I am one of the original Las Palapas customers going back more than 30 years. It's been quite disappointing to watch this places steady decline over time as it expanded, and then turned into a chain.
I used to crave their Breakfast items, like the chorizo tacos for a late night snack. The wonderful spicy textured sausage of yesterday-year was sadly long ago replaced with something resembling sweet catchup and eggs. But there aren't that many places to go in S.A. for a late night Tex-Mex treat, so on occasion I continue to pay visit to this restaraunt chain, and. I still recommend the macho burrito - it's not as macho as it used to be but, still very tasty.
Lately I've been really annoyed with the service at the Blanco Road location, I feel this location is poorly managed at late night. Several times when they weren't even that busy, I waited 10 to 15 minutes to get a server, and waited equally long to close out my check. So I thought I would give Stone Oak a try. It is a little farther for me,but I've always found the food and service they're better than most of the other locations ( although I hadn't been to the Stone Oak for two or three years).
Well, I must say it was a good choice as far as the service. They were much more attentive in seating, serving, and getting me out of there. However, I found the food very disappointing. I ordered 3 different tacos: bean and cheese, chicken and guac, and a carne guisada. All tacos came liuke warm which is a major turn off for me especially when it comes to Mexican food. They were clearly served up from a warming tray that wasn't even doing a good job of warming, and the cold tortillas the fillings were wrapped in, did nothing to help the situation. Here, Blanco Road has the edge. I normally would've sent it back, but I was tired and anxious to get home. I asked for my ice tea in a to-go cup (Blanco Road usually volunteers a refill to-go) and I found it odd that unlike Blanco, Rd the To-Go cup was half the size. And finally, I found the green sauce at this location different than Blanco, and quite disappointing in flavor-it didn't even look appetizing.
Overall I give them a 3 (clearly not for the food), and will probably give this location one more chance, but if they blow it again, this chain will likely drop off my late night list for good, in favor of Los Robertos.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nonna S.TX, TX931Oct 11, 2023
Super super slow service. During lunch when ppl have limited time. Maybe short staffed therefore I will still go back.

We were in the mood for Mexican food for lunch while out and about and this was close. Hadn't been here in a while. They have never disappointed. The only issue I take is their salsa, it's pretty mild, almost bland. As a native to San Antonio, salsa and chips is a staple, don't mess with my chips and salsa and make it chunky please. Everything else was good as usual.
One thing to know if you plan to come, the highway (US 281) is under construction and they have reduced the amount of parking that had been available. It can be a challenge to find a spot, we actually parked in the neighboring lot.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Sep 26, 2014Previous reviewHave been a customer of Las Palapas off and on over the years. Had not been to this one since they opened and then only once. We came for the San Antonio specialty, Puffy Tacos. We got our with beef. These are very good Puffy Tacos. The shell gets pretty soggy by the time you are half way through and you have to finish with a fork. the wife just wraps the whole taco in a flour tortilla and eats it that way. We are huge fans of the Puffy, and these are pretty good. We had great service, we had come in just after the lunch rush and there was almost no wait for our food and it was very hot.

My husband and I have visited many times for breakfast before covid and have enjoyed their food and service.
With the covid situation, we've frequently gone through the drive-thru to pick up food. I really love their barbacoa taco. For the most part, it's very moist but there have been a couple of occasions where it's a little on the dry side. My husband has his staple orders: bean taco, chalupa, and puffy taco with a side of pico de gallo and green sauce.
There's a couple of times where the drive-thru line is long and the wait staff comes out to take your order. Definitely helps.
We definitely want to continue to support this business.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Claudia S.San Antonio, TX052107Mar 31, 2020

I'm doing my best to support local restaurants during the current crisis, including Las Palapas, which is by far one of my favorite Mexican restaurants.
I've been a regular customer at the 281 North and loop 1604 location for 10 years, so I ordered the 12 breakfast taco deal this morning.
However I'm very disappointed of 2 things:
1) the lady handing out the orders at curbside this morning was NOT wearing either gloves or a face mask, and she got really close to my window, yikes. I did call the restaurant to express my concern and spoke with a manager, he told me they're not required by law to wear a mask, well, then I'm not going to risk my health or my family's health if Las Palapas is not taking this pandemic seriously and I won't order take out until we go back to normal times.
2) the breakfast tacos this time were very skimpy compared to regular portions, only half full. Is it because it's a 12-taco deal at a discounted price? If that's the reason, than not worth my money, my time and the risk of catching the virus. But if you decided to start making your tacos with less filling, then please start making your tortillas smaller as well. I don't want a taco half-filled with air.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 30, 2020
I wish they had a sports bar room. The Macho Botana Platter is a epic meal for any sports game. A mixture of appetizer finger foods bring joy to your soul. I love the faultas with the bowl of cheese dip. I also requested to add picadillo to it and it lifts it up even more.
If you are hungry. Give it a whirl.
Suggestions- Fajitas are pretty good. Always a good bet.

In the COVKD-19 era many restaurants are doing their best to do their part in keeping customers feeling safe and Las Palapas is certainly exceeding. Everything was spotless. They had the sanitized/in-sanitized pen jars at the front for checking out and all employees were wearing masks!
Now to the food. Best Mexican-style breakfast ever, I love their huevos rancheros and their fresh lemonade. Great location and quick service for quality Mexican food!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Joseph D.Selma, TX13151246Aug 31, 2019
Las Palapas has been in establishment in San Antonio since I moved here over 20 years ago! They always deliver fresh high-quality food at extremely affordable prices. Every one of these restaurants I go to is always clean, has great service and great food. They have been opening more stores lately and I'm happy to report that even with the expansion, they are continuing to serve high-quality food all over San Antonio!
If you have never been to one of these before, you are definitely missing out on great Mexican food. Best of all they're open 24 hours a day, every day except for Sunday which they are closed.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Alexis A.Bowie, MD92233964Jun 3, 2019
In terms of take out, the service was pretty fast. The restaurant has been recently remodeled, and they have a few benches in the front for you to wait for your meal.
Seeing the long line at the neighboring Chick-Fil-A, I came in and ordered a Asada Taco and Norteno Chicken Taco to go. It took about 10 mins. The staff was very helpful, and the tacos were good.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 6, 2019
The remodel is fresh and neat! Our first time inside since its been done.
Just a quick Brunch/lunch today. Irazoqui was our server- GREAT service! Fast and efficient and friendly. THANK YOU!!!
Food was really good! Always ask for the homemade corn tortillas for tacos! They are awesome, thick & tasty!
Update:
Ack! Forgot my debit card in the restaurant and Irazoqui brought it right out to me before I drove away! Thank you!!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 6, 2019
Decent Tex-Mex for the price and ambiance. It took our family of 5 about 15 minutes to get seated even though there was a table available the entire time. Our server was definitely very busy but got our orders quickly and left chips and salsa for our table. I ordered the fajita nachos and they were very good, I like that each tortilla had an individual amount of beef and cheese. My family enjoyed their chicken fajitas and burritos. Food came out pretty fast and everything was fairly clean. For $1.99 they brought dessert for our table. I'm not a fan of their salsas but I'm sure I'll be back again.
