Just an update, the center reached out to us to apologize for what happened and update us on their plans moving forward. They have made the decision to require COVID testing or a required 14-day quarantine for the families that were exposed. They also said that they would be putting together a better safety plan and a parent committee to work alongside in implementing these changes.
I'm happy that they decided to make these changes, to prioritize the safety and health of the children and their families. It can only make them stronger. Better late than never!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 22, 2020Previous reviewLet me start by saying I first visited this school in 2019 after reading the great reviews and hearing from happy parents. We decided to go with Bright Horizons because we felt there was a lack of transparency in addressing certain questions we had. That said, we liked the center and the program on paper, and we were really disappointed that we had to pick BH.
Fast forward to 2020, wherein we decided to enroll because 3 of our friends had their children here. We did the tour again and everyone was very friendly, we had a great conversation about the program, loved the facility as it was very clean and organized. On our second week, one of the teachers in the older class tested positive for COVID-19. I was informed as I picked up my son on a Tuesday afternoon. I was told that the teacher had suspected that she had exposure to a family member over the weekend who exhibited symptoms. Despite this, she came to work on Monday and then informed management after being with the children for one hour. Management of course decided to get her tested ASAP. HOWEVER, they all waited to get her results back on Tuesday to inform parents and get everyone else tested(!)
They clearly didn't take action right away because I only found out on Tuesday AFTERNOON as I picked up my son. I was told they were having early dismissal (at 2pm?) and that they were contacting parents. I asked about what they were planning to do moving forward and was told they would be in touch but did not offer any information about a plan. I was told that my son's teacher had the virus in March and that he was ok - as if this would comfort me to know that their staff are in the habit of getting infected. Not that this is within anyone's control - but in a situation like this, the last thing a parent wants to deduce is that your staff/the people that care for their children have a track record for being less careful about exposure. Also that they are not compliant with the basic course of action - don't show up if you even SUSPECT you have been exposed.
I called one of my mom friends to check if she had heard about what was going on, and she did not know anything. Nobody informed her about the aforementioned "early dismissal." Her son was in there, along with all the kids that were exposed. Granted, they were in a separate class. But they suspected one of their teachers was exposed on MONDAY and they did not do anything, other than get her tested and wait. I would expect a childcare center to shut down IMMEDIATELY and come out with a statement to all parents at the same time in anticipation of a potential "spreader event."
That same evening, I waited for a statement. For anything. And yes, I understand that they were planning to close down the next day and get everyone tested (only their staff). But a thorough daycare would have at least released some sort of statement about the plan of action moving forward. My husband wrote them an email that night, asking why the teacher acted so carelessly in the first place and drilled down on their plans. We didn't hear back. The next day, I sent a text message and was finally given a call back around noon. I asked what the plan was, and they said they would reopen on Monday. The kids in the class that was exposed would not be required to get tested OR quarantine, although half of the class would do so voluntarily. The teacher would be quarantined for 14 days. When I pushed back, they told me that some families in the school feel totally safe coming back because they have already had the virus earlier that year. They then said that they were sorry but he other families "need the care." I was so deeply insulted by this. First of all, it's safe to assume that EVERY family paying to send their kids there NEEDS the care. They clearly had preferential treatment, which was unacceptable. Especially since they chose NOT to prioritize the health and safety of the community.
After that conversation and a few texts back and forth with my other mom friends, I decided to send LAC a text outlining my expectations. I will try to attach a screenshot below. My message stated that it was unfair that the kids and families that were exposed would not be required to at least quarantine. If they couldn't do that then we couldn't trust them with our son. To that, they replied that I was welcome to email Vlad and get a refund. It was that easy.
My other friend called them and had the same conversation, to which they were apparently much more receptive and willing to comply. They later on posted on the app that they would be requiring quarantine and negative test results before resuming school on Monday. I don't understand why that wasn't the first instinct to begin with, and why it took a bunch of moms coming together to pressure them to DO THE RIGHT THING to protect our community.
Needless to say, we pulled out our son and we are never looking back. They were clearly very unprepared for this, and we do not trust them. - Veronica M.Manhattan, NY0139Jan 10, 2018
This school had so much promise. We knew when we enrolled our daughter the facility would be closing and moving downtown. The school was supposed to remain open until the end of August, unfortunately they basically gave up on this center in June.
My daughter was so close to being fully potty trained but then she came back in June and they totally gave up. Also, my daughter had 2 incidents where they said she hurt another child, but NEVER gave me details so I could correct the situation. The incidents always occurred outside in the back of the playground where there are NO teachers. The teachers all sit in a circle and do not seem to move to the back. My daughter has never been aggressive with another child, not saying she is incapable, but without details what is a parent supposed to do?
I hope they do better by the children at their new facility.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rachel W.New York, NY26Mar 6, 2019
The teachers are caring, sweet, and energetic. But the administration is abysmal - they are unprofessional and incompetent, and the CEO even threatened to expel my son over his life-threatening food allergy.

Our daughter attended LAC from the time she was one year old (January 2017) until she was 3.5 years old (March 2020). Over the past 2+ years, we have been happy. The teachers are the real reason we kept our daughter at LAC. They are loving, attentive and fun. Our daughter loves them. I actually was asked to write a positive review of this daycare a while back and I was happy to do so.
However, I am so saddened by how our relationship with this school and the administration has ended. On March 22, LAC closed due to COVID-19. Given the circumstances, they pivoted to twice daily (sometimes three times daily) forty five min sessions of stories, songs, yoga, etc. On March 29, they offered a discounted rate of $1400 per month, reduced from original $2100 per month tuition to continue with this arrangement. We declined to continue, as 1.5-3 hours of virtual sessions (which we had to facilitate with our three year old) were no longer the 6.5 hours of full-time care we had been paying for, and had been promised in our contract. Of course, we did not hold this against the daycare; we understand they are doing their best but this new arrangement was not the original promised arrangement nor did it make sense for us to pay $1400 per month for 1.5-3 hours per day of zoom sessions.
Now, where I am so disappointed is that on top of paying $2100 per month for childcare at LAC, we had paid a security deposit of $2100 to secure our daughter's spot in the daycare, which is to be paid back upon the end of the contract. LAC refuses to refund us our security deposit. We have tried to resolve this with LAC - multiple emails and phone calls, including an email to the CEO on May 18 (with no response), explaining the situation. We have made it clear that we do not want to put them into a financial crunch and we are willing to wait on payment for several months. LAC, however, has made it clear that they do not intend to return the deposit. We consider ourselves to be super easy going parents and have not once complained about little things but not responding or returning our deposit that was to be refunded feels really wrong and dishonest. And I strongly feel other parents should be warned about this experience, especially during a time when families, like ours are not in a position to be losing a few thousand dollars.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lily B.New York, NY02Feb 7, 2019
My son has been at LAC for 4 months now, and I have a strong desire to tell the world about how wonderful this place is. Early childcare can be such tiring work, but this team always makes it look like there's nothing else they'd rather be doing. At the beginning when my kid had a hard time with separation, LAC's director immediately devised a personalized plan to help him adjust. I am so grateful to all of his teachers for their patience, warmth, attention to detail, and good humor. They are heroes to my son and me. Thank you, LAC!

Our son is enrolled in LAC and I cannot say enough great things about the facility and staff. At only six months old they have him finger painting and learning his ABCs and colors. He is always excited to go and it is clear that the staff loves having him there. What a great addition to the neighborhood!

A truly wonderful environment for my nephew. Mrs. Emily and her staff have a created a comprehensive culture of learning and respect. I am so happy to see him learn and grow in such a positive learning community where they even practice such activities as yoga! Thanks for all the support in his growth!
