Tamales are authentic and tasty. Chicken taquitos are bomb. They also have several Puerto Rican dishes including Pasteles and arros con gandule (big portion).
Carne asada is very good and the burritos de lengua special is amazing.
On weekends they also have special birria tacos are some of the best in the state. The meat is tender with the right flavor profile you expect from a great birria, and the consommé for dipping is legit (and helps set their dish apart from other establishments)
Give them a try, but also be prepared to wait. Prepared fresh to order takes some time. 15-25 minutes depending on how busy they are. Portions are very large.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Gabrielle B.Maui, HI31555280Dec 27, 2022
I've passed this spot many times on my way to Foodland and for whatever reason, never made it a point to go inside, but I am SO glad I did. I tried some of their food at the 2022 Makawao Stampede and it was BOMB! This evening I noticed they were open and stopped in.
The dining area is fairly small and dimly lit, but I didn't care as I was taking my food to go anyway.
The menu has breakfast items (certain hours), local plates, Mexican cuisine, and a few additional sides. Most of all, I LOVE the fact that they use locally sourced Maui Cattle Company meat!
I wasn't too hungry so I ordered a side of Spanish rice which was a great portion (could likely feed 2 people) and a chicken tamale a la carte. The tamale was tender with good texture and good flavor on its own. The sauce added an extra punch that made it even better. The Spanish rice was pretty standard but satisfied my cravings!
Another customer who ordered a burrito commented "Woah! This is huge! It's the size of my head!" Definitely looking forward to trying other items from here soon!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 11, 2021
The son helps his mom daily in the front while his mom, the Chef cooks. The Pastele plate is BOMB!! Definitely worth your money of two very large Pastele, two large scoops gandule, Mac salad and tossed greens! This will make them famous. For real. Also ordered the Kalbi plate. Oh my goodness!! To our surprise, another huge portion plate lunch! In the plate, it must have had 6 pieces of Kalbi. And the taste is a good Teriyaki vibe. Mac salad was good too and with two scoops white rice.
The menu is very limited but, being limited is good for the Chef to really concentrate on her perfection of her tasty entrees. They support local and only use the Maui Cattle Company for their beef.
If course with Covid, you are only allowed to take out.
We will be back!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Brendon C.Makawao, HI39231103Jun 12, 2023

I wholly support small business and mom and pop shops, but for this place I unfortunately need to give it a thumbs down due to the food. We wanted to try out the mixed plates, so we ordered the kalbi plate, the loco moco, and the chopped steak plate....all bad choices.
Kalbi plate: the kalbi was tasteless and contained so much gristle. You can't chew on the food, you have to gnaw at it
Loco moco: the beef patties had a "secret " ingredient (and I don't mean that in a good way). It tasted like hamburger infused with cleaning powder.
Chopped steak: the meat was C grade meat, and again, tasteless and super chewy.
It's too bad that we threw away all the food after only a few bites. At $15 per plate + tax, I lost about 50 bucks on this place. Do yourself a favor a stay away.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jessie B.Santa Clara, CA21152Nov 13, 2021
I called ahead and asked if they had vegan options. They claimed they had vegan tamales and burritos. When we arrived and asked more about them, the guy was incredibly disparaging of veganism. The worst bit was when we went to order the burritos and tried to confirm again that they were vegan, only then he told us the wraps had lard in them.
It is fine when restaurants explicitly decide to not have vegan options. But I don't appreciate being lied to and told off about my lifestyle.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Debby G.Makawao, HI022Jul 29, 2020
BEST MEXICAN FOOD UPCOUNTRY and dare I say central Maui?
This is homemade Mexican that is loaded and fast. So if you want to delight your tastebuds come to Pukalani by the Foodland you won't be disappointed! Oh, and they have local cuisine, too!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Chris K.Hilo, HI0114Aug 11, 2022
This place is a hidden gem. One of the last affordable places to eat good local food on Maui. Ordered the chop steak big enough for 2. Portions are outright incredible. You leave knowing that your money was well spent and you supported a humble local business. Keep doing what you're doing!

Super good. Don't pass up this place without trying it. It's cash-only but it's worth it. Small, family owned and ran restaurant which serves local food and Mexican food. I wish they'd put up a nice sign outside which says they serve authentic local food and authentic Mexican food. The portions here are massive. The food is fresh and so good! Don't. Sleep. On. Mixed. Plate. Go here. You won't regret it. It's ono.

Why haven't I been here before, I'm so sad that I didn't try this place out sooner. Walk in and place your order and have a seat your order will be out shortly.
Jose he's running the cash register he's just awesome. I'm very glad that we gave this place a try. We'll be back to try other dishes.
Food: Hamburger Steak 3 patties, 2 scoops rice and mac salad with brown gravy whooo hooooo. So ono.
It comes on a Styrofoam plate so when your done throw it away in the trash.
If you're in the Pukalani area give this place a try. It's located in the Terrace Center.Helpful 14Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0
