniversary, so we immediately signed up for this October 25 event. We had friends that flew in from Portsmouth, New Hampshire for the 20th and flew in again for the 25th Anniversary dinner. We requested our favorite table, and we were pleased that it was ready and waiting for when we arrived.
The restaurant provided live music, special cocktails, appetizers, dinner, and dessert selections. Eric, our server, took excellent care of us. My husband and I started by splitting a large Spinach salad. It had crisp spinach leaves, applewood smoked bacon, mushrooms, red onion, and goat cheese dressed with a warm, aged sherry vinaigrette. For our entrees, we chose the Back Creek Inn Crab Quiche, which was loaded with lump crabmeat, eggs, Swiss cheese, red onion, and fresh herbs served with a garden salad; and "I Can't Believe It's Not Crab" Cakes, which were 2 nice-sized zucchini cakes with crab cake spices, orange-chipotle sauce, tangy Udon noodles, and garlic spinach. We both were thrilled with our choice. Our friends, not being local to Baltimore, had to have the Senator Barb's Crab Cake with large asparagus and sliced grilled potatoes with tartar sauce. John Shields, being the gracious host, came over to chat with us - we were as delighted to see him as he was to see us. We look forward to many more years dining at Gertrude's. What a fun and delicious evening we had!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jul 23, 2022Previous reviewWe arrived early for our 6:30 pm reservation, and we were warmly greeted by Jin. You know how great minds work alike. There was another couple who had requested the same table as we did. They graciously let us have the table, since we had made the reservation with the request first. Thus, we were able to have the table we requested.
Our server, Mason, did the best he could - it appeared that the restaurant was not fully staffed. (We can appreciate how difficult it is now.) Our friends arrived, and they ordered their drinks. We ordered our dinners and settled back to enjoy our evening. The restaurant always starts you off with a piece of focaccia bread and a piece of corn bread served with butter - just yummy. For our appetizers, we tried the Watermelon Gazpacho (which was so-so), the Grilled Peach & Arugula Salad (very fresh salad with Black Rock Orchard peaches, chèvre cheese, blueberries, curried pecans, and smoked honey vinaigrette dressing) and two orders of the Chesapeake Deviled Eggs (three eggs with lump crab, Old Bay & chives). We were off to a good start!
For our main courses, we enjoyed two Miss Alice's Tilghman Island Platters, which included a Boardwalk Crab Cake, Maryland Pan-Fried Chicken leg and thigh, country potato salad, slow-braised collard greens with bacon, and a buttermilk biscuit; and two Grilled Gulf Shrimp & Grits - a generous portion of cheesy stone-ground grits, blistered heirloom cherry tomatoes, and 5 shrimp in a fire-roasted, sweet corn coulis. My husband and I did the wine pairing, which we felt was very reasonable - 3 drinks for $15.00 each. For our dessert, we all ordered the same thing - the Baltimore Peach Upside-Down Cake with vanilla bean ice cream. Oh my, we were delighted with everything. Thank you for a wonderful Restaurant Week dinner!Jul 31, 2021Previous reviewWe were so looking forward to a great evening at Gertrude's. We were warmly greeted when we arrived and shown to the table we had requested when we made our reservation. Pilar, our server, came right over and asked if we wanted to order drinks. We wanted a few minutes to look over the menu, which she said was fine. We all decided to do the Restaurant Week menu with the wine pairings. They immediately brought over their famous corn roll and hot muffin. We were off to good start. For our appetizer, we had two Grilled Peach and Arugula salads paired with Schumann Nagler Reisling and one Chesapeake Deviled Eggs paired with Tiamo Pinot Grigio. We all liked our appetizers especially the deviled eggs - they were really different and delicious.
All three of us thought the Miss Alice's Tilghman Island Platter paired with Antech Chardonnay sounded the best of the entrees. I do not care for Chardonnay, so Pilar very kindly switched me to a Pinot Grigio. This is where things started to go downhill. Maybe there was not enough staff to attend properly to the dining guests needs? The fried chicken and crab cake were overdone, Ed's Country Potato Salad had green, red and yellow peppers in it (which my husband cannot eat), the slow-braised green beans had an over-powering spice. The buttermilk biscuit was definitely not light and flaky.
We had a hard time getting the attention of our server after our dinners were served. Our water glasses went unfilled until we caught her attention. The best part of the meal for my husband and I was the Baltimore Peach Upside Down Cake with vanilla ice cream paired with Quady Winery "Essencia" Orange Muscat. It was loaded with flavor and just delicious. Our friend was served the wine pairing of Graham's Fine Tawny Port to go with Gertrude's Candy Bar. However she was very disappointed when Pilar told her that they no longer had the Gertrude's Candy Bar left. She settled for some chocolate ice cream. We all felt that the service and the food were not up to Gertrude's standards.Oct 3, 2018Previous reviewWhen we got the invitation for Crabcakes, Heartaches, and New Beginning, we were very excited and signed up immediately. This event was to celebrate John Shield and his 20 year anniversary of Gertrude's Restaurant at the BMA. Our friend from New Hampshire also purchased a ticket and flew in to BWI that afternoon. She just loves John Shield and Gertrude's since we introduced her to this restaurant several years ago. She was delighted to have a few minutes with John before the event started.
Unfortunately, the evening did not turn out as well as they thought they had planned. They oversold the event, which meant that everyone could not be in the auditorium for the program. They did think to live stream the program into the restaurant, but the television reception was spotty, the lighting too dark and we could not hear the speakers which was a shame for all who attended and who were in the restaurant dining room. I tried to watch it on their Facebook page the following morning, but the lighting was bad as was the sound.
We were lucky that we found a table in the dining room and stayed there. They did offer a complimentary free bar. Sheri and the rest of the bar staff took excellent care of us. There was no shortage of drinks for everyone!
When the program ended in the auditorium, the restaurant and outside terrace were overrun by guests. There was a list on each table of 9 hors d'oeuvres that were to be passed. We were able to sample only the Salmon BLT and the Oyster Banh Mi. (It appeared to be difficult for the servers to be able to pass the hors d'oeuvres because of the crowds.) The buffet was supposed to highlight 6 new dishes that will be offered in the restaurant. We were able to go thru the buffet line near the beginning of the line and sample 3 of the 6 new items, as they had run out of some. We had the Crabby Poutine, Waffled Chicken Tenders, and Roasted Brussel Sprouts - all delicious. . We are glad that we came to celebrate with John and we are thrilled about all that he has accomplished. He has worked so hard. He is genuinely just a really nice person, and this is a great restaurant for all occasions!Dec 14, 2016Previous reviewTwo reviews in one!
We had made a reservation for dinner at Gertrude's for Tuesday with Gertie. It was a cold and rainy night. It would have been easier to just stay home, but we did not. We were delighted and enthused when we stepped into the restaurant. It was elegantly decorated for the Christmas holiday. The entire dining room sparkled. What was truly enchanting were the townhouses constructed and individually decorated by the staff. They are having a contest to pick the best one. The townhouses really captured the spirit of Baltimore and beyond. Brie, our server, came over right away and took our drink order. We ordered a bottle of Tiamo Pinot Grigio ($20). She was a delight - very engaging and attentive. John Shields, the owner and chef, is a real hands-on person. We had the opportunity to have a nice chat with him. On Tuesdays with Gertie, they offer specially priced meals at $15.00. I know what you are thinking, they just the portion size down - they do not. My husband enjoyed the Seafood Gumbo - shrimp, fish, lump crab, mussels and andouille sausage served over rice. I was delighted to see Pan-Seared Skate Wing on the menu. I knew the fish would be fresh and perfectly prepared. It was that and more. They served me a very large Skate portion that was topped with fried caper Beurre blanc over roasted garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetable mélange. It was all so good.
Last night we returned to Gertrude's. Our friend came from Portsmouth, NH and always requests to go to Tuesday with Gertie. There were 5 in our party. We had a blast. They also were enchanted with the townhouses. Our server, Jay, quietly looked after us. We all decided to do the 3 course meal. We enjoyed their Fried Chicken, 2 Flank Steaks, Salmon and Parmesan-encrusted Cod. The food was beautifully prepared and presented. Desserts were over the top. Our thanks to John and his staff for providing us with a delightful evening.Aug 3, 2016Previous reviewLast night we went to Gertrude's for Tuesdays with Gertie. We admire John Shields for honoring his grandmother in this way and treating all of us. Tuesday with Gertie offers a prix fix entrée for $15.00. Wine is offered at $20.00 a bottle. Set in the beautiful BMA Museum, the restaurant always has a lively vibe. Our server, Purna, was friendly and attentive - he really took excellent care of us. The rolls and corn bread were so hot and tasty. They make Maryland Pan-fried Chicken only on Tuesday, so I had to have it. The dish included a breast, thigh, leg and wing accompanied with mashed potatoes, gravy, 2 biscuits and broccoli. It was so much, I have lunch for today. The other meals enjoyed were the Salmon alla Bella with asparagus and wild rice pilaf, and 2 orders of the Grilled Jumbo Shrimp and Crab - Gulf shrimp & Clayton's crabmeat wrapped in thinly sliced pancetta and served over local cheddar-Pepper Jack grits, with garlic spinach. Everyone raved about their dishes. We enjoyed a bottle of Vinho Verde (crisp, fresh white wine) and Fourteen Hands Merlot (full bodied red wine). Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.

A stop here is the perfect way to end a trip to the Baltimore Museum of Art. After an afternoon at the museum, we had a reservation to come here for an early dinner and had a lovely time. The ambiance is warm and inviting while being beautifully elegant. The staff members were friendly and helpful. Service was fast but we didn't feel rushed.
The menu offered a variety of Chesapeake classics with a contemporary touch. We were delighted to start off with our own plates of bread. The cornbread had the perfect balance in texture. The lamb meatballs with yogurt sauce paired with caramelized onions and fig into the perfect bite. The dishes we tried were overall good with quality ingredients. We wished the fries had been crispy and for an extra sprinkle of salt over each dish but otherwise were satisfied. We will be back for another pleasant experience, especially when the weather permits outdoor seating and events!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0
