LA Boxing has seen better days. I thought that after being bought up by UFC, they would spend some money fixing the gym. Not looking for anything fancy. After all this is a boxing gym not one of UFC's foo foo high tech facilities but then again there is got to be some minimum standards!
The carpet in the workout area is in dire need of replacement, it smells and is torn. Then there are the heavy bags, the mainstay of the gym, I don't know how many of the bags are barely hanging on by 1 or 2 straps. At any one time, one or the other speed bag is broken. Repairs takes forever. The speed bag was broken for months before it was replaced now the other one is gone. We will see how long it will take to replace. Something as simple as refilling the hand sanitizer took weeks and if you took a whiff of the carpet, you will know why the sanitizer is so critical. I don't even want to count how long the broken bag straps have been hanging there, some at least as long as when I started in April.
Why do I stay? The coaches are great and the members are cool!
Next time? If things don't change? Well, let's just say renewal of my membership is coming up...Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Sep 27, 2011
LivingSocial.com had a deal for one month membership of unlimited classes (Kickboxing, Boxing, MMA, and Muay Thai) for $49. I automatically jumped on the deal since it's not that far from where I live. I've always wanted to try a REAL kickboxing class instead of the aerobic kickboxing classes they have at 24 Hour Fitness.
One of the managers (his name escapes me at the moment) helped my friend and I out at the front desk. He was very friendly and explained the gym to us. He recommended buying a set of gloves and wraps but never pushed it on us. They do have used gloves available to borrow but why would you want to use old sweaty gloves?
Justin was the instructor for the first kickboxing class I took. He noticed that several of us were knew so he took time to show us some combinations. I was sweating like crazy! The class was such a great workout that I was on such a workout high after.
Two days after my first class I took another kickboxing class with Vance and he's even tougher than Mike. There's no such thing as slacking off what so ever! It was a 9:30AM class on a Friday and Vance was very energetic while keeping us pumped.
The gym over all is a decent size and in good shape. Classes are available from 6:30AM to 7:45PM on the weekdays. After my month is over I'm definitely going to pay for an extended membership. I recommend this place for anyone who's really serious about getting in shape.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - May 11, 2012
This is going to be an amazing summer. Why? Bc I'm going to be fierce, lean, and muscly. I have been listening to a friend rave about boxing this and boxing that for a while now, so I agreed that I'd go with the next time. Of course, I flaked. So the next next time I promised to go. I had to go when he said I probably couldnt' get through a workout. Oh yeah?
Well, it was a killer workout. I've done a lot of exercise in my time- weight training, pilates, crossfit, you name it. But this one had me winded after just the warm up. And then I had to hit something? It actually felt really good to beat that huge bag up. Trouble at work? Imagine your coworker's face. Pow. Trouble with friends? Pow pow. Boy trouble? Pow pow pow kick. Ok stop me before I tear this thing off the damn hinges. But it was a pretty fun workout. I was a newbie and had no idea which punch was which so the girl would come over and show me as she demonstrated the combinations.
And the verdict? After leaving here, I felt lean and very very sweaty. I was sore for 3 days after this workout. So I'm definitely going to return. Everyone was pretty cool and the other people in the class were really helpful in telling me to pace myself. Mental note: actually pace myself next time. Staff seemed pretty friendly and they didn't high pressure me like the huge public gyms (cough cough 24 Hr. Fitness I'm looking at you!) In fact, I had to call them afterwards and ask how much to be able to beat that bag up regularly? All in all, expect to see my muscly butt around here more often. And expect to see me rockin' a teeny tiny bikini this summer guilt free! Pow pow!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Jan 20, 2013Purchased a Yelp Deal
I really like this gym for a few reasons. I don't feel that someone is pushing for me to sign up with PTs or that I am getting hassled to renew my contract, etc. It's a really laid back, focused on working out type of gym.
The class schedule is okay, it could be better. I wish that the classes were more focused on losing weight and kickboxing rather than the "fight" aspect of it. The teachers are good but I don't know about welcoming. The music is okay but I wish that it was more to the beat of the work out. I feel that the conditions of the place need some improvement such as cleaning. The floor is nasty and really? When you think about it, everyone is sweating on it and dropping down to do sit ups or what not, I hope it's cleaned often. The bathrooms are just eh. For a girl, I'd like to wish that they were a bit cleaner for the people that need to change after work but before a work out.
I like this place but wish for more. It's a good gym for the things that it offers but I think it could give a bit more.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Steven H.Long Beach, CA32595Mar 8, 2012
I've just finished my first month here and I have nothing but great things to say about LA Boxing Torrance. I got my first class free to try them out. Then I received a breakdown of membership options, but no hard sales pitch, especially not compared to what you receive at a 24 Hour, LA Fitness, or Golds. I was offered to purchase gloves, but that whole pitch lasted about 8 seconds and it was never brought up again. And I do not have a contract. I am a month to month member.
If you are just starting out, start with the boxing classes and build some endurance while learning the proper ways to throw a punch. And if you need a couple of extra tips on the punches or kicks, show up early or stay a few minutes late and ASK one of the trainers for help. I've never seen them turn someone down. Dont know how to do your handwraps? Again, ask and one of the staff or even regular members are always willing to help.
And now to the classes.... if you've never trained before, get ready to work your butt off sweat more than you ever have. And you'll love it after! They have amazing trainers who will push you to do more than you were ever willing to do.
Socially, people also seem so much more outgoing here than what you encounter at a normal gym. I guess because everyone is going through the same grind together, it creates an empathetic connection or something. But "hello's" and conversation are so much more prevalent here.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Sharon T.Los Angeles, CA3866824Apr 4, 2011
I'm on my second 6 month membership and I LOVE IT!!! It's not your typical fitness gym and that's what I love about it. You actually put on real boxing gloves and punch actual punching bags. None of that dancey stuff they have at your traditional fitness center. While they are lacking in luxury items such as locker rooms & showers, they more than make up for it with the number of classes offered in addition to their well-trained instructors. They offer classes in boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai & MMA.
When I took my first few classes the instructors made it a point to approach me, an often shy quiet girl in unfamiliar surroundings, and showed me the basics and asked if I had any questions. They would also come around halfway thru the class to see how I did the combos and corrected me when necessary. If I had to choose one area where they could improve, it would be to offer a few more kids classes or at least offer them at a later time and/or on the weekend. I brought my son in to try the kids class and he wanted to sign up for a membership. Unfortunately, with the kids classes being offered only at 4:15, it wouldn't work out with our current schedule. Other than that, LA Boxing is AWESOME!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - John A.Carson, CA177219Feb 15, 2011First to Review
An investment I do not regret. They have a great facility and a very friendly and motivational staff. All trainers have experience in the ring and are well educated in their field. If you're tired of going to a conventional gym and want a challenge. Enroll for a free class. You can try each class once for free. I loved it so much I went ahead an signed up after my first class. They offer private training classes as well. You can pay dues monthly, bi-yearly, or yearly.

Pros:
- A great workout! You'll leave feeling like you actually did something good for your body.
- If possible, take advantage of the Yelp Deal for 10 workouts/classes for $99 - it's a great way to test the waters to see if you can hang or not.
Cons: The evening workout schedule kind of messed with my dinner schedule. Depending on your metabolism, you should eat at least an hour before classes - if not, you'll feel like you wanna blow chunks mid-class. No bueno.
I bought the Yelp Deal ($99 for 10 classes) and took the evening kick boxing classes with my BFF. We both agreed that we liked the classes, plus it gave us an activity to do together. I had taken boxing classes before so I already had wraps and gloves. My bestie had to buy those things. She ended up buying them at Big 5. Keep an eye out though, sometimes the gear at LA Boxing is on sale.
So we didn't quite make it through all 10 classes for my Yelp Deal - but that's not LA Boxing's fault. The trainers are very chill and supportive! They even check up on you and adjust your class routine if you have pre-existing conditions like my bad knees. My BFF tapped out on me after 3 classes in. She broke out in hives and never wanted to come back. Again, no fault of LA Boxing! I started playing rec. soccer, so I chose to do that instead of kick boxing.
A membership to this gym can be pricey, but if you're tired of the same od routine at your local gym, I HIGHLY recommend that you give these guys a try!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kyra C.Los Angeles, CA4038Jul 22, 2011
I took advantage of the free first class offer. Let me start off by saying this is not for the faint of heart! I took a Wednsday morning class with instructor Mike. It is definately the hardest thing I have done to date!
It incorporates boxing and strength & toning excercising. Trust me you will get the workout of your life, but it really is not for PUNKS!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - David A.San Pedro, CA2113111Aug 4, 2011
This is MY GYM!!!! Been coming here for 2 years now and I dont regret a single second of it. This isn't your typical workout so don't expect to jus slide by when getting your work out in. Its pure intense cardio that gets the job done. The trainers are there to push you but it's up to you to put the effort in. Its a gym, people sweat so don't expect it to smell like roses, but it is a pretty clean gym. They offer boxing/kickboxing cardio classes through out the day, Muay Thai if you really want to learn how kick someone and MMA classes which focuses on Jiu-jitsu and wrestling skills to get that ground and pound working. When you take your first class you probably wont be able to walk for a couple days so be prepared :-)
